THE NORTH STAR CHRONICLES – a newsletter primarily for the model railway fraternity Volume 6 no 5 May 2018 Editor: David Cairns e-mail: [email protected] Website for back copies: [email protected] Phone: +27 82 653 5642 Editorial This month’s North Star Chronicles is a bit of a cheat insofar as the primary feature is the Isle of Man and the meat of the article thereon was written while I was editor of the Workbench, the newsletter of the Durban Society of Model Engineers. In my defence I cite the fact that I was away for much of April so time to draft a new NSC was limited. Be that as it may, the subject is dear to my heart. For those interested in railways, particularly steam operated narrow gauge ones, and tramlines, and who are looking for a prototype to model which runs on either 32mm or 45mm track, look no further. I highly recommend a visit to the Island. One piece of advice, do so in the British ‘summer’ and take an umbrella and raincoat. It rains a lot on the Isle of Man! The Isle of Man Located in the middle of the Irish Sea, from the top of the highest ‘mountain’ (formerly accessible by tram) on a clear day the 4 home countries of Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Island are visible. The Isle of Man was originally settled by Celts and Vikings. It is difficult to find the exact words to describe the island but time capsule is certainly apt with respect to some of its transport facilities. -

1 RAILS BY THE SEA 2 RAILS BY THE SEA In what ways was the development of the seaside miniature railway influenced by the seaside spectacle and individual endeavour from 1900 until the present day? University of York Department of History September 2012 3 Abstract Little academic research has been undertaken concerning Seaside Miniature Railways as they fall outside more traditional subjects such as standard gauge and narrow gauge railway history and development. This dissertation is the first academic study on the subject and draws together aspects of miniature railways, fairground and leisure culture. It examines their history from their inception within the newly developing fairground culture of the United States towards the end of the 19th. century and their subsequent establishment and development within the UK. The development of the seaside and fairground spectacular were the catalysts for the establishment of the SMR in the UK. Their development was largely due to two individuals, W. Bassett-Lowke and Henry Greenly who realized their potential and the need to ally them with a suitable site such as the seaside resort. Without their input there is no doubt that SMRs would not have developed as they did. When they withdrew from the culture subsequent development was firmly in the hands of a number of individual entrepreneurs. Although embedded in the fairground culture they were not totally reliant on it which allowed them to flourish within the seaside resort even though the traditional fairground was in decline. -

Predicting Locomotive Performance
PREDICTING LOCOMOTIVE PERFORMANCE . W. B. Hall. F R Eng., F.I.Mech.E. The more efficient locomotives tested towards the end of the ‘steam era’ had overall thermal efficiencies of around 7 or 8 percent when working at optimum conditions; that is, the work done at the drawbar was 7 or 8 percent of the calorific value of the coal burned. When account is taken of the energy losses from the boiler (mainly unburned fuel and heat carried away by the products of combustion) and of mechanical losses between the cylinders and the drawbar, the residual thermal efficiency referred to the cylinders could be as high as 14% or 15 %. By comparison, the efficiency of a perfect heat engine operating with similar steam conditions and exhausting to the atmosphere would be around 20%. The evolution of designs capable of the above performance had proceeded against a background of considerable mechanical ingenuity and engineering insight, but with an almost total lack of a theoretical framework for some of the more important processes involved. Mechanics and to some extent properties of materials were exceptions, but until the early part of the 20 th century the theoretical understanding of fluid mechanics, heat transfer and irreversible thermodynamics was not adequate to provide a theoretical framework for crucial aspects of design. Design ‘rules’ there were in abundance, but many were limited to only small variations from the test data from which they had been derived; most were purely empirical, and some were dimensionally unsound. The situation in the 1930s is well illustrated in a series of articles in the Railway Gazette by E.L.Diamond 1 which reviews both the nature of the problem and the many attempts to produce theoretical guidelines for design purposes. -

When, ten days ago, the first copy of the " Evolution of the Steam Locomotive" was ready for sale, I did not expect to be called upon to write a preface for a new edition before 240 hours had expired. The author cannot but be gratified to know that the whole of the extremely large first edition was exhausted practically upon publication, and since many would-be readers are still unsupplied, the demand for another edition is pressing. Under these circumstances but slight modifications have been made in the original text, although additional particulars and illustrations have been inserted in the new edition. The new matter relates to the locomotives of the North Staffordshire, London., Tilbury, and Southend, Great Western, and London and North Western Railways. Royal Belgian Institute of Marine Engineers Crosshead bearing design meets new challenges Proposed improvements to crosshead bearings rely on new materials and processes by Doug Woodyard ew approaches to bearing materials, bearing design and production methods for low speed engines are driven by N higher firing pressures. Bearings need to be engineered to balance load capability with the tribological requirements of the application. The crankshaft of a two-stroke, low speed engine is connected to the piston via a connecting rod, crosshead and piston rod. Crosshead bearing movement is solely oscillating and the load vector is always directed downward; reliable hydrodynamic lubrication and oil supply thus become difficult to ensure. One solution is for hydrostatic lubrication with an oil pressure of around 12 bar in specially created oil pockets. The crosshead pin is thereby raised briefly at each revolution to ensure the oil supply. Two different crosshead bearing designs and lining materials are currently used: either a single lower bearing shell or a divided lower bearing shell, depending on the engine size. The common lining materials are aluminium-based A1Sn40 and whitemetal-based HM07. Future crosshead bearing designs must be robust and combine a high safety margin with high performance, Austrian bearing specialist Miba advises, requiring bearing designs based on A1Sn40 linings to be further improved. Extra wide lower crosshead shells rather than divided designs are proposed for long-stroke engines with a minimum bore of 400mm. Miba's new lower crosshead bearing design, termed a Patch-Work-Bearing, is based on a tri-metal configuration of steel-aluminium-tin 40-Synthec for Tier II engine platforms. -

Derailment of a passenger train near Clogwyn y Gwin South foot crossing, Welsh Highland Railway, 10 June 2018 Important Safety Message This derailment demonstrates the importance of heritage railways ensuring that specific and appropriate inspections and checks are built into the vehicle maintenance and overhaul regimes to monitor the integrity of all safety critical components which could cause derailment in the event of failure, and also to ensure that such components are reassembled correctly after overhaul. This is of particular importance on narrow gauge lines and railways that operate in mountainous areas. Summary of the accident At approximately 12:15 hrs on 10 June 2018, a passenger train, travelling from Porthmadog to Caernarfon on the Welsh Highland Railway, became derailed close to Clogwyn y Gwin South footpath crossing. The crossing is approximately 0.75 miles (1.2 km) north of Rhyd Ddu station. The train was travelling at around the maximum permitted speed at this location of 10 mph (16 km/h). The leading wheelset of the locomotive derailed on a right-hand curve. The driver immediately applied the train’s brake and the train came to a stop in a distance of about 30 metres. The train was hauled by a ‘Garratt’ steam locomotive, number 143, and comprised nine coaches. There were 74 passengers and 7 members of staff on board the train.
