They were iron ore mines, operating from the 1880s. theIn town centre is a commemorative display mounted at the roadside, representing a mine tub. Graham Billington transport of copper from nearby mines. As the mines became exhausted and their output dropped, the port was used to export china clay from the region's quarries. Despite competition from the port at Pentewan, which opened in 1826, and from Par, which opened shortly afterwards, Charlestown prospered from the rapid expansion in the export of china On On the public road above the east side of the harbour found I a short length of track still in place on the higher loading dock. I presume the gauge is also 2’4” but was unable to confirm this as the track was right on the edge of the drop and fenced for off safety reasons. Some covers for tipping chutes also remain in place. I assume that this is the last remaining evidence of the later high level line but as it is a single length of track there is no clue as to how this linked up to the line or of the line’s course to the clay dry. Gerry Balding Castle, Dalton Cumbria Visit 27/07/19. theIn National Trust-owned Dalton Castle, only open between 2pm and 5pm on Summer Saturdays, there are photographs of the local mines, with some striking pictures of the mine tubs at the Yarlside Pit, clay until the onset of the First World War. The last commercial load of clay to leave Charlestown did so in 2000. The harbour is now part of a maritime and shipwreck museum. A history of the area states that linhays of hopper form were cut into the rock and a 2’4” gauge tramway ran in tunnels to from the linhays to a clay dry. These are now part of the maritime and shipwreck museum. There was also a high level line from a later clay dry which served a lorry tip high above the harbour. , Cornwall PL25 3NX Graham Lelliott Photo and report: Charlestown Harbour Charlestown (2’4” gauge) Charlestown is a village and port on the south coast of Cornwall. Colin Davies Pier Railway Southend Essex Report 08/07/19. Living near to Southend as a child, my memories of the pier are of the 3’6” gauge 1949-built AC Cars electric trains, with their distinctive sound as they ran, caused by the wheelbases lining up with the rail joints. They completed 29 years service, after which there was no railway for a while until it was rebuilt using the 3’0” gauge Severn Lamb units in 1986. Recent refurbishment has included a new entrance to the pier, and old photos and drawings of Southend seafront have resurfaced. Uncovered from The Echo archives, they mostly show the iconic pier at different stages of its life. Whilst the railways above and the pre-1949 system are well known, the earlier lines are less documented. One illustration shows the first pier railway which opened around 1846 using hand propelled carts, running on a Snailbeach Railway and Mine and Railway Snailbeach Shropshire SY5 0NZ (2’4” gauge) Visit 19/06/19. The site is approached by the road opposite the village hall. Initially we made the mistake of following a signpost to an information board, as this had been twisted towards the village. However, when asking a local person the way we were regaled with stories about the line and had the alignment pointed out to us and were shown the railings that indicated where the line went under the road and where a house had been built over the alignment on an infilled cutting. He said when he first farmed there he had to pay a fee to cross the right of way. He also told us about a woman who used to use the train down the line each Friday, and about an accident where derailed trucks damaged a building. We were directed to a footpath in the middle of the village which led through a series of gates up to the old track bed, and we continued until passing between two walls with the remains of a point complete with a lever. This then opens out onto the main site. Graham Feldwick Martin O'Keeffe Certainly a surprising survivor! there is a story that the carriage torpedoed during was delivery, the following information is derived from research done by the Tourist Information Centre and the Director of Museum in conjunction with the Antofagasta and Bolivian Railway office, London and the Public Relations Officer FCAB, Chile and the Imperial War Museum. The carriage was built for the 2’6” gauge Antofagasta and Bolivian Railway (order no. 2945). It was a composite carriage which means it was first and second class. It was due for delivery on 29th April 1917 along with two more carriages. It arrived damaged in its crate and was returned on 28th September 1917 to the supplier. Much research was done to try to establish when it arrived back in this country but no information was found. The engraving on one of the doors is still visible and is FCAB which stands for Ferro Carril Antofagasta – Bolivia. 