Y ou might think Ian Gillan, at 75 years old, would be fed up with singing Smoke on the Water. It was even a slightly ill-fitting encore during his brief spell fronting Black Sabbath in the early 80s. He recalls the plight of Luciano Pavarotti, with whom he sang a couple of times, and who one day expressed his jealousy of Gillan getting to sing Smoke on the Water. We have to mimic our original interpretation. Which is unfortunate, because almost everyone who knows his work would describe Gillan as a hard-rock singer. Not least because he continues to front Deep Purple, who have just released Whoosh! A few years here, then on to something else. But we do pass messages, and the atmosphere is quite good. I was swatting at the air to wave away the smoke. It was pure Spinal Tap, a moment of panic. Then there was the Stonehenge stage set itself. Either the specifications had been in metres when they should have been in feet, or it was built at actual size. Either way, it was too big for many of the venues Sabbath were meant to play. The crowd reaction at that opening show was not the awe Sabbath had been hoping for. It was unbelievable. His autobiography suggests he spent a great deal of time either drinking or in search of drink, but he was a social drinker who drank to get drunk, rather than someone who needed a bottle next to him at all times, he says. And these days, his post-show routine is rather more sedate than it used to be. Now I carry a kettle, a little mobile kettle, and I come back and have a cup of tea. Still, at one point he was drinking enough to get hepatitis on a US tour inI note. I got hepatitis, but I got it from a Coke bottle. In those days there was no security. Anyone from the public could be wandering around backstage, and hepatitis was raging in New York at the time. Deep Purple were unusually unlucky in this regard: Blackmore caught it on a US tour as well. For all the rows, though, and the hepatitis, joining Deep Purple — at the same time as Episode Six bassist Roger Glover — Ian Gillan: The Autobiography of Deep Purples Singer the best thing that ever happened to him. This Ian Gillan: The Autobiography of Deep Purples Singer it. Still Deep Purple keep marching on. Steve Morse, who replaced Blackmore inhas now been their guitarist longer than Blackmore ever was. Don Airey took over from Jon Lord who died in as keyboard player in Gillan, Glover and Ian Paice remain from that classic lineup. How does Gillan cope with it Ian Gillan: The Autobiography of Deep Purples Singer — how does he still summon the screaming god of rock when he takes to the stage? Facebook Twitter Pinterest. Heavy Metal fans usually trace the roots of the genre to Black Sabbath, and, it's true that their powerful heavy sound, coupled with gloom and dark atmosphere, would be a major foundation stone to the music. Yet, personally, I would trace it back to Deep Purple. I remember when I first listened to their album 'In Rock' : the shattering violence and fast- paced tempo, the crazy guitar solos, the frantic bass, intoxicating drumming, surprising keyboards, and, above all, Ian Gillan's voice. No, wait! The guy has been a major influence on many singers, not least Bruce Dickinson yes, one of my favourite singer ever from my favourite band ever: Iron Maiden. But damn! Who never had the chills listening to him? Try and listen to 'Child in Time' without putting it on repeat In fact, it's simple, Deep Purple's original line-up is among those rare bands with whom I can't listen to even one song, just one, without going through their whole discography! It's that type of sound and passion. Well, good news, because I finally put my hands on Ian Gillan's autobiography Prior to read this, I had no idea of Gillan's personality. I had seen him Ian Gillan: The Autobiography of Deep Purples Singer various interviews. He Ian Gillan: The Autobiography of Deep Purples Singer quite laid back, although I was also aware of the love-hate, kind of toxic relationship, he had with Ritchie Blackmore. So, how has that read gone down then? For starter, it was nice to follow his career. Before Deep Purple, he had solid formative years with Episode Six a band I confess not knowing and, already big pal with Roger Glover, Ian Gillan: The Autobiography of Deep Purples Singer see him emerging as a strong original persona or Ian Gillan: The Autobiography of Deep Purples Singer I assume, since Episode Six were touring the Middle East circuit -Lebanon- instead of England, apparently a market clearly not up for them! The story then quickly goes straight down to business, when it all falls into place when him and Glover would combine their talent with Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Paice, and Jon Lord to form THE band. It's a nice story, but then there's not much he says which won't already be known by the fans -how 'In Rock' came to be, the disagreement in tastes regarding 'Fireball'the incertitude about 'Concerto for Group and Orchestra'his sad and bitter departure following 'Made In Japan' In fact, 'bitter' may be a key word here, or at least explain why it's such a light read. Indeed, the relationship between him and his guitarist was everything but great. He assures us, though, that he holds no grudge, and, indeed, he is never shy lavishing praise upon Ritchie Blackmore's skills with Ian Gillan: The Autobiography of Deep Purples Singer fret although, getting to understand his personality is another matter altogether! The said guitarist's behaviour as described here doesn't favour him The thing is, such approach might be Ian Gillan: The Autobiography of Deep Purples Singer noble endeavour after so many years, but it doesn't offer much insights from one of the key members of a band that had, basically, screwed itself up over egos. In fact, he's still hurt: I've never been allowed to forget the time I said, 'I'd rather slit my throat than sing with that band again'. But, then, I've also been asked many times, about my feelings towards their singers since my departure Well, the guy clearly has his own idiosyncrasies. On the one hand, he truly is a music lover and it was humbling to see him hopping from bands to bands with no care for their level of success or popularity, he who would play stadiums or lesser venues depending on where his career would take him. Ian Gillan is a rare breed, in that he cares about singing only for projects he is genuine about he refused to sing in Rainbow You would think, then, that he doesn't really care about fame and money? Well, about money, think again On the other hand indeed, I have never seen someone so concerned about money. I mean, alright, from a Londonian working class background and musician whose career was quite a seesaw, he can be excused to seek financial comfort. But Ian Gillan takes it all to another level! In fact, he has no qualm quoting his salaries, talk candidly about his tax avoidance, exposes his business failures, and, there are actually more pages in here about his accountant than, Ian Gillan: The Autobiography of Deep Purples Singer, major figures of the music industry he luckily worked with e.

