    CHAIRMEN OF SENATE STANDING COMMITTEES [Table 5-3] 1789–present INTRODUCTION The following is a list of chairmen of all standing Senate committees, as well as the chairmen of select and joint committees that were precursors to Senate committees. (Other special and select committees of the twentieth century appear in Table 5-4.) Current standing committees are highlighted in yellow. The names of chairmen were taken from the Congressional Directory from 1816–1991. Four standing committees were founded before 1816. They were the Joint Committee on ENROLLED BILLS (established 1789), the joint Committee on the LIBRARY (established 1806), the Committee to AUDIT AND CONTROL THE CONTINGENT EXPENSES OF THE SENATE (established 1807), and the Committee on ENGROSSED BILLS (established 1810). The names of the chairmen of these committees for the years before 1816 were taken from the Annals of Congress. This list also enumerates the dates of establishment and termination of each committee. These dates were taken from Walter Stubbs, Congressional Committees, 1789–1982: A Checklist (Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, 1985). There were eleven committees for which the dates of existence listed in Congressional Committees, 1789–1982 did not match the dates the committees were listed in the Congressional Directory. The committees are: ENGROSSED BILLS, ENROLLED BILLS, EXAMINE THE SEVERAL BRANCHES OF THE CIVIL SERVICE, Joint Committee on the LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, LIBRARY, PENSIONS, PUBLIC BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS, RETRENCHMENT, REVOLUTIONARY CLAIMS, ROADS AND CANALS, and the Select Committee to Revise the RULES of the Senate. For these committees, the dates are listed according to Congressional Committees, 1789– 1982, with a note next to the dates detailing the discrepancy.

OLSEN Fair Connections Women’s Separatism and the Lewis and Clark Exposition of 1905 “THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE, MANY of whom stood in the hot sun for hours,” gathered at 2:00 p.m. on July 6, 905, on Lakeview Terrace by the Columbia Court of the Lewis and Clark Centennial and American Pacific Exposition and Oriental Fair in Portland, Oregon. The crowds had arrived to witness the unveiling of a bronze statue of Sacajawea, the Shoshone woman recently popularized by Eva Emery Dye in The Conquest: The True Story of Lewis and Clark. Visitors who flocked to the celebration made attendance that day one of the largest since the fair’s opening day. Speakers at the event — which followed by one day the official closing of the thirty-seventh annual convention of the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) in Portland — included Abigail Scott Duniway, Oregon’s own suffragist, and Susan B. Anthony, legendary leader of the woman suffrage movement. Regional press coverage of both the NAWSA convention and the Sacajawea statue unveiling was extensive and positive, illustrating the success of Oregon clubwomen’s leadership and networking. During the years and months preceding the opening of the Lewis and Clark Exposition, Oregon women sought to modify their practice of women’s separatism, a long-standing tradition of women’s organizations in the nine- teenth and early-twentieth centuries, and to use their experience and exper- tise within the new model of integration — that is, to work collaboratively with male organizers of the fair. Many Oregon women were experienced in organizing and financing world’s fairs.

LARSELL Oregon State Hospital THE FIRSTREFERENCE to insanityamong white men in the Northwest occurs in connectionwith a massacre by the Indians of one of the tradingposts of theAmerican Fur Com pany built by Andrew Henry. Ross Cox states thatHenry's postwas destroyedin 1808,1but Henry did not join theAmeri can Fur Company until 1809. The attack on his post at the Three Forks of theMissouri occurred inApril, 1810. Whether itwas from thisor someother post that the subject of the fol lowingparagraph escaped, is not clear. All but one of the fur traderswere killed, according to the account. The one who escaped had wandered about for someweeks when he was cap turedby the savages in theSnake River country. He had suf feredsuch hardship in themeantime thathe had becomemental ly unbalanced. Instead of killing and scalping him, as would have been the fate of a normal individual under the circum stances, the superstitiousattitude of the savages toward the mentally deranged caused them to care for him.
