Historic Route 66 stretches across the U.S. from Chicago to Los Angeles.Along the way, in Lebanon, is a growing popular landmark stop for any history enthusiast, tourist, or local Ozark resident.Shepherd Hills Factory Outlets started in the outlet busin~ss in 1972 as an outlet for locally made Walnut Bowls. Ida and Rea Reid, founders, began their entrepreneurship operating a motel in the 1960's called the

Capri Motel which was located right along Route 66, known today as Interstate 44. < They sold the Capri Motel in 1966 and along with their sons, Rod and Randy, started a new business in 1972 called the Shepherd Hills Gift Shop which was leased as a part of the Shepherd Hills Motel and happened to be located in virtually the same spot as the Capri MoteL

Later, as they began expanding, they bought a portion of the motel as well as the gift shop and began construction of their current building in 1999. In the meantime, Shepherd Hills added additional locations including those in Osage Beach, MO, Branson, MO, and Eddyville, KY , and brought in other quality products to the lineup including Chicago Cutlery, Denby Pottery, and of course Case XX pocketknives--making the latter also available through catalog mail order and eventually on the web at www.CaseXX.com. CAVE STATE CRUISERS CLEAN UP hundred acres along the Gasconade River in 1927. Frank was the former Vice President of the Automotive Division for Shell Oil, with headquarters in St. Louis and intended to retire and create a working farm on the property. His job with Shell had required traveling around the country on board the company aircraft, which was often piloted by James Doolittle. Doolittle, a fellow Shell executive and test pilot, would lead the first bombing raid against Tokyo during World War II. During one of the flights for Shell,Frank had spotted the ideal location for the farm. It was just off the newly commissioned US 66. Frank established the Gascozark Hills Resort, coining the name by combining "Gasconade" for the river with "Ozark" for the region where it was located. The resort offered modern cabins, with a big concrete swimming pool, a dining hall and lodge as well as facilities for tennis and other sports. Horse riding and hayrides were also offered. After a name change to the Gasconade Hills Resort, it is still in business today. In 1931, Jones opened the Gascozark Farmer's Exchange a little over a mile from the farm at the intersection of Route 66 and MO 133 near Richland. It offered International Harvester farm equipment, tools, feed and gasoline. A few homes nearby and Caldwell's Cafe and Cabins across the road became known as the community of Gascozark By the mid 1930s Rudy and Clara Schuermann were operating a cafe in the old exchange. They decided they needed to remodel and hired a "rock man" named Lilliard to give the front and sides a new • look He covered the exterior with sandstone slabs held together with mortar, a type of construction dubbed "Giraffe Rock" Frank and Ila's farm became the Gascozark Hereford Ranch, which grew to over 750 acres. The ranch produced award winning Hereford cattle and provided the milk for Ft.Leonard Wood.Frank died in November 1945 at the age of 56. The Gascozark Cafe and Truck Stop was a very busy place and served as a Greyhound Bus Stop. In the early 1950s, it became the Spinning Wheel Tavern. After the tavern closed, it was used as a private residence and then was abandoned to the elements. It was engulfed in vegetation before the Cave State Cruisers came along and created another place to stop on Missouri's Mother Road.

