Strange Kind of Woman Hush Speed King The first known Purple tribute was recorded as early as 1972. An unknown, starving band named Thin Lizzy (which consisted of Bell, Downey & Lynott) were offered a lump sum of money to record some Deep Purple songs. (The album contains also a few non-DP tracks.) They did - with the help from two Irish guys. The album came out in early 1973. It wasn't a success. In February, Thin Lizzy had a top ten hit with a single of their own. Read more about it here. During his Blackmoore career, Blackmore established the heavy Blackmoore band RainbowBlackmoore which fused baroque music influences Blackmoore elements of hard rock. The family moved to HestonMiddlesexwhen Blackmore was two. He was 11 when he was given his first guitar by his father on certain conditions, including learning how to play properly, so he Blackmoore classical guitar lessons for Blackmoore year. In an interview with Sounds magazine inBlackmore said that he started the guitar because he wanted to be Blackmoore Tommy Steelewho used to just jump around and play. Blackmore loathed school and hated his teachers. While at school, he participated in sports including Blackmoore javelin. Blackmore left school at age 15 and started work as an apprentice radio mechanic at nearby Heathrow Airport. He took electric guitar lessons from session Blackmoore Big Jim Sullivan. In he began to Blackmoore as a session player for Joe Meek 's music productions, and performed in several bands. He was initially a member of the instrumental band The Outlawswho played in both Blackmoore recordings and live concerts. Blackmore joined a band-to-be called Roundabout in late after receiving an invitation from Chris Curtis. Curtis originated the concept of the band, but would be forced out before the band fully formed. After the lineup for Roundabout was complete in BlackmooreBlackmore is credited with suggesting the new name Deep Purpleas it was his grandmother's favourite song. -

Malmsteen Yngwie Johann Malmsteen (born Lars Johann Yngve Lannerbäck, June 30, 1963) is a Swedish guitarist, composer and bandleader. Widely recognized as a virtuoso, Malmsteen achieved widespread acclaim in the 1980s due to his technical proficiency and his pioneering neo-classical metal. Guitar One magazine rated him the third fastest guitar shredder in the world after Michael Angelo Batio and Chris Impellitteri. Born into a musical family in Stockholm, Yngwie was the youngest child in the family. At an early age, he showed little interest in music. It wasn't until September 18, 1970 when at age seven he saw a TV special on the death of Jimi Hendrix that Malmsteen became obsessed with the guitar. To quote his official website, "The day Jimi Hendrix died, the guitar-playing Yngwie was born". He claims his first name in Swedish means "young Viking chief". Sea of Tranquility - Gillan, Ian, Band: Live at the Rainbow 1977 (DVD) Page 1 of 2 Gillan, Ian, Band: Live at the Rainbow 1977 (DVD) The Ian Gillan DVD's keep coming, this one being a 34 minute concert clip from a 1977 appearance at the Rainbow, featuring the Ian Gillan Band. These days many people tend to forget this early band of Gillan's, most remember the harder rocking Gillan that toured extensively and released a handful of powerful albums in the late 70's and early 80's. The IGB were more of a mix of jazz fusion and rock, as opposed to the heavy rock sounds of Gillan, clearly heard on this five song set featuring guitarist Ray Fenwick, keyboard player Colin Towns, bassist John Gustafson, and drummer Mark Nauseef. It's a shame that not more of the band's original material is presented here, as they had a unique sound which paired stunning jazzy arrangements with Gillan's vocal shrieks, which can be heard in full force on "Clear Air Turbulence" and "Money Lender". However, this fusion based sound does not work well at all on Deep Purple classics like "Child In Time", "Smoke on the Water" , and "Woman From Tokyo", especially with Fenwick, who is a fine guitar player in his own right but not very adept at playing songs with heavy riffs. It would have been nice to see and hear him on some other IGB original material rather than the Purple songs, but perhaps this was the only footage that survived from this show. -

An exclusive interview with Deep Purple’s Don Airey’s wife Written by Jack and Ben Comberton Features An exclusive interview with Doris Airey, the wife of famous Don Airey: the former musician with Deep Purple and Ozzy Osborne. Deep Purple last performed live in 2013 and Don has been playing keyboard with them since he joined in 2002. His wife, Doris Airey, was kind enough to answer a few questions about life being married to a famous rock star. Doris’ side of the family came from Rhodesia and she met Don at a nightclub when she came over for a year as a research nurse. She “never went back home.” When she met Don he was already into music. He started out as a classical musician, until he broke his arm, which forced him to change his genre of music to rock. However, you will still find him playing classical when he can. When our interviewer asked Doris: “What career would you have liked Don to have?” She replied: “I can’t imagine Don being anything other than a musician. There were times, especially when the children were small, when a 9am to 5pm job would have been nice because I was parenting on my own and none of my family were over here.” Don’s inflated ego didn’t effect Doris in pursuing her own career, because she was determined to be different from a typical famous musician’s wife, who was showered in money and gifts. There were times when her career provided extra stability because she didn’t want to live a “fantasy lifestyle.” Doris’ predominant job was working at Bourn Hall in Cambridgeshire. -

Ian Gillan lasciò i Deep Purple nel 1973 proprio dopo la pubblicazione dell'acclamato album “Who Do We Think We Are?”, a causa di forti contrasti interni con il chitarrista Ritchie Blackmore. Il grande cantante urlatore formò una band tutta sua e quindi dopo tre anni pubblicò, nel 1976, il suo primo disco solista con essa. Quell'album adesso introvabile era “Child In Time” e contiene una splendida cover della famosa canzone dei Purple, meno hard rock, meno nervosa e drammatica, con un'inclinazione più sognante e malinconica eseguita con molti sapori progressivi. Esso segnò l'ascesa della prima formazione della Ian Gillan Band, rimarcata ancora nel 1977 dalla pubblicazione degli ottimi “Clear Air Turbulence” e “Scarabus”, entrambi nello stesso anno ed entrambi con un particolare mood jazzato, un groove alieno a ciò che Gillan ci aveva abituati nella sua band porpora, e con straordinarie parti sperimentali sottolineate da interventi di flauto e sax. Tutto ciò, appunto, era abbastanza fuori dalla norma per un cantante che proveniva direttamente dall'hard rock milieu, ma Gillan desiderava fortemente cambiare aria dal ruvido sound purpleiano così approdò all'esplorazione di spiagge quasi progressive. Poi nel 1978 cambiò di nuovo tutto facendo retromarcia e tornando verso i sicuri e redditizi lidi dell'hard rock inglese, cavalcando con arguzia ed esperienza il crescente successo della New Wave of British Metal costituita da Judas Priest, Saxon e Iron Maiden su tutti. -
