THE "VIA FRANCIGENA" and the ITALIAN ROUTES to SANTIAGO by Paolo CAUCCI VON SAUCKEN (Italy) 1988
THE "VIA FRANCIGENA" AND THE ITALIAN ROUTES TO SANTIAGO by Paolo CAUCCI VON SAUCKEN (Italy) 1988 http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paolo_Caucci_von_Saucken#Studi_ispanici The relationship between Italy and Santiago de Compostela dates back avery long way. Suffice it to point out that four of the 22 miracles described in Book II of the "Liber Sancti Jacobi" expressly concern Italian pilgrims. This shows that there was an interest in Santiago in the first half of the 12th century, and that specific links existed. Moreover, the frequent contacts between the Bishopric in Santiago de Compostela and Rome, many of which existed as a result of the pilgrims that went to one or other, are recorded in "Historia Compostellana", which also bears witness to the existence of Italian brotherhoods of former pilgrims as far back as 1120. It records that, on the occasion of a trip he made to Rome, to obtain the rank of Archbishopric for the bishopric in Santiago de Compostela, Bishop Porto was accompanied and supported by, " ceteri quam plures Ecclesiae beati jacobi confratres, qui Beatum jacobum-olim adierant, et seipsos ipsi apostoli subjugaverant. Propterea ecclesiam Beati jacobi usquequaque diligebant et eius Episcopum." Further proof of the strong links between Italy and Santiago, in the time of Gelmirez is provided by the fact that the sole relic of the apostle from Santiago cathedral was sent, after lengthy, voluminous correspondence, to Italy, there it prompted the establishment of a major centre of worship of St. James in Pistoia. Furthermore, as research into Italian involvement in pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela progresses, new information testifying to the existence of increasingly complex, intricate relations is constantly emerging. -

Neotectonic Evidence in the Quaternary Continental Carbonates from Southern Valdelsa Basin (Tuscany)
Il Quaternario Italian Journal of Quaternary Sciences 19(1), 2006 - 155-166 NEOTECTONIC EVIDENCE IN THE QUATERNARY CONTINENTAL CARBONATES FROM SOUTHERN VALDELSA BASIN (TUSCANY) Enrico Capezzuoli1 & Fabio Sandrelli1 1Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra, Via Laterina 8, 53100, Siena. e.mail: [email protected]; [email protected] ABSTRACT: E. Capezzuoli et al., Neotectonic evidence in the quaternary continental carbonates from southern Valdelsa Basin (Tuscany). (IT ISSN 0394-3356, 2006). Recognition of tectonic structures in Quaternary sediments is usually very difficult, mainly in detrital and uncemented deposits. On the contrary, Quaternary continental carbonates represent an important exception that have the quality of being potential indicators of neotectonics significance. Facies analyses of some Quaternary calcareous tufa succession in the Valdelsa Basin (Southern Tuscany) point out a neotectonics activity that have interested these deposits during the Middle Pleistocene-Holocene. Recognition of neotec- tonics activity is mainly based on identification of “anomalous” bedding of these recent deposits, in contrast with the original setting of their depositional environment. This evidence imply two tectonic phases in southern Valdelsa during the Middle-Late Pleistocene and the Late Pleistocene-Holocene. All this evidence will be useful for a better comprehension of the evolution of this Northern Apennine sector during the Quaternary. RIASSUNTO: E. Capezzuoli et al., Evidenze di neotettonica nei carbonati continentali quaternari della Valdelsa (Toscana). (IT ISSN 0394-3356, 2006). Osservazioni di campagna ed analisi di facies condotte sui depositi carbonatici continentali quaternari della Valdelsa meridionale (Provincia di Siena), hanno permesso il riconoscimento di evidenze di attività neotettonica. Amphorae on the Roman Villa at Aiano- Torraccia Di Chiusi (San Gimignano-Siena-Italy)"
"Amphorae on the Roman Villa at Aiano- Torraccia di Chiusi (San Gimignano-Siena-Italy)" Cavalieri, Marco Abstract Since 2005 an Italian-Belgian mission, carried out by the Université catholique de Louvain, part of the international project “VII REGIO. Valdelsa during the Roman Age and late Antiquity” brought to light the monumental remains of a Roman villa, inhabited between the 4rd and the 5th century C.E., and abandoned in the period between the end of the 5th and the beginning of the 7th century C.E. The ruins of the representative part of the villa, altered in the 4th c., consist of a room with apses and an opus signinum floor with limestone tesserae mosaics, surrounded by a structure characterized by curvilinear walls. Between the 6th and the 7th century C.E. the remains of the structure were occupied by a group of people of clear Germanic origin with a consequent change in function. The space was parceled to host various workshops in which ceramics, iron and other materials were produced. In some of the re-adapted rooms structures for glass production can be recognized. MONTEPULCIANO's PALAZZO COMUNALE, 1440 – C.1465: RETHINKING CASTELLATED CIVIC PALACES in FLORENTINE ARCHITECTURAL and POLITI
MONTEPULCIANO’S PALAZZO COMUNALE, 1440 – c.1465: RETHINKING CASTELLATED CIVIC PALACES IN FLORENTINE ARCHITECTURAL AND POLITICAL CONTEXTS Two Volumes Volume I Koching Chao Ph.D. University of York History of Art September 2019 ABSTRACT This thesis argues for the significance of castellated civic palaces in shaping and consolidating Florence’s territorial hegemony during the fifteenth century. Although fortress-like civic palaces were a predominant architectural type in Tuscan communes from the twelfth century onwards, it is an understudied field. In the literature of Italian Renaissance civic and military architecture, the castellated motifs of civic palaces have either been marginalised as an outdated and anti-classical form opposing Quattrocento all’antica taste, or have been oversimplified as a redundant object lacking defensive functionality. By analysing Michelozzo’s Palazzo Comunale in Montepulciano, a fifteenth-century castellated palace resembling Florence’s thirteenth-century Palazzo dei Priori, this thesis seeks to address the ways in which castellated forms substantially legitimised Florence’s political, military and cultural supremacy. Chapter One examines textual and pictorial representations of Florence’s castellation civic palaces and fortifications in order to capture Florentine perceptions of castellation. This investigation offers a conceptual framework, interpreting the profile of castellated civic palaces as an effective architectural affirmation of the contemporary idea of a powerful city-republic rather than being a symbol of despotism as it has been previously understood. Chapters Two and Three examine Montepulciano’s renovation project for the Palazzo Comunale within local and central administrative, socio-political, and military contexts during the first half of the fifteenth century, highlighting the Florentine features of Montepulciano’s town hall despite the town’s peripheral location within the Florentine dominion. -