Chief Black Dog of the Osage blazed the trail connecting the villages and hunting grounds between present day Baxter Springs and Arkansas City, Arkansas. When an 1836 treaty forced the Cherokee Nation from the southeastern US, all of what is now Cherokee County was designated as the Cherokee Neutral Lands, a buffer between Missouri and the lands of the Osage. A settlement called Short Creek sprung up along the stream north of Baxter Springs. The Indians knew there was lead in the area, but most settlers didn't think much of it until April of 1876, when pure lead ore was found at the bottom of a farmer's well. A group of investors from Baxter Springs established a mining camp that they called Bonanza. The boom came in February 1877. Two boys digging for worms discovered a major deposit oflead ore along Short Creek. Within months ten thousand people descended on the area and the Empire Town Company and the Galena Town Company had established rival town sites on opposite sides of the creek. The two towns were incorporated a day apart in June, 1877. "Red Hot Street" connecting Empire City and Galena was known for gambling, prostitution, public drunkenness and violent death. In 1877 Empire City went so far as to erect a stockade to stop travel between the rivals. The townspeople of Galena burned it down and Empire City became part of Galena in 1907. During a century of mining in the Tri-State District of Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma, more than 4,000 mines produced 23 million tons of zinc and four million tons of lead ore. The last mine in the district, located west of Baxter Springs, closed in 1970. The Eagle-Picher Smelter was the largest employer in town but the jobs are gone and the land was scarred. After a massive cleanup, nature is taking back the land once known as "Hell's Half Acre." When the federal system was being laid out in 1925, the hard roads already in place to serve the mining industry put Cherokee County on the highway connecting Chicago and Los Angeles proposed by Oklahoma Highway Commissioner Cyrus Avery. The last section of Route 66 in Kansas to be paved and a new railroad viaduct was dedicated with a bottle of

The overpass will soon undergo restoration. During the Great Depression, Route 66 became John Steinbeck's "Road of flight" portrayed in the Grapes of Wrath. The demand for lead had dropped sharply after World War I and jobs were scarce. In 1935, violence swept Galena when miners tried to form a union. Gunfire rang out over Route 66. Governor Alf Landon declared martial law and sent in the Kansas National Guard. The post World War II years were the Golden Age of Route 66. Roadside businesses thrived and Baxter Springs became a trucking center. But the Interstate Highway arrived just as the mines were playing out. Interstate 44 opened in 1961 and bypassed Kansas completely in order to connect to the Will Rogers Turnpike in Oklahoma, which had opened in 1957. In 1961, a bypass was completed around the Rainbow Curve and the Brush Creek Bridge north of Baxter Springs. In 1963, Route 66 was relocated in Galena from Main Street to

Seventh Street, angling norrhward near Mineral Avenue to become a four-lane divided highway and connect wirh Missouri's new 66 just east of rhe state line. Galena is undergoing a revival today, due in part to Route 66 tourism and the determination of the locals. When a deteriorating home at Front and Main Streets was being restored, the owners good naturedly hinted it might have been a brothel owned by "Galena's Bloody Madam," Ma Staffieback. Legend says the Staffieback family murdered up to 50 miners in the 1890s, but they were only convicted in one case and the townspeople burned down the real ramshackle brothel. But tourists can still sleep in the style of a 1890s brothel at the home, now dubbed the "Murder Bordello." "Four Women on the Route," Renee Charles, Betty Courtney, Melba Rigg and Judy Courtney restored the old vacant Kan-Ov'Iex station and turned it into a visitor's center in 2006. Now known as "Cars on the Route," the station features a diner, restored Kan-Ov'Iex pumps out front and a selection of Route 66 memorabilia. he Meramec River is a temperamental stream that rises from a spring in the southern Missouri Ozarks T and twists and turns 218 miles to join the Mississippi south of St. Louis. Between St. James and Fenton, Route 66 is never more than a few miles from the Meramec. Meramec Caverns and the Meramec State Park are just off the highway and are escapes for the city and suburban dwellers. According to H. R. Schoolcraft, in "A View of the Lead Mines of Missouri," (1819), On October 10, 1700 French Jesuit Father Jacques Gravier wrote in his journal: "We discovered the River Miaramegoua, where the very rich lead mine is situated, 12 or 13 leagues from its mouth." It's likely that Father Gravier was trying to spell out the way the Native Americans pronounced it. Gravier said it meant "river of the ugly fish," probably catfish. Early maps spelled it many ways, including Maramig, Mirameg, Merramec, and Merrimac, eventually settling on Meramec. The "river of the ugly fish" can be scenic and placid or turn into a raging torrent in a matter of hours, as it did in 1982 when the waters wiped out the town of Times Beach. The tragedy was compounded when the residents learned the community was contaminated with dioxin. Times Beach was