12 Narrow Gauge News 354 September 2019 Reviews published many years ago in Tonks & Taylor & Tonks in ago years many published previously were which those are drawings buildings and stock rolling locomotive, the However good. is illustrations these of reproduction the Generally history. its on bearing major a had which area the of context geographical the in railway the set which maps of number a are there Also, photos. white, & black as well as colour, and sepia many contains book The reading. interesting for makes also documents period of reproduction The detailed. and researched well is book the Thus papers. research Lee’s David on based railway the of coming the on chapter a wrote Taylor Alan line. the on data recorded also and years of number a over area the with familiar became Shorland-Ball Rob and locally living while material gathered and researched years later in and old year 4 as line the on travelled Lee David venture: collaborative a is book This book. These components have now parallel to their corresponding blocks and held in place with new fitted bolts. The front blocks, particularly those on the left hand side were found to be out of alignment. These were removed and refitted as above. The faces of those blocks closer to alignment were machined flat and to alignment with a belt sander, with final checks for flatness made with a plate of glass and engineers' blue. An unconventional method, which although time consuming, proved to be effective. Detailed measurements were taken to establish the axle positions and determine the thickness of replacement ‘slipper plates’ for the axleboxes. These are currently being machined and fitted, prior to re-wheeling the frame. Most of the components of the valve motion and gear were found to be in reasonable condition, except that a couple of the eccentric rods had been welded, perhaps as a repair following the collision with Underban been refurbished ready to assemble on the locomotive. This event had been advertised for months with one of the star attractions being the expectation of seeing 2-6-2T out901/1906) on the Welsh Highland main line after years of incarceration behind the fences of the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway. Tickets for unlimited travel between Porthmadog and Beddgelert were advertised at £50, with access to Boston Lodge included. For three days the price was discounted to £100. As we needed to leave on Sunday morning we opted for a day of line side photography on Friday with train riding, including visiting the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway, on Saturday. Although rostered to run on Saturday 22nd June I noticed the loco coupled to 4wDH Gest we visited Boston Lodge on Saturday lunchtime but did not think to ask thereif had been a problem. A dream – because in when1985 the original line at Humberston closed, no-one dared believe it would one day run again. Ten years ago, when we reopened, who then could have dreamed of today's progress? We have won national awards for what we have achieved and helped many more people discover the delights of holidays on the Lincolnshire coast. Thank you to everyone who has made this possible” He then invited the Mayor to load into the flames of carrying the commemorative headboard on a Jurassic return journey from South Loop to Walls Lane statio on 13th July. When the Lincolnshire Coast Light Railway was opened in August at1960 Humberston near Cleethorpes, it became the first heritage line in the world to be built by railway enthusiasts and it ran as public transport. A quarter of a century later, despite carrying two million passengers, it was forced to close and put its collection into store, but then in the mid-1990s, work began to rebuild it in the Skegness Water Leisure Park. it2009, In reopened and on Saturday 13th July the2019 tenth anniversary of that event was celebrated with the Mayor of Skegness, Cllr. Mark Dannatt, the Skegness mascot The Jolly Fisherman, guests, supporters and historic film provided by the Imperial War Museum and Germany's Bundesarchives. Sam Ellis, on behalf of the railway's hosts, the Skegness Water Leisure Park, told guests gathered around railway's historic steam locomtive that those volunteers who'd worked so hard for so many years to create today's superb railway and to restore its locomotives, carriages and wagons, that they should be proud of their achievement. The railway line runs for 2½ miles between the former Launceston station and Newmills. It is located on the site of the former London & South Western Railway line to which closed on 30th January 1967. The steam railway opened in 1983. Our train was hauled by Hunslet 0-4-0ST ex- loco. Work started in mid-July. At bridge 54 a seasonal stream which has discharged into Pound Lane for years (since the abutment was destroyed) has now been diverted along a shallow ditch back through the original culvert in the railway embankment. A tree stump has been removed from behind the existing Barnstaple abutment and loose, cracked stonework taken down and set aside for reuse in the reconstruction. The lower section of the abutment is in good condition and will be retained and strengthened by adding additional backing concrete. The initial work undertaken to expose the original foundations to the Lynton abutment has now been completed with the aid of a 32 tonne excavator. Unfortunately, the remaining foundation is in poor condition with loose stones and severely eroded mortar. This will be removed and the stones set aside for sorting and reuse in the new abutment. the other. The object seems to be to offset a very English-sounding original name with a Welsh one. We have received several reports from the Society’s visit on 03/08/19. Thirty-four members were able to view and ride on the industrial monorails at this location, which is associated with the short standard gauge preserved line. The collection, formerly at Blaenau Festiniog, also includes static narrow gauge items from the former collection.

