THE NORTH STAR CHRONICLES – a newsletter primarily for the model railway fraternity Volume 6 no 5 May 2018 Editor: David Cairns e-mail: [email protected] Website for back copies: [email protected] Phone: +27 82 653 5642 Editorial This month’s North Star Chronicles is a bit of a cheat insofar as the primary feature is the Isle of Man and the meat of the article thereon was written while I was editor of the Workbench, the newsletter of the Durban Society of Model Engineers. In my defence I cite the fact that I was away for much of April so time to draft a new NSC was limited. Be that as it may, the subject is dear to my heart. For those interested in railways, particularly steam operated narrow gauge ones, and tramlines, and who are looking for a prototype to model which runs on either 32mm or 45mm track, look no further. I highly recommend a visit to the Island. One piece of advice, do so in the British ‘summer’ and take an umbrella and raincoat. It rains a lot on the Isle of Man! The Isle of Man Located in the middle of the Irish Sea, from the top of the highest ‘mountain’ (formerly accessible by tram) on a clear day the 4 home countries of Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Island are visible. The Isle of Man was originally settled by Celts and Vikings. It is difficult to find the exact words to describe the island but time capsule is certainly apt with respect to some of its transport facilities. -

Hampshire Area Garden Railway Group (incorporating the Hampshire area of the Association of 16mm Narrow Gauge Modellers and the Southdown Railway Co.) Associate members of Fareham & District Model Railway Club January 2013 A Happy and Prosperous New Year to all readers. Well, by this time 2012 we’d been well chilled and seen snow in some areas – this year there’s been rain and temperatures around 12 degrees. It would be ideal except for the back garden resembling a lake at times. Fortunately, a window in the rain allowed some running to take place in Totton between Christmas and the End of 2012. We saw Rod’s Regner 2-10-2 running (as depicted last month) complete with a transporter wagon for standard gauge stock plus the more usual narrow gauge vehicles. Looking right at home on a trestle and hauling logs from the other side of the pond was a Climax locomotive – one of the more inventive methods of ensuring the maximum traction with lighter axle loadings from the USA, in comparison of course to the Shays but with a cylinder each side of the boiler rather than having them all on one side. From rather closer to home, William B- J’s detailed “Joan” also put in an appearance later on, initially suffering from a blocked gas jet that had to be rectified before steam could be raised. Once in steam, “Joan” rumbled round the track on manual control, the train including one of the WLLR private owner wagons “J.L.L.Peate & Sons” recently produced specially via TrackShack in the Isle of Man. -

Peter’s Railway is an intriguing story about Peter and his Grandpa building and operating a miniature steam railway on a farm. The books are written by Christopher Vine, a Chartered Engineer who loves railways and anything mechanical or electrical. They are his way of passing on his love and knowledge of engineering to today’s youngsters. Left – a press cutting from The Railway Magazine guide to modelling. There are hardback books, paperbacks, and an Activity book. Between them they cover a huge range of stories, engineering and science. Peter’s Railway books can be purchased in the Wharf shop. Christopher Vine has also provided the display alongside William Finlay, on the ground floor of this museum. This explains with clear graphics how steam engines work and is in the style of the Peter’s Railway series … story telling with serious engineering and technical explanations. Winifred / Alice On the ground floor of this museum you can find the locomotive “Rough Pup”, one of many small locomotives built by Hunslet of Leeds for use in North Wales slate quarries. “Sister” locomotives ‘Alice’ and ‘Winifred’ are based on the Bala Lake Railway [‘Alice’ – above – was photographed there in October 2019]. They feature in the children’s books written by Pauline Hazelwood. Published by Saddletank Books / 07876 487427 / www.saddletankbooks.com These “true engine stories” have gone on to feature “Peter Pan – the most travelled engine”, which is now based on the Leighton Buzzard Railway; “Polar Bear” and “Sea Lion”; locomotives of the Groudle Glen Railway on the Isle of Man and “Isabel” built by W G Bagnall Ltd of Stafford, which can now be seen on the Amerton Railway. -

SEA LION 2-4-0T 7/8ths SCALE • 45 mm GAUGE ‘Sea Lion’ was built in 1896 for the 2′ gauge Groudle Glen SPECIFICATIONS Railway on the Isle of Man where it still operates today. The Scale 7/8 ths locomotive was built by W.G. Bagnall & Co., Stafford and delivered to the line in May of that year, the only loco until Gauge 45 mm joined in 1905 by sister locomotive ‘Polar Bear’. Initially the Mini. radius 48 in. locomotive carried an olive green livery with vermilion and yel- Dimensions 9.5 x 3.75 x 5.75 in. low lining and the name carried on the side water tank in gold Construction Brass & stainless steel leaf, with round spectacle cab windows – ‘Polar Bear’ was fitted with rectangular windows to improve driver visibility. The Power Live steam, butane fired locomotive was equipped with unusual valve gear patented by Boiler Copper, single flue E.E. Baguley and is one of only two locomotives fitted with this Simplified Stephenson’s link to remain in existance. By the 1920 season the locomotives Safety valve were out of traffic and the line purchased two battery electric locomotives that took the steam engine names. NORTH BY ELECTRIC / Douglas - Laxey - Ramsey Step aboard your tram car at the Manx Electric Railway terminus at Douglas situated at the northern end of Douglas promenade. Sit back and relax as the spectacle of the Manx countryside passes slowly by. The Manx Electric Railway hugs the Island’s east coast, passing through leafy glens, gorse topped hills and amazing coastal scenery on its way to Laxey and Ramsey in the north. This route has many stops, giving you the opportunity to explore some of the Island’s most stunning Victorian glens and coastal areas. Laxey, approximately half way on your journey, is home to the famous Laxey Wheel – the world’s largest water wheel. The picturesque village is also home to the newly opened Mines Railway and the starting point for the Snaefell Mountain Railway. Ramsey in the north also has plenty to offer in the way of family entertainment with its long sandy beaches and the Mooragh Park boating lake. Frequent buses are also available for journeys to the Curraghs Wildlife Park where you can ride the Orchid Line – a miniature railway. Please read all the instructions thoroughly before running for the first time. 2. Never let the engine run out of water. 3. When refilling the gas, do not have any naked flame present, and NO SMOKING! 4. Do not pick up the engine by the bodywork, chimney or boiler, especially when hot. 5. Only pick up the engine by the buffer beams and, when hot, use the gloves provided or a cloth. 6. Do not stand over the chimney. Ejected boiling water or steam may cause serious injury. 7. Do not open the smoke box door while the engine is alight. 2 8. Constant supervision of the boiler water level is imperative as the gas CAN outlast the water. Failure to do so will be treated as misuse and is not covered by the warranty. The boiler will require topping up about every 10 minutes. 9. Failure to properly control the gas will result in over-heating the loco and will cause damage to the mechanics and the paintwork and will not be covered by warranty. General Hints As with all operating machinery, whether model or full size, wear will occur. In the model steam locomotive much can be done to help prolong its life and decrease the amount of time required in the workshop for servicing. -
