MISSILESMISSILESDr Carlo Kopp in the Asia-Pacific oday, offensive missiles are the primary armament of fighter aircraft, with missile types spanning a wide range of specialised niches in range, speed, guidance technique and intended target. With the Pacific Rim and Indian Ocean regions today the fastest growing area globally in buys of evolved third generation combat aircraft, it is inevitable that this will be reflected in the largest and most diverse inventory of weapons in service. At present the established inventories of weapons are in transition, with a wide variety of Tlegacy types in service, largely acquired during the latter Cold War era, and new technology 4th generation missiles are being widely acquired to supplement or replace existing weapons. The two largest players remain the United States and Russia, although indigenous Israeli, French, German, British and Chinese weapons are well established in specific niches. Air to air missiles, while demanding technologically, are nevertheless affordable to develop and fund from a single national defence budget, and they result in greater diversity than seen previously in larger weapons, or combat aircraft designs. Air-to-air missile types are recognised in three distinct categories: highly agile Within Visual Range (WVR) missiles; less agile but longer ranging Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missiles; and very long range BVR missiles. While the divisions between the latter two categories are less distinct compared against WVR missiles, the longer ranging weapons are often quite unique and usually much larger, to accommodate the required propellant mass. In technological terms, several important developments have been observed over the last decade. -

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow body of water that separates the Persian Gulf from the Gulf of Oman, through which 20% of the world’s oil passes annually. The UAE, seven emirates that work under a federalist structure, also is an important hydrocarbon producer in its own right with the world’s seventh largest known oil reserves and the eleventh largest known natural gas fields. The UAE allows both the U.S. and France to operate military bases in the country from where the two countries support their military activities in Afghanistan and elsewhere in the Middle East. In order of size, the emirates are: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Umm al Qaywayn, Ajman, Al Fajayrah, and Ras al Khaymah. Ras al Khaymah joined the UAE in February 1972 after the other six states agreed on a federal constitution the year before. The UAE, with its capital in Abu Dhabi, is a federation with specified powers delegated to the central government and all other powers reserved to the emirates. LAND ROVERS THAT FIRE MISSILES Clive Elliott describes how the humble Land Rover can have the audacity to destroy tanks and even aircraft! The Land Rover represents a very cost-effective military vehicle and its appeal lies in the ability to be modified into a wide range of roles. This can be as a delivery vehicle for troops and equipment or as a platform for installations such as radios and weapons. These installations range from the weaponry just being bolted down to a more thoughtful design for a fighting machine. In the early stages of weapon development it is more likely to take the form of an improvisation that can be used to demonstrate a weapons system. Many of the missile systems fitted to Land Rovers were really adaptations of man-portable weapons, most of what follows is about British weapons including some information that has not been published before. Although this is meant to be about Land Rovers, it is as much about the story of British guided weapons. HESH & HEAT Warheads HESH (High Explosive Squash Head) warheads work by the warhead squashing into a “cow pat” and on detonation the shock wave blows large scabs of metal from the tank itself to cause devastation within. HEAT (High Explosive Anti-Tank) warheads produce a jet of liquid copper, which burns a narrow hole through the armour to cause a pressure wave inside the tank that can kill the crew and detonate explosives. Alternative and more descriptive titles are “shaped” or “hollow charge” warheads, the hollow part refers to the conically shaped copper lined cavity in the warhead that is surrounded by the explosive. -

Nuclear Illusion, Nuclear Reality Nuclear Weapons and International Security since 1945 Series Editor: Professor John Simpson, Mountbatten Centre for International Studies, University of Southampton, UK During the second half of the last century, the practical aspects of national nuclear weapon policies remained shrouded in state secrecy laws. This was an area where political and technical issues were intertwined, and understanding required knowledge and expertise of both. Archival material was sparse and most writings on the subject were based on information provided to well-placed journalists and confidential interviews with some of those involved. The result was that for the academic analyst, separating truth from fiction was a very difficult task, especially in the case of the United Kingdom. With the end of the Cold War, archival material became available from all of the five declared nuclear-weapon states on their activities and scholars were able to discuss the previous century’s nuclear reality. A small community of scholars and former practitioners in the UK therefore started to rethink this history by producing a new series of volumes on the evolution of the United Kingdom’s nuclear weapon policies from 1952 onwards, the date of the explosion of its first nuclear device. Thanks to a grant from the UK Arts and Humanities Research Board to the Mountbatten Centre for International Studies at the University of Southampton, Professor John Simpson and his colleagues were able to start a systematic study of the post-1952 period, and to engage with those directly involved in its many aspects. What soon became clear was that in the period 1958–64 the course was set for UK nuclear policy in the next half-century. -