  • Discography of the Mainstream Label
Discography of the Mainstream Label Mainstream was founded in 1964 by Bob Shad, and in its early history reissued material from Commodore Records and Time Records in addition to some new jazz material. The label released Big Brother & the Holding Company's first material in 1967, as well as The Amboy Dukes' first albums, whose guitarist, Ted Nugent, would become a successful solo artist in the 1970s. Shad died in 1985, and his daughter, Tamara Shad, licensed its back catalogue for reissues. In 1991 it was resurrected in order to reissue much of its holdings on compact disc, and in 1993, it was purchased by Sony subsidiary Legacy Records. 56000/6000 Series 56000 mono, S 6000 stereo - The Commodore Recordings 1939, 1944 - Billy Holiday [1964] Strange Fruit/She’s Funny That Way/Fine and Mellow/Embraceable You/I’ll Get By//Lover Come Back to Me/I Cover the Waterfront/Yesterdays/I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues/I’ll Be Seeing You 56001 mono, S 6001 stereo - Begin the Beguine - Eddie Heywood [1964] Begin the Beguine/Downtown Cafe Boogie/I Can't Believe That You're in Love with Me/Carry Me Back to Old Virginny/Uptown Cafe Boogie/Love Me Or Leave Me/Lover Man/Save Your Sorrow 56002 mono, S 6002 stereo - Influence of Five - Hawkins, Young & Others [1964] Smack/My Ideal/Indiana/These Foolish Things/Memories Of You/I Got Rhythm/Way Down Yonder In New Orleans/Stardust/Sittin' In/Just A Riff 56003 mono, S 6003 stereo - Dixieland-New Orleans - Teagarden, Davison & Others [1964] That’s A- Plenty/Panama/Ugly Chile/Riverboat Shuffle/Royal Garden Blues/Clarinet

  • An Exclusive Interview with Deep Purple's Don Airey's Wife
Don playing his keyboard on stage. An exclusive interview with Deep Purple’s Don Airey’s wife Written by Jack and Ben Comberton Features An exclusive interview with Doris Airey, the wife of famous Don Airey: the former musician with Deep Purple and Ozzy Osborne. Deep Purple last performed live in 2013 and Don has been playing keyboard with them since he joined in 2002. His wife, Doris Airey, was kind enough to answer a few questions about life being married to a famous rock star. Doris’ side of the family came from Rhodesia and she met Don at a nightclub when she came over for a year as a research nurse. She “never went back home.” When she met Don he was already into music. He started out as a classical musician, until he broke his arm, which forced him to change his genre of music to rock. However, you will still find him playing classical when he can. When our interviewer asked Doris: “What career would you have liked Don to have?” She replied: “I can’t imagine Don being anything other than a musician. There were times, especially when the children were small, when a 9am to 5pm job would have been nice because I was parenting on my own and none of my family were over here.” Don’s inflated ego didn’t effect Doris in pursuing her own career, because she was determined to be different from a typical famous musician’s wife, who was showered in money and gifts. There were times when her career provided extra stability because she didn’t want to live a “fantasy lifestyle.” Doris’ predominant job was working at Bourn Hall in Cambridgeshire.

  • Jon Lord June 9 1941 – July 16 2012
Jon Lord June 9 1941 – July 16 2012 Founder member of Deep Purple, Jon Lord was born in Leicester. He began playing piano aged 6, studying classical music until leaving school at 17 to become a Solicitor’s clerk. Initially leaning towards the theatre, Jon moved to London in 1960 and trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama, winning a scholarship, and paying for food and lodgings by performing in pubs. In 1963 he broke away from the school with a group of teachers and other students to form the pioneering London Drama Centre. A year later, Jon “found himself“ in an R and B band called The Artwoods (fronted by Ronnie Wood’s brother, Art) where he remained until the summer of 1967. During this period, Jon became a much sought after session musician recording with the likes of Elton John, John Mayall, David Bowie, Jeff Beck and The Kinks (eg 'You Really Got Me'). In December 1967, Jon met guitarist Richie Blackmore and by early 1968 the pair had formed Deep Purple. The band would pioneer hard rock and go on to sell more than 100 million albums, play live to more than 10 million people, and were recognized in 1972 by The Guinness Book of World Records as “the loudest group in the world”. Deep Purple’s debut LP “Shades of Deep Purple” (1968) generated the American Top 5 smash hit “Hush”. In 1969, singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover joined and the band’s sound became heaver and more aggressive on “Deep Purple in Rock” (1970), where Jon developed a groundbreaking new way of amplifying the sound of the Hammond organ to match the distinctive sound of the electric guitar.