On 3rd August I joined the society visit to the Monorail Collection at Nantmawr.

I was amazed at the size of the collection. Everywhere you looked there were over 100 pieces of rolling stock. We were allowed to ride on the 1/8 mile length of track. The ‘locos’ were manufactured either by Metalair of Wokingham or Road Machines (Drayton) Ltd. The highlight though was Monoloco, a steam monorail loco built by Century Millwrights of Sunbury -on-Thames. The stock was named according to where it had operated. Balance is maintained by horizontal guide wheels.

The Tanat Valley Railway itself is standard gauge. There was also a short length of 2’0” gauge track on which were located Lister 39005, 6887 an inspection car, 14005 a ‘steam tram’ and the most unusual item, an Isetta bubblecar (see photo, left).

Thanks to Mike Jackson for organising a visit to an amazing collection of unusual rail vehicles.

David Hangar

Nantmawr Visitor Centre is in a secluded wooded valley, approached by narrow lanes. How the railway equipment was brought there, unless by rail, I cannot imagine!

On the 2’ gauge, was an assortment of items. These included a Lister with cab, a Wkm railcar, Lister 14005 rebuilt with a vertical boiler and Rich Morris’ rebuilt Isetta bubble car. There was also a bicycle fitted with flanged wheels, a flat wagon carrying a loco’s battery box and a 2’ 6” gauge hand crane.

A short distance away was the Monorail Collection, the main object of our visit. A demonstration track, an approximate oval about 220 yards round, served a number of sidings. Two monorail units were available for anyone to drive. The ride was surprisingly smooth. The Industrial Railway Society handbook 18EL lists about 120 units here! Most carry the works number and a name, but I did not attempt to identify all of them, not least because about 30 (maybe more) were closely stored in an area full of tall nettles. In addition to the powered units, I counted at least 30 trailer units including several coaches, and of course there was 0-2-0ST OC Monoloco (see photo, right). (Below) The Society’Visits Officer tries his hand at driving a monorail Monorail track and rolling stock. Photo: David Hangar loco. Photo: John Moore Although one of the staff tried to lift the cab seat to show me the rear wheel, it was jammed. I can only assume that the centre of each driving wheel (which is in a circular frame so it can follow the track) had a fitting like the axles on Heywood’s 6 & 8 coupled locos, so the wheel can pivot but is still positively driven by the fixed (non-pivoted) axle supporting it.

Running were 20091 Partington and another. As built for use on construction sites the power units were controlled either from the track side or by rail mounted trips, and a skip body was fitted. No driver was carried. However, most of the power units seen, whether or not in use, had been shortened and a seat fitted for the driver. 2’ gauge vertical boilered loco. Photo: Sydney Leleux

Some monorail wagons with an interesting cargo. Photo: John Moore

I noted: Farringdon, Boston, Partington, Mexborough, Shepshed, Lincoln, Llangollen, Sleaford, Stroud, Esher and Hull.

Among a pile of bits was a steel 18in gauge wagon, body approximately 36x24x15 inches deep with 7 inch wheels on a 21 inch wheelbase. The measurements suggest it could well have come from the railway at John Knowles, Woodville, where Hunslet 0-40ST Jack (684/1898) (saved by the NGRS and now at Statfold) used to work.

This was certainly somewhere which was different!

Last November the railway launched an appeal to reconstruct the watering point built for the railway’s opening in 1865. The appeal has now raised over £1,200. This means that with PTG’s offer of sponsorship and other offers of support there is now sufficient finance available to move forward with the project. The watering point was used to supply locomotives based in the railway’s original locomotive shed at Ty Dŵr, before the current shed at Pendre came into use in 1867. When the siding to the shed was taken out the watering point was extended so that locomotives could watered on the then mineral extension to the base of the first incline to Bryn Eglwys quarry, now Nant Gwernol station. However, it will not burn the conventional heavy fuel oil that has been traditionally associated with oil burning steam locos. It will be used as a platform to test alternatives types of organic oils that could be used in the oil burning process. Here at Statfold we are looking to experiment with all these different types of oils and try to limit the effect of steam locomotives on the environment and to reduce their carbon footprint. It arrived just too late for inclusion in NGN353

Nine members [three no-shows] had an excellent day at this friendly horse-muck line, a genuine NG ‘industrial’ with an occasional passenger service.

Initially bookings had been very poor as there was to be no riding, but owner Ken Jackson kindly agreed to run a passenger service over the [fairly level] ‘Paddock’ section and to operate freight over the zig-zags. Sole working loco, battered MR 4wDM 9711/52 was in service with RH 4wDM 211609/41 in the back of the shed, OOU for many years.

