An exclusive interview with Deep Purple’s Don Airey’s wife Written by Jack and Ben Comberton Features An exclusive interview with Doris Airey, the wife of famous Don Airey: the former musician with Deep Purple and Ozzy Osborne. Deep Purple last performed live in 2013 and Don has been playing keyboard with them since he joined in 2002. His wife, Doris Airey, was kind enough to answer a few questions about life being married to a famous rock star. Doris’ side of the family came from Rhodesia and she met Don at a nightclub when she came over for a year as a research nurse. She “never went back home.” When she met Don he was already into music. He started out as a classical musician, until he broke his arm, which forced him to change his genre of music to rock. However, you will still find him playing classical when he can. When our interviewer asked Doris: “What career would you have liked Don to have?” She replied: “I can’t imagine Don being anything other than a musician. There were times, especially when the children were small, when a 9am to 5pm job would have been nice because I was parenting on my own and none of my family were over here.” Don’s inflated ego didn’t effect Doris in pursuing her own career, because she was determined to be different from a typical famous musician’s wife, who was showered in money and gifts. There were times when her career provided extra stability because she didn’t want to live a “fantasy lifestyle.” Doris’ predominant job was working at Bourn Hall in Cambridgeshire. She said that working there was very rewarding, “200%”. She enjoyed the job to a great extent, although there was some sadness within it - IVF success rates are not high and to see the disappointment in people’s eyes really hurt her. However, she did say that “it was wonderful to bring such joy and to see such wanted and precious children come into the world.” .

I also wrote the column so I could keep learning, especially about emerging creatives and performers in classical music. Getting the chance to stumble upon something new and nourishing had sustained me in the academic world – it certainly wasn’t the money! – and I was grateful to continue that in Copper. So why stop? Because, as they say, there is a season. It has become considerably harder for me to stumble upon truly fresh sounds and then write freshly thereon. Here I am tempted to quote Douglas Adams or Satchel Paige, who both knew how to deliver an exit line. But I’ll just say (since Frank has promised to leave the light on), goodbye for now. It was even a slightly ill-fitting encore during his brief spell fronting Black Sabbath in the early 80s. He recalls the plight of Luciano Pavarotti, with whom he sang a couple of times, and who one day expressed his jealousy of Gillan getting to sing Smoke on the Water. We have to mimic our original interpretation. Which is unfortunate, because almost everyone who knows his work would describe Gillan as a hard-rock singer. Not least because he continues to front Deep Purple, who have just released Whoosh! A few years here, then on to something else. But we do pass messages, and the atmosphere is quite good. I was swatting at the air to wave away the smoke. It was pure Spinal Tap, a moment of panic. Then there was the Stonehenge stage set itself. Either the specifications had been in metres when they should have been in feet, or it was built at actual size. Either way, it was too big for many of the venues Sabbath were meant to play. The crowd reaction at that opening show was not the awe Sabbath had been hoping for. It was unbelievable. His autobiography suggests he spent a great deal of time either drinking or in search of drink, but he was a social drinker who drank to get drunk, rather than someone who needed a bottle next to him at all times, he says.

Deep Purple – Now What! Deep Purple have never really been a favourite band of mine if I’m honest. I used to find their music ok when I was younger but the Concerto for Rock Band and Orchestra has always held my attention; not because it’s a great piece of music, but to me, it was a really interesting experiment trying to gel two completely different genres together. In fact, opposites really. First of all, the problem of ‘dynamic’ differences is quite large but also the massive differences in attitude, style and basic sound. They just don’t fit together that well if each needs to retain its identity. Too often, an orchestra ends up playing a pseudo intelligent backing for a band in order to give it more ‘respect’ or the band tries to play in a ‘classical’ kind of way which really stilts them. The two don’t sit together well in my opinion. Deep Purple’s concerto retains each genres’ identities and even makes use of the massive contrasts available. Jon Lord’s last recording of it merges the two well although the original big ‘rock’ feel is somewhat compromised and the piece has been mixed into a more palatable mix with compromises made from both sides in order to get it to hold together perhaps better as a composition. Real old Deep Purple never really did it for me. ‘Child in Time’ was good but once heard, I found that I didn’t particularly want to revisit it. Same for a lot of their other stuff for me.

Negli anni sessanta militò in vari gruppi, fino a quando divenne membro dei Finders Keepers, formazione nei quali troviamo anche Dave Holland e Mel Galley, e pubblicò con loro un singolo nel 1968. Nel 1969 pubblicò il singolo Send me no more letters con i Trapeze, formati da Hughes, Holland, Galley, il tastierista Terry Rowley ed il cantante John Jones. Seguì nel 1970 un album omonimo influenzato da sonorità beat, seppur non ascrivibile a tale genere.
