Abstract: Sanskrit enjoys a place of pride among Indian languages in terms of technology solutions that are available for it within India and abroad. The Indian government through its various agencies has been heavily funding other Indian languages for technology development but the funding for Sanskrit has been slow for a variety of reasons. Despite that, the work in the field has not suffered. The following sections do a survey of the language technology R&D in Sanskrit and other Indian languages. The word `Sanskrit’ means “prepared, pure, refined or prefect”. It was not for nothing that it was called the `devavani’ (language of the Gods). It has an outstanding place in our culture and indeed was recognized as a language of rare sublimity by the whole world. Sanskrit was the language of our philosophers, our scientists, our mathematicians, our poets and playwrights, our grammarians, our jurists, etc. In grammar, Panini and Patanjali (authors of Ashtadhyayi and the Mahabhashya) have no equals in the world; in astronomy and mathematics the works of Aryabhatta, Brahmagupta and Bhaskar opened up new frontiers for mankind, as did the works of Charak and Sushrut in medicine. In philosophy Gautam (founder of the Nyaya system), Ashvaghosha (author of Buddha Charita), Kapila (founder of the Sankhya system), Shankaracharya, Brihaspati, etc., present the widest range of philosophical systems the world has ever seen, from deeply religious to strongly atheistic. -

بسم هللا الرحمن الرحيم Surah Al-Anfal Tafsir – Nouman Ali Khan Lecture Notes Introduction and Verse 1 The introduction of this Surah is quite long but it is significant and very important to set the stage for what is about to follow. This is part of a series of surahs – Surah Anfal and Surah Taubah. This surah is related to the previous surah (Surah A’raf) in that they both talk about the ‘Sunnah of Allah’ (Sunnatillah). It talks about how Allah deals with similar Nations in the same way. It is mentioned in the Qur’an: [This is] the established way of Allah with those who passed on before; and you will not find in the way of Allah any change. [33:62] In the second half of Surah A’raf, Allah talks about the worldly destruction of nations and people that came before, specially the people of Musa and the destruction and drowning of Fir’awn and in Surah Anfal Allah will talk about the destruction of the people of Makkah (NOT the entire Arabian Peninsula). The Makkans here will be destroyed and defeated by the very swords of the believers – the army behind Rasulallah (s). It is not going to be fire from the skies, not a flood or an earthquake but the companions themselves. Part of the Sunnah of Allah is that punishments usually come down in two different forms: 1. Smaller punishments are sent as warnings before it is too late for example the nine signs of Musa(as) 2. Eventually the greater and major punishment is sent down for example the drowning of Fir’awn. -

But, I am fortunate to have found friends, colleagues, and mentors who have inspired me to make this laborious task far from arduous. It was Frederick M. Asher, my advisor, who inspired me to turn to places where art historians do not usually venture. The temple city of Khajuraho is not just the exquisite 11th-century temples at the site. Rather, the 11th-century temples are part of a larger visuality that extends to contemporary civic monuments in the city center, Rick suggested in the first class that I took with him. I learnt to move across time and space. To understand modern Vrindavan, one would have to look at its Mughal past; to understand temple architecture, one would have to look for rebellions in the colonial archive. Catherine B. Asher gave me the gift of the Mughal world – a world that I only barely knew before I met her. Today, I speak of the Islamicate world of colonial Vrindavan. Cathy walked me through Mughal mosques, tombs, and gardens on many cold wintry days in Minneapolis and on a hot summer day in Sasaram, Bihar. The Islamicate Krishna in my dissertation thus came into being. -

HUZOOR’S TOUR OF GERMANY JUNE 2014 A Personal Account PART 2 By Abid Khan 1 Departure for Munich On 9th June 2014, Huzoor and his Qafila departed from the Baitus Sabuh Mosque in Frankfurt at 10.15am. We were travelling to Neufahrn a small town, known as a municipality, lying in the suburbs of Germany’s famous city of Munich. Huzoor was travelling to inaugurate the Al-Mahdi Mosque. Apart from Berlin, Munich is considered to be Germany’s most famous city internationally. It is home to the famous football team ‘Bayern Munich’ and also home to the renowned car maker BMW. The drive from Frankfurt took nearly 3 and a half hours and as we approached Neufahrn the Qafila cars were escorted by 2 police cars. One of the police cars was a ‘special forces’ car which travelled at the rear of the Qafila, whilst the other police car acted as the lead car. Apart from these 2 cars there were other police cars that had completely blocked traffic on certain roads so that Huzoor’s car could travel directly without any delay. As I saw this I felt a great deal of gratitude to the German authorities for welcoming Huzoor in such a positive way. 2 Arrival in Munich We arrived at the AlMahdi Mosque at 1.35pm where Huzoor was greeted by a local dignitary. The dignitary spoke very passionately as he welcomed Huzoor and said that he held a very deep respect for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. Huzoor thanked him for his courtesy and kindness. -

OBITUARY Bravo Raja Sahib (1923-2010) On Friday May 7th 2010 Raja Mumtaz Quli Khan passed away peacefully at his home in Lahore. Physically debilitated but mentally active and alert till his death. His death is most acutely felt by his family but poignantly experienced by all with whom he was associated as he was deeply admired by his students, patients, colleagues and friends. In him we have lost a giant in ophthalmology and the father of Ophthalmological Society of Pakistan. His sad demise marks the end of an era. It is difficult to adequately document and narrate the characteristics and qualities which made him such a dedicated teacher, organizer and most of all a great friend known as Raja Sahib to all of us. He was an inspiration to his colleagues, to his students and children of his students who ultimately became his students. Raja Sahib was born in a wealthy, land owning family in a remote village of Gadari near Jehlum on July 16th 1923. He went to a local school which was a few miles from his village and he used to walk to school as there were no roads in that area, although with his personal effort and influence he got a road built but many years after leaving school when he had become Raja Sahib. Did metric in 1938 and B.Sc. form F.C College Lahore in 1943 and joined Galancy Medical College Amritser (Pre- partition) and after creation of Pakistan joined K.E. Medical College Lahore. After completing his MBBS in 1948 from KEMC he did his house job with Prof. -

This is why, when Allah exhorts the believers to strive in His cause. He j •a.i. .. oarticularly to be the case in the Latter Days, this S®why^n?*Holy^Prophet, 'peace and blessings of Allah be on him said, when ^e promised Messiah comes, he will abolish physical fighting, in other wor^, l*ere would be no need of fighting physical battles for the propagation of course, "Jihad" there must be, and more intense and longer, but not with the bo y and the sworD, but with money and pen. The Promised Messiah, peace be on him, has come, and has declared war- with the forces of evil. To carry on this war he has demanded from his followers moneta^ contribution and not physical fighting. His Second Khalifa (Successor) regularizeD this contribution, and fixed it to be at least, l/16th of one's mon^ly income and further enunciated that one who does not contribute at this rate, without legitimate grounds, and securing permission to pay at a lesser rate, shall not be co^idere sincere and true Ahmadis. He further declared definitely that one who fails to pay, at this rate, without any reasonable excuse, for consecutive six months, shall not be entitled to vote or be eligible for any office of the Jamat (Comm^ity).
