Santería: From Slavery to Slavery Kent Philpott This, my second essay on Santería, is necessitated for two reasons. One, requests came in for more information about the religion; and two, responses to the first essay indicated strong disagreement with my views. I will admit that my exposure to Santería,1 at that point, was not as thorough as was needed. Now, however, I am relying on a number of books about the religion, all written by decided proponents, plus personal discussions with a broad spectrum of people. In addition, I have had more time to process what I learned about Santería as I interacted with the following sources: (1) Santería the Religion,by Migene Gonzalez-Wippler, (2) Santería: African Spirits in America,by Joseph M. Murphy, (3) Santería: The Beliefs and Rituals of a Growing Religion in America, by Miguel A. De La Torre, (4) Yoruba-Speaking Peoples, by A. B. Ellis, (5) Kingdoms of the Yoruba, 3rd ed., by Robert S. Smith, (6) The Good The Bad and The Beautiful: Discourse about Values in Yoruba Culture, by Barry Hallen, and (7) many articles that came up in a Google search on the term "Santería,” from varying points of view. My title for the essay, "From Slavery to Slavery," did not come easily. I hope to be as accepting and tolerant of other belief systems as I can be. However, the conviction I retained after my research was one I knew would not be appreciated by those who identified with Santería. Santería promises its adherents freedom but succeeds only in bringing them into a kind of spiritual, emotional, and mental bondage that is as devastating as the slavery that originally brought West Africans to the New World in the first place. -

Méndez a b s t r a c t This essay addresses how religion and gentrification become interconnected for the Puerto Rican community in Ernesto Quiñonez’s Chango’s Fire. The move from Pentecostalism to Santeria for the protagonist Julio emphasizes an assertion of ethnic identity that the community of Spanish Harlem needs in order to interrogate the process of gentrification. Moreover, an analysis of the religious discourses in this novel exposes economic and social inequities and their critical impact on Spanish Harlem as well as demonstrates the significant connection between ethnic and religious identity for Latino/as. El trabajo se centra en Ochún, Yemayá, Changó y Orula, porque fueron las deidades más mencionadas durante mi visita a la Isla. La metodología usada consiste en el uso de dos disciplinas: un análisis literario de Natalia Bolívar Arosteguí unido a una investigación antropológica, incorporando la etnografía a través de la observación participante y las entrevistas formales. -

SPRING 1990 33 The Orisha Changó and Other African Deities In Cuban Drama Robert Lima The body of Cuban drama contains many accretions from African sources. Among the most important of these is the presence of ancient deities from the Yoruba pantheon, a vast hierarchy of spiritual entities termed Orishas who range from the aloof Maker (variously Olofi, Olorum, Olodumare), through the hermaphroditic creative force (Obatalá) and the Mother of the gods (Yemayá), to those associated with specific aspects of Nature (Changó, for one).1 These are the traditional deities still worshipped in what is present- day Nigeria and its environs. Many of the Orishas figure prominently in modern Cuban life and are manifest in the drama of the Caribbean island because they have had a long history there. Religio-mythological beliefs from many sectors of Africa came to the "New World" between 1517 and 1873 with the enslaved peoples of the continent. These cultural elements survived the shock of transplantation and the subsequent break in continuity, first through the preservation of the deeply- rooted indigenous oral tradition by the slaves themselves, and, in due course, through the adoption of written expression for lyrical and narrative literature, old and new, both by educated slaves or freemen and white folklorists. All kinds of African and Afro-Cuban folklore came to the fore in the process and, having been collected in written form, survived alongside Hispanic traditions. Despite the adversities suffered by the Africans through their diaspora and the oppressiveness of those who enslaved them, particularly in regard to their religious practices, their culture persevered. -
