He occupied this exalted spiritual station for seventeen years till his death, and as the Promised as Grandson of the Promised Messiah , he was a Sign of Allah Who bestowed on him His special Graces and Favours from the time of his birth to his death. With his piety, grace and qualities of head and heart and of leadership, his was a larger than life personality. Earlier on as an alumnus of Govt. College (Lahore), Balliol (Oxford), as founder member and Principle of T.I. College, as Head of Khudam and Ansar, as member of Academic Council and Senate of the Punjab University and as Patron of sports like Badminton, Basketball, Mountaineering, Rowing etc., he transformed and left his mark on whatever he touched. All the time the steel was being tempered as it were. Soon after his assuming the Supreme office, the storm broke. Religion was politicized in Pakistan and a reign of terror and persecution with government connivance and help was let loose against the innocent Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama‘at, by the frenzied zealots led by the mullahs. In the backdrop of murder, looting and arson, he enjoined upon his followers to remain peaceful and calm and leave the result to the real Savior—God. He gave the Jama‘at the historic slogan: 'Love for all, hatred for none.' Nusrat Jahan Scheme (Africa Leap Forward) is a standing monument to his deep love and concern for Africa in particular and for the poor, exploited, ignored and despised humanity in ra general. That like Hadrat Musleh Mau‘ud he, too, had tender sense of nostalgia and affection for Spain is symbolised by the foundation stone he laid of the first Ahmadiyya Muslim mosque there with such hope and longing! He wanted all to be righteous and charitable and to re-live Islam in its pristine purity, holding fast to sa the Holy Quran and the example of the Holy Prophet . The names of other Prophets and Messengers are followed by the symbol as, an abbreviation for ( / ) ‘Alaihissalam/ ‘Alaihimussalam (on whom be peace). The actual salutations have not generally been set out in full, but they should nevertheless, be understood as being repeated in full in each case. The symbol ra is used with the name of the Companions of the Holy Prophetsa and those of the Promised Messiahas. It stands for ( / / ) Radi Allahu ‘anhu/‘anha/‘anhum (May Allah be pleased with him/with her/with them). The symbol rh stands for ( ) Rahimahullahu Ta‘ala (may Allah’s blessing be on him). The symbol at stands for ( ) Ayyadahullahu Ta‘ala (May Allah, the Al-Mighty help him). In transliterating Arabic words we have followed the following system adopted by the Royal Asiatic Society. at the beginning of a word, pronounced as a, i, u preceded by a very slight aspiration, like h in the English word 'honour'. th, pronounced like th in the English word 'thing'. h, a guttural aspirate, stronger than h. kh, pronounced like the Scotch ch in 'loch'. x Twenty-three Great Objectives of Building the House of Allah dh, pronounced like the English th in 'that'. s, strongly articulated s. d, similar to the English th in 'this'. t, strongly articulated palatal t. z, strongly articulated z. ‘, a strong guttural, the pronunciation of which must be learnt by the ear. gh, a sound approached very nearly in the r 'grasseye' in French, and in the German r. It requires the muscles of the throat to be in the 'gargling' position whilst pronouncing it. q, a deep guttural k sound. ’, a sort of catch in the voice. Short vowels are represented by: a for (like u in 'bud'); i for (like i in 'bid'); u for (like oo in 'wood'); Long vowels by: a for or (like a in 'father'); ;('or (like ee in 'deep ى i for ;('like oo in 'root) و u for Other: ;♦('like i in 'site) ى ai for .('resembling ou in 'sound) و au for Please_______________________________ note that in transliterated words the letter 'e' is ♦ to beIn pronouncedArabic words aslike in 'prey' (Shaikh) which there rhymes is an element with 'day'; of howeverdiphthong the which pronunciation is missing when is flatthe wordwithout is pronounced the element in ofUrdu. English diphthong. If in Urdu and Persian words 'e' Twenty-three Great Objectives of Building the House of Allah xi is lengthened a bit more it is transliterated as 'ei' to be pronounced as 'ei' in 'feign' without the element of diphthong, thus ' ' is transliterated as 'Kei'. For the nasal sound of 'n' we have used the symbol 'ń'. Thus Urdu word ' ' is transliterated as 'meiń'.* The consonants not included in the above list have the same phonetic value as in the principal languages of Europe. We have not transliterated Arabic words which have become part of English language, e.g., Islam, Mahdi, Quran**, Hijra, Ramadan, Hadith, ulama, umma, sunna, kafir, pukka etc. For quotes straight commas (straight quotes) are used to differentiate them from the curved commas used in the system of transliteration, ‘ for , ’ for . Commas as punctuation marks are used according to the normal usage. Similarly for apostrophe normal usage is followed.     بسم هللا الرحمن الرحيم Surah Al-Anfal Tafsir – Nouman Ali Khan Lecture Notes Introduction and Verse 1 The introduction of this Surah is quite long but it is significant and very important to set the stage for what is about to follow. This is part of a series of surahs – Surah Anfal and Surah Taubah. This surah is related to the previous surah (Surah A’raf) in that they both talk about the ‘Sunnah of Allah’ (Sunnatillah). It talks about how Allah deals with similar Nations in the same way. It is mentioned in the Qur’an: [This is] the established way of Allah with those who passed on before; and you will not find in the way of Allah any change. [33:62] In the second half of Surah A’raf, Allah talks about the worldly destruction of nations and people that came before, specially the people of Musa and the destruction and drowning of Fir’awn and in Surah Anfal Allah will talk about the destruction of the people of Makkah (NOT the entire Arabian Peninsula). The Makkans here will be destroyed and defeated by the very swords of the believers – the army behind Rasulallah (s). It is not going to be fire from the skies, not a flood or an earthquake but the companions themselves. Part of the Sunnah of Allah is that punishments usually come down in two different forms: 1. Smaller punishments are sent as warnings before it is too late for example the nine signs of Musa(as) 2. Eventually the greater and major punishment is sent down for example the drowning of Fir’awn.