I didn’t notice whether the rail-mounted sit-on Kubota garden mower was still on site.

After a number of passenger runs using the line’s bogie coach [the 4w coach wasn’t needed] attention turned to freight operations. Five skips of stable sweepings had been allowed to accumulate and these were worked, one at a time, down the zig-zags to the dump.

Two wagon-loads of firewood on a siding off the zig-zag section were then worked back uphill and the temporary points assembled over the main line to permit the timber to be worked upgrade to the house.

Nothing was too much trouble and with further passenger services and a demonstration run uphill to the loco shed before we dispersed, after an excellent day blessed with good weather. Generous refreshment facilities were much appreciated. Thanks are due to Ken for agreeing to the visit and to the Bredgar ‘support team’ of Chris, Tony, Martin, Neale and Paul.

A very good day - access to NG ‘Industrials’ is a rare privelige these days. There may be another visit next year if the demand is there. Overseas Narrow Gauge - edited by Alan Burgess Narrow Gauge News 354 September 2019 39 e (760mm gauge) (760mm gauge) Whiteman Village Junction boasts an impressive layout, fully signalled and with a large turntable. The line is recommended for a visit, ideally in the winter to see steam. The Park also features a working standard gauge tramway system, motor museum, tractor museum, and vintage bus museum and service. There is also a small set up showing some mining operations which includes a short length of nominal 2’0” gauge track and two skips. It is named "The Captain Hussey" This was not the only rail on Rottnest. Apparently there was a horse drawn tramway that took passengers from the army The line then winds its way up to the top of Oliver Hill passing the depot with two sidings; one into the railcar shed the other holding the derelict carriages. Previously two small diesels were used to haul two carriages and they lie disused alongside the railcar shed with one of the locomotives now preserved on the site of the Bassenden Railway Museum in Perth. The line uses a light section flat bottomed rail, presumably of WW11 vintage, on wooden sleepers and starts at a single platform just outside the main settlement. The first section of line from Settlement Station to Kingstown Barracks (now a holiday let building) was laid in the early 1990s when the line was restored to serve the tourist trade. There is a reversal here at Kingstown Station; although a direct cut lineoff exists it seems to get little use. A A single unit railcar is the only item of rolling stock in use. Whilst the family ‘enjoyed’ the beaches was I allowed to escape and explore the Oliver Hill Gun Battery, which is served by the Oliver Hill tramway. The tramway is to the standard WA 3’6” gauge and was laid out in WW11 to help with the construction and then the servicing of the battery of 9.5 inch guns that guarded the approaches to the port of Fremantle with some 2,500 personnel stationed here in WW11. Latvia is unique amongst the Baltic States in having existing 600mm ex Feldbahn railways, which are usually left-overs from German Army occupations. Lithuania also had 600mm railways; they disappeared long ago, but remains of the earthworks are still visible close to the river opposite Kaliningrad Oblast (Russia) where the road bridge between the two countries is located. Lisbon trams and . (900mm gauge).

The yellow trams are an important means of transport and an iconic feature of the city. The system seems no longer to be contracting and tram route number 24, closed over 20 years ago, has just been re-opened between Praca Luis de Camoes and Campolide. The star attraction is route 28 with the most interesting section being the highly contorted part with fearsome gradients through Alfama and Graca. However, it is worth travelling the full length of the line. This route is filled to standing capacity all day and it is better to start one’s journey at either end of the route (Martim Moniz and Prazeres).

The three funiculars are also interesting, with only the Bica line still being technically a funicular. This runs most of its way in a steep street in a neighbourhood with plenty of character. One of its cars is in yellow livery and the other is overwhelmed with graffitti.

Entroncamento, . (various gauges)

There are a number of railway museums up and down Portugal, but this is the main one. Entroncamento is a major railway junction (the ‘Crewe’ of Portuguese Railways) and has a good rail service connecting it to Lisbon (about one hour’s journey). The museum is divided by some active goods lines on which ancient diesels are often shunting. The staff are very helpful and the small admission charge is reduced by 50% if one has arrived by train.