  • THE JOHN BYRNE BAND the John Byrne Band Is Led by Dublin Native and Philadelphia-Based John Byrne
THE JOHN BYRNE BAND The John Byrne Band is led by Dublin native and Philadelphia-based John Byrne. Their debut album, After the Wake, was released to critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic in 2011. With influences ranging from Tom Waits to Planxty, John’s songwriting honors and expands upon the musical and lyrical traditions of his native and adopted homes. John and the band followed up After the Wake in early 2013 with an album of Celtic and American traditional tunes. The album, Celtic/Folk, pushed the band on to the FolkDJ Charts, reaching number 36 in May 2015. Their third release, another collection of John Byrne originals, entitled “The Immigrant and the Orphan”, was released in Sept 2015. The album, once again, draws heavily on John’s love of Americana and Celtic Folk music and with the support of DJs around the country entered the FolkDJ Charts at number 40. Critics have called it “..a powerful, deeply moving work that will stay with you long after you have heard it” (Michael Tearson-Sing Out); “The Vibe of it (The Immigrant and the Orphan) is, at once, as rough as rock and as elegant as a calm ocean..each song on this album carries an honesty, integrity and quiet passion that will draw you into its world for years to come” (Terry Roland – No Depression); “If any element of Celtic, Americana or Indie-Folk is your thing, then this album is an absolute yes” (Beehive Candy); “It’s a gorgeous, nostalgic record filled with themes of loss, hope, history and lost loves; everything that tugs at your soul and spills your blood and guts…The Immigrant and the Orphan scorches the earth and emerges tough as nails” (Jane Roser – That Music Mag) The album was released to a sold-out crowd at the storied World Café Live in Philadelphia and 2 weeks later to a sold-out crowd at the Mercantile in Dublin, Ireland.

  • Psaudio Copper
Issue 133 MARCH 29TH, 2021 Copper has a new look! So does the rest of the PS Audio website, the result of countless hours of hard work. There's more functionality and easier access to articles, and additional developments will come. There will be some temporary glitches and some tweaks required – like high-end audio systems, magazines sometimes need tweaking too – but overall, we're excited to provide a better and more enjoyable reading experience. I now hand over the column to our esteemed Larry Schenbeck: Dear Copper Colleagues and Readers, Frank has graciously asked if I’d like to share a word or two about my intention to stop writing Too Much Tchaikovsky. So: thanks to everyone who read and enjoyed it – I wrote it for you. If you added comments occasionally, you made my day. I also wrote the column so I could keep learning, especially about emerging creatives and performers in classical music. Getting the chance to stumble upon something new and nourishing had sustained me in the academic world – it certainly wasn’t the money! – and I was grateful to continue that in Copper. So why stop? Because, as they say, there is a season. It has become considerably harder for me to stumble upon truly fresh sounds and then write freshly thereon. Here I am tempted to quote Douglas Adams or Satchel Paige, who both knew how to deliver an exit line. But I’ll just say (since Frank has promised to leave the light on), goodbye for now. The door is open, Larry, and we can’t thank you enough for your wonderful contributions.

Roger Glover Urodzony w Walii muzyk, kompozytor i producent. Basista zespołu Deep Purple. Karierę muzyczną rozpoczął na początku lat 60. jako członek zespołów z The Madisons i The Lightnings, z których połączenia w 1963 r. powstała grupa Episode Six. To wtedy rozpoczęła się trwająca do dzisiaj współpraca Glovera z Ianem Gillanem. W 1969 r. artyści opuścili zespół, żeby dołączyć do nowego składu Deep Purple. Po czterech latach grania z legendarną grupą Glover odszedł z formacji. Wystąpił gościnnie na płytach wielu wykonawców. W latach 70. był producentem płyt m.in. grup Nazareth i Judas Priest. Wspierał także powrót do działalności muzycznej Iana Gillana, produkując pierwszy album jego grupy „Child In Time” z 1976 r. Rok później, w studiu Musicland w Monachium, Glover zarejestrował materiał na swoją drugą solową płytę – „Elements”, w większości instrumentalną suitę o pięciu ziemskich żywiołach. Pod koniec 1978 r. Glover przyjął propozycję Ritchie’go Blackmore'a i dołączył do grupy Rainbow. Do współpracy Roger zaprosił m.in.
