Lake Albert is facing multiple environmental changes, including declining fish species diversity, hyper-eutrophication, hypoxia, and reduced fish catches. To examine the role of Nile perch and Nile tilapia in the food web in their native Lake Albert, we estimated their diets using stable nitrogen and carbon isotopes. In Lake Albert, the tilapiine congeners (closely related species), Tilapia zillii, Oreochromis leucostictus, and Sarethorodon galilaeus, and the centropomid Nile perch congener, Lates macrophthalmus, have narrower diet breath in the presence of the native O. -

Fioravanti1 Received: 16 August 2019 /Accepted: 18 December 2019 # Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2020 Abstract In the Afrotropic region, the genus Clinostomum is represented by four accepted and four unnamed species distinguished using molecular data. Here, we describe one of the four unnamed species as Clinostomum ukolii n. sp. based on metacercariae from siluriform fishes (Synodontis batensoda, Schilbe intermedius) collected in Nigeria and South Africa. The new species is distin- guished by molecular data (39 new sequences of partial cytochrome c oxidase I ≥ 6.7% divergent from those of other species) and morphological differences from named and unnamed species in the same region. Metacercariae of C. ukolii n. sp. can be distinguished based on size, tegumental spines, and various aspects of the genital complex, including its position, lobation of the anterior testis, and the disposition and shape of the cirrus pouch. Although descriptions of new species of digeneans are typically based on the morphology of adults, we argue that in cases where data are available from metacercariae from regionally known species, new species can be described based on metacercariae, particularly when supported by molecular data, as here. Moreover, sub-adult reproductive structures can be clearly visualized in metacercaria of Clinostomum. Considering metacercariae as potential types for new species could advance clinostome systematics more rapidly, because metacercariae are encountered much more often than adults in avian definitive hosts. -

Adeyemi, S.O, Okpanachi, M.A And Toluhi, O.O Department of Biological Sciences, Benue State University, Makurdi. ABSTRACT The food and feeding adaptations of Synodontis batensoda in Gbedikere Lake, Bassa, Kogi State Nigeria were studied. Fish samples were collected from July to December 2008; the stomach contents were analyzed using frequency of occurrence method. The fish is an omnivore, feeding mainly on plant parts (25.06%), fish parts (10.09%), insect part (9.8%), crustaceans (9.91%), mollusk (10.1%) detritus (10.49%) and sand particles (16.8%), unidentified particles (7.75%).The length-weight relationship implied that adult male fish had the highest standard length (23.9cm) followed by the adult female (22.5cm) and the juveniles (9.0cm). KEYWORDS: Synodontis batensoda , stomach content, feeding adaptations, Gbedikere Lake. INTRODUCTION The fish family Mochokidae is presented mainly by genus Synodontis commonly known as catfish. Reed et al, (1967) described twenty Synodontis species found in Northern Nigeria, while Holden and Reed (1972) indicated that at least twenty one species have been identified in the Niger. The different Synodontis species vary in commercial status in different locations, many are important food fishes and some have attractive hues and exhibit behavioral characteristics that make them potential ornamental candidates. Synodontis accounts for important parts of the commercial catches in Northern Nigeria and, according to Reed et al (1967), they are available throughout the year. In the River Niger, Synodontis accounted for 18.00% by number and 18.68% by weight of the total fish caught (Mortwani and Kanwai 1970). -

FASAKIN 1Department of Fisheries, University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria 2Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Technology, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria Abstract The diversity, distribution and abundance of fish species in Ovia River, Edo state Nigeria was studied for 24 months using various fishing gears. The river was divided into three sampling stations. A total of 5,386 specimens were sampled made up of 81 fish species, 42 genera and 27 families. Mormyridae, Mochokidae and Cichlidae families were the most abundant, while the most abundant in terms of number of specimen in total catch were Mochokidae and Clariidae. Fish abundance showed higher catches during the wet season (>60%). The different stations showed marked ichthyofauna similarity but nearby stations had higher indices of similarity. Key words: Fish fauna, diversity, distribution, abundance, Ovia River. *Corresponding author Introduction Fish resources in Nigeria are exposed to over-fishing, destruction of aquatic life and natural habitats by pollution of water bodies. Unregulated and excessive use of obnoxious fishing practice and the deliberate disposal and dumping of toxic and hazardous wastes into water bodies are significant causes of massive fish kills and loss of aquatic life and habitats in the country (Adeyemo, 2004). Like every other river in the Niger Delta, Ovia River is regarded as having high fisheries potential with little or no information on its ichthyofauna. -