Most of the museum exhibits are broad gauge/‘Iberian gauge’ with a fine stud of steam locos arranged around a roundhouse. Other locos and rolling stock are to be found in adjacent halls. Narrow gauge interest comprises:

- E 163 a metre gauge 0-4-4-0 Mallet tank loco (Henschel 7021 of 1905) on one of the roads of the roundhouse. - Pejao 60cm gauge 0-6-0WT by . This loco is very nicely restored whilst retaining all of the signs of a hard working life. It is the only loco in the museum which visitors can access the footplate. It carries a builder’plate with the number 1375 on it. The information panel alongside it states that it was (Above) Lisbon. Bica Funicular. This one was sold to Empresa Carbonifera do Douro at Pedorido in 1922 and worked there until the railway closed in 1974. - An extensive ground level dual 5 inch and 7¼ inch gauge miniature line. This seems to be in action only on special event days. - Two very fine, large-scale, model locos (around 10¼ and 15 inch gauge) and the chassis of a third. These are to be found in the small exhibits hall. The two complete models are La Lileputienne, an early 4-2-0, and a superb 4-6-2 1501, a full size version of which is in the roundhouse.

Sintra tramway (Sintra Electrico) (metre gauge)

Sintra is a very picturesque town in the hills to the north west of Lisbon. It is famous for its numerous palaces, but also has another attraction for visitors: the Sintra Tramway. The first section of this town tramway and inter-urban line was built in 1903. At its full extent the line linked the town to the railway station and to the Entroncamento: E 163, Henschel 7021, 0-4-4-0T. villages of Praia das Macas and Azenhas do Mar on the west coast. In its heyday it also carried freight, notably wine from a winery at This line is similar in character to the Soller Tramway in Majorca, Banzeo to the station in Sintra. but much more attractive. It deserves the support of any By the 1970s, the closure of sections resulted in a line running from enthusiast visiting the Lisbon area. It runs through the centre of Banzeo village where there is a siding The Costa da Caparica is a very lengthy beach, on the south side of into a small depot and the adjacent winery. The line is now the Tagus river, open directly to the Atlantic and backed by sand operated by Sintra Council and, despite receiving some heavy dunes. The coastal area was initially developed in the 1960s with investment in its infrastructure about five years ago, operations some small resorts at the north end and a string of camping sites, still seem to be marginal. Only three return trips are made per day restaurants and car parks and access points going south. with a single tram and crew of two in the peak summer months only. The fare is only 3 Euro - excellent value. The Transpraia railway was built in 1962/3 as a means of transport along a 7 km section of beach from Praia Nova in the north to Praia There is a regular bus service along a roughly parallel route, doing da Fonte da Telha in the south. An attractive ferry journey from the journey in half the time and for half the fare. Stopping places have numbers rather than name boards.

The depot is a substantial building at Praia da Rainha about 2 km from the northern terminus. This was open and a mechanic was replacing the wheels on locomotive number 2. Wear and tear on the locos and rolling stock is obviously also an issue in this environment. There are four similar locomotives and three trains of four-wheeled carriages which all seem to date from the opening of the line. The locomotives and carriages have roofs to provide shade. No details could be found as to the builder of the locomotives which according to the mechanic have Mercedes engines.

It is understood that when the line is operating, the train fare is 8 Euro. Visit 20-27/06/19. The peak summer timetable provides thirteen return services, roughly hourly during the day, between Göhren and Binz Lokalbahnhof. Seven continue from Binz, roughly every two hours, to the line’s headquarters at Putbus, with five of these carrying on along the short section down to the harbour at Lauterbach Mole. The earliest departure is at 08.08 from Putbus, with the latest arrival the 23.27 at Göhren.

Three train sets are needed to operate the service, two based at Putbus and one at Göhren. Trains were generally nine bogie vehicles long, including an open carriage and a van for transporting 99 1784-0 (the number may be faintly visible where the plate has bicycles. been removed) and 99 4802-7 in Putbus shed yard. (23.06.19)

Over the course of the week four steam locomotives and one diesel were seen in operation: - 2-10-2T 99 1781-6, LKM Babelsberg 32022 of 1953. This was the loco out-stationed at Göhren for the first few days. - 2-10-2T 99 782 (99 1782-4), LKM Babelsberg 32023 of 1953.

99 4652 and 99 4632 in Putbus shed yard. (23.06.19)

251 901-5 heads P105, the 11.22 from Lauterbach Mole to Göhren, across Binzer Strasse into Putbus station. (23.06.19) At Binz station the booking office was not in use, with tickets and souvenirs sold from a container on platform 1. The terrace and garden of the station restaurant provide an excellent venue for watching the trains on a warm summer evening. Fares are zonal, with a full line single costing €11.00 and a weekly rover available for €33.00.

