  • I Think We Should Have a Group Discussion About It
Nyckelord Eurovision Song Contest, Sverige, svenskhet, föreställd gemenskap, lekfull nationalism. • For the Homeland: Transnational Diasporic Nationalism and the Eurovision Song Contest
FOR THE HOMELAND: TRANSNATIONAL DIASPORIC NATIONALISM AND THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST SLAVIŠA MIJATOVIĆ A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN GEOGRAPHY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, CANADA December 2014 © Slaviša Mijatović, 2014 Abstract This project examines the extent to which the Eurovision Song Contest can effectively perpetuate discourses of national identity and belonging for diasporic communities. This is done through a detailed performance analysis of former Yugoslav countries’ participations in the contest, along with in-depth interviews with diasporic people from the former Yugoslavia in Malmö, Sweden. The analysis of national symbolism in the performances shows how national representations can be useful for the promotion of the state in a reputational sense, while engaging a short-term sense of national pride and nationalism for the audiences. More importantly, the interviews with the former Yugoslav diaspora affirm Eurovision’s capacity for the long-term promotion of the ‘idea of Europe’ and European diversities as an asset, in spite of the history of conflict within the Yugoslav communities. This makes the contest especially relevant in a time of rising right-wing ideologies based on nationalism, xenophobia and racism. Key words: diaspora, former Yugoslavia, Eurovision Song Contest, music, nationalism, Sweden, transnationalism ii Acknowledgements Any project is fundamentally a piece of team work and my project has been no different. I would like to thank a number of people and organisations for their faith in me and the support they have given me: William Jenkins, my supervisor. For his guidance and support over the past two years, and pushing me to follow my desired research and never settling for less.

  • Danmark Favorit Att Vinna Eurovision Song Contest
Just nu spelas Danmarks bidrag ”Only Teardrops” till låga 3,50 gånger pengarna.

  • Interrogating the Shaping of Sexual Identities Through the Digital Fan Spaces of the Eurovision Song Contest
‘Party for everybody’? Interrogating the shaping of sexual identities through the digital fan spaces of the Eurovision Song Contest J HALLIWELL PhD 2021 ‘Party for everybody’? Interrogating the shaping of sexual identities through the digital fan spaces of the Eurovision Song Contest JAMIE HALLIWELL A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Manchester Metropolitan University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Science and Engineering Manchester Metropolitan University 2021 ABSTRACT This research critically examines Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) fandom to explore how sexuality is shaped within digital fan spaces. Transformations in social media technologies have revolutionised ESC fan practices and what it means to be an ESC fan. I make a case for ESC fandom as a sprawling context through which its digital practices intersect with the performance of sexuality. This research uses a mixed- method approach, that involves experimenting with social media platforms as tools for conducting qualitative research. This includes developing and applying WhatsApp ‘group chats’ with ESC fans and an auto-netnography of my personal Twitter network of ESC fans. I contribute to the geographies of social media, fandom and sexuality in the following ways: I provide the first comprehensive analysis of the digital ecosystem of ESC fandom by mapping the online and offline fan spaces where ESC fandom is practiced. I argue that ESC fan spaces are fluid and dynamic and ESC fans travel between them. I then explore two social media platforms, Facebook and Twitter, to understand how ESC fans express, make visible, and negotiate their fan and sexual identities within and across these digital fan spaces.

  • “Euphoria” Or “Only Teardrops”? Eurovision Song Contest Performance, Life Satisfaction and Suicide Filippos T
Filippidis and Laverty BMC Public Health (2018) 18:582 https://doi.org/10.1186/s12889-018-5497-3 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access “Euphoria” or “Only Teardrops”? Eurovision Song Contest performance, life satisfaction and suicide Filippos T. Filippidis1,2* and Anthony A. Laverty1,2 Abstract Background: The popularity of the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in Europe has been high for decades. We aimed to assess whether a country’s performance in the ESC is associated with life satisfaction and suicide mortality in European countries. Methods: We analysed nationally representative Eurobarometer survey data on life satisfaction from 33 European countries (N = 162,773) and country-level standardised suicide mortality data for years 2009 to 2015. The associations of winning the Contest, performing terribly, and higher final ranking with life satisfaction and suicide rates were all assessed. Results: Winning the ESC was not statistically significantly associated with increased life satisfaction or suicide rates, although every ten-place increase in final ranking was associated with an increase in life satisfaction (adjusted odds ratios [aOR] 1.04; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.02 to 1.05) and a decrease in suicide mortality rates (β = − 0.30; 95% CI: -0.59 to − 0.01). Terrible performance was associated with greater life satisfaction compared to not competing at all (aOR 1.13; 95%CI: 1.07 to 1.20). Conclusion: The good news for participating countries is that just competing at the ESC is associated with higher life satisfaction among the population. As improved performance is linked to Ooh Aah Just a Little Bit of improved life satisfaction, further research into how such international competitions may impact public health is needed.
