Chapter One Introduction
CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 Project Overview The lubricant sub-sector of the downstream industry is one with so many potential that is capable of being a major source of revenue earner for the country, and has grown over the years with increase in the number of second hand passenger and commercial vehicles in the country calling for more frequent lubricant changes. Though Nigeria has an installed lubricant capacity of 600, 000 metric tonnes the current demand is 700 million litres which is about 1% of global demand. The lubricants market is driven by various steps being taken by government such as initiatives to increase the ease of doing business to boost manufacturing sector activities and the Nigeria Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) to emphasize investment in infrastructure. With the increase of import duty on finished lubricants to 30% and the recent 7.5 percent VAT on finished lubes in the country, the sectors have been opened up for further investment and the proposed project considered in this study is set to explore the given opportunity. Though there are presently 34 lube blending plants in Nigeria, only two of these (5.9%) are located in the south- south region of the country (DPR, 2020). This proposed lubricating oil blending plant project by Eraskon Nigeria Ltd is thus a private effort to support the government of Nigeria on how local production of lubricant can be increased to boost its domestic availability especially in the south-south region of the country. 1.2 Project Proponent Eraskon Nigeria Limited is a lubricant oil manufacturing company incorporated in Nigeria by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) with RC No. -

(*correspondent Author’s email: [email protected] Abstract: The present study compared the fatty acids, cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL), and high density lipoprotein (HDL) of four commercially important fresh-water fish species, Clarias gariepinus (CG), Oreochromis niloticus (ON), Synodontis budgetti (SB), and Mormyrops deliciosus MD), using Gas Chromatographic and High Performance Lipid Chromatographic methods. Results showed that the percent polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) determined from CG were, 35.709, 14.310, 45.845 and 32.345, from Amassoma, Swali, Tombia (in Bayelsa State, South-South of Nigeria) and Lagos rivers respectively. The prominent omega-3 fatty acid determined were eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA); while the major omega-6 fatty acid was eicosatetraenoic acid (AA). Cholesterol content of fishes from the study rivers ranged from 5.080 to 5.570 (mg/100g DW) and was more or less significantly lower than that from Lagos river (in a populous city in the South-west of Nigeria), (p < 0.05). Cholesterol, HDL and LDL content in the four fish species were according to the decreasing order CG > ON >SR .MD. The Niger Delta is one of the most prominent regions in Nigeria, endowed with several water bodies that are distributed as freshwater like rivers, lakes, streams and creeks. There is paucity of information on the limnology of the river which will provide information on the ecological status relevant for sustainable management. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the physico-chemical parameters, diversity and abundance of plankton, macrozoobenthos and fish fauna of Ibuya River. Surface water (72), plankton (72) and macrozoobenthic (72) samples were collected monthly from September 2012 to February 2014 at randomly selected stations (i-iv) along the river. Water temperature, pH and Dissolved Oxygen (DO) were measured in situ, while hardness, turbidity, phosphate (PO₄3˗), sulphate (SO₄2-), heavy metals including cadmium (Cd), Iron (Fe) and lead (Pb), were determined in the laboratory according to APHA method. Plankton samples were collected with plankton net (mesh size, 55µm), identified and counted microscopically. Macrozoobenthos were collected with Van-Veen grab (0.086 m2), identified and counted macroscopically. Fish samples were collected with gill net (mesh size 45mm), identified and counted. All identifications including pollution indicator species were done using standard identification keys. Species diversity was determined with Shannon-Wiener index HI. Descriptive statistics, student t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) were used for analysis of data at α0.05. -

ABSTRACT Th e genus Synodontis Cuvier, 1816 (Siluriformes, Mochokidae) numbers about 120 species and is exclusive to the freshwater of Africa except Maghreb and Cape Province. It is one of the most widespread catfi sh of African freshwater. Th e Synodontis fossil record covers the last 18 Myr and most of the Synodontis fossil bones are found in a disarticulated state. Th e identifi cation of the fossils at a specifi c level is so far impossible, because we lack an osteological study of the species. Here, we present the study of the osteology of eleven Synodontis species living in Chad: S. batensoda Rüppell, 1832, S. clarias (Linnaeus, 1758), S. courteti Pellegrin, 1906, S. eupterus Boulenger, 1901, S. fi lamentosus Boulenger, 1901, S. membranaceus (Geoff roy Saint-Hilaire, 1809), S. nigrita Valenciennes, 1840, S. ocellifer Boulenger, 1900, S. schall (Bloch & Schneider, 1801), S. sorex Günther, 1864 and S. violaceus Pellegrin, 1919. Each species is characterized based on its bony anatomy. Th e morphological variability within and between the species is discussed. -

O Abstract: The investigation was carried out to estimate cholesterol content in synodontis budgetti from amassoma, tombia, swali and Otuokpoti Rivers in bayelsa state using the gas chromatography. The result obtained showed the cholesterols content from Otuokpoti River (5.67±0.17), from Amassoma River (5.34±0.02), from Swali River (5.17±0.02), from Tombia River (5.12±0.02). The cholesterol content in synodontis budgetti showed a significant decrease (p<0.05) in Okuokpoti, Amassoma, Swali and Tombia Rivers. All cholesterol content showed significant difference (p<0.05) relative to each other. The differences in cholesterol content of fish samples synodontis budgetti from the four rivers may be as a result of age, gender, diet, geographical origin and season of the fish. An ichtyological survey targeted to Mochokidae family was conducted in Niger River to document the community structure of these taxa in order to contribute to species management and sustainable exploitation. Fish individuals were sampled every month from February 2015 to July 2016 from artisanal fisheries and experimental catches using gillnets, cast nets, seines and longlines. The results indicated that the Niger River in Benin was rich of fourteen (14) species belonging to one (1) genus, Synodontis. Numerically, three (3) species, Synodontis schall (74.50%), Synodontis membranaceus (16.79%) and Synodontis nigrita (2.24%) were the most abundant. Likewise, three (3) Mochokidae, Synodontis schall, Synodontis membranaceus and Synodontis clarias showed a wide distribution and consistently occurred in all sampling sites. Seasonaly, the flooding period was the most diverse season showing the highest Shannon-Weaver index of species diversity H’ =1.65. -

Abstract: The Kpong Headpond was the second created on the Volta River after Akosombo Dam, primarily as a source of hydroelectric power generation and potable water supply, and additionally, it has supported some fish production in Ghana since impoundment. The changes in fish community of the Kpong Headpond were studied to provide baseline information for strategies formulation to support the socio-economic development of the reservoir. The study identified changes in the fish community of the reservoir by comparing occurrence, composition, relative abundance and relative importance estimates of fish species, families and trophic groups, from available previous studies in the reservoir. From the collated information all fishes identified in the res- ervoir were categorised based on occurrence and importance as disappeared, appeared, permanent, declined or important, to show current status. The results indicated that the fish community has experienced a shift in the composition and relative abundance of important species, families and trophic groups in terms of number and weight, while remaining ecologically balanced. Representatives of the families Osteoglossidae, Centropomidae and Characidae have declined while representatives of the families Claroteidae, Cyprinidae and Cichlidae have increased. The aufwuch-detritus and herbivores declined while semi-pelagic omnivores increased resulting in a shift in dominance to benthic and semi pelagic omnivores.