Strandbahn Göhren (metre gauge)

Visit 22/06/19. Göhren’s RüBB station is at sea level, whereas the community itself is about thirty metres higher. In 2014 a Doppelmayr Schrägaufzug - or inclined lift - was installed to provide easier access to the town. The line is about 100m long and is straight, though the gradient varies. It uses a single twelve passenger capacity cabin on round profile rail. The lower station is just beyond the multi-storey car park by Göhren station. The uphill fare is €1.00 but the refusal of the ticket machine to work made travel impossible on this occasion, even though the lift itself was in operation with passengers coming down on it. 99 4011-5 prepares to make an unwelcome stop at the request halt of Garftitz on the long climb from Sellin to Jagdschloss with train The similar installation by Sellin pier is 1,500mm gauge.

Strandbahn Göhren: With the upper station visible in the 99 4801-9 receiving attention in Binz LB while waiting for its 18.40 background, the cabin of the inclined lift negotiates the abrupt departure time with P111. (26.06.19) change of gradient leading into the lower station. (22.06.19)

Oldtimer Museum Rügen (900mm gauge) The museum also contains a 600mm gauge diesel which has been converted to standard gauge. Admission to the museum is €10.00. Visit 21/06/19. This is the current name for the Eisenbahn und Oldtimer Museum Rügen: Kreidebahn diesel 3 and one of the Technikmuseum at Prora, adjacent to DB’s Prora station. Among the wagons used for transporting unprocessed chalk, seen to the left of standard and broad gauge locomotives, cars and fire engines there the picture in the Oldtimer Museum at Prora. It is possible that the is one narrow gauge exhibit. skip in the foreground may be of narrower gauge than the 900mm of the main exhibits. The east coast of Rügen to the north of Sassnitz is celebrated for its chalk cliffs - and chalk is also extracted commercially. Kreidewerk Rügen operates a chalk processing plant at Klementelvitz, not far from DB’s Lancken station and clearly visible from trains approaching Sassnitz. The plant was once connected to the quarry at Wittenfelde by a 1.5km long 900mm gauge Kreidebahn or chalk railway. It closed in the early 1990s and a 2km long conveyor belt operates in its place today. V10c 0-6-0DM 3, LKM Babelsberg 250197 of 1960, is preserved in the museum along with one of the wagons used to transport the raw chalk and also a skip which was presumably used in the quarry. Trains consisted of a locomotive and seven wagons, able to transport a total of 35 cubic metres of chalk. The museum information board implies that 3 was one of fifteen similar locomotives. This section still uses aluminium rail. On shed were the lines own Royal Scot (S.Batteson 1953) and a LNER Atlantic 4433. The latter is from the Steam Workshop in Heckmondwike and was running here in May on the occasion of a Heywood Society visit along with a Great Central ‘Director’ 505 TebbettMike Simkins built locomotive. Royal Scot is steamed every Sunday with operations the rest of the week using gas i/c engines built by Severn-Lamb. On our visit this was Countess de Grey following a light engine run around the line this locomotive suffered a derailment as it ‘ran round’ its train splitting the turnout at the western end of the station loop. Some heavy lifting using a car jack, timber and some old rail then ensued. The long trailing branch line just before the eastern loop still exists also still in aluminium rail but seems disused with undergrowth much in evidence on the line. Noted was the surprising lack of continuous brakes on the rolling stock despite the fact that much of the line is of open access to the general public. Graham Lelliott Visit 22/06/19. The railway is currently closed, and partly lifted, whilst part of the park is remodelled as Tornado Springs, an American themed area which is expected to open in May 2020. While passing Sachseln on the Zentralbahn (ZB) a small outdoor play park was seen in the relatively small space between the railway and the Stansersee. A miniature railway track could be seen curving and presumably describing a small circle round the park - the back could not be seen due to various play items. It is beside the bathing area by the lake. No stock was seen. Later research online shows this is the 170m long Sumsi-Dampfbahn opened in with2015 one steam locomotive. This is a ¼ scale model of WB 6 was used at various exhibitions in the Alpnach area. There are at least 3 blue sit- astride coaches. Later the railway was given a battery locomotive with bodywork resembling a Luzern-Stans-Engelberg Bahn . Philip Champion line Private miniature Switzerland. 24/6 This dual gauge line was seen from the Zentralbahn on the left side of the line heading from Interlaken Ost to Luzern.
