The Titanic Origin of Humans: The Melian Nymphs and Zagreus Velvet Yates HE FIRST PART of this paper examines a minor mystery in Hesiod’s Theogony, centering around the Melian Nymphs, Tin order to assess the suggestions, both ancient and modern, that the Melian Nymphs were the mothers of the human race. The second part examines the afterlife of Hesiod’s Melian Nymphs over a thousand years later, in the allegorizing myths of late Neoplatonism, in order to suggest that the Hesiodic myth in which the Melian Nymphs primarily figure, namely the castration of Ouranos, has close similarities to a central Neoplatonic myth, that of Zagreus. Both myths depict a “Titanic” act of destruction and separation which leads to the birth of the human race. Both myths furthermore seek to account for a divine element which human nature retains from its origins. Wardlow presented the 2013 AAAE Distinguished Lecture at the Annual Meeting of the American Association for Agricultural Education in Columbus, Ohio in May, 2013. While the focus of the article is on the importance of research to the profession, it is intended as a philosophical work. There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown (American Bible Society, 1985, p. 6). Every culture from the beginning of human civilization has some reference to “giants” of old, or as Genesis refers to them, “men of renown.” The Bible refers to these individuals as Nephilim, a result of human genetic crosses with angels; and we accept the notion that this did not necessarily result in a positive outcome. In Greek mythology the giants who roamed the Earth were, according to the poet Hesiod, the children of Uranus and Gaea (spirits of the sky and the earth) (“Giants (Greek Mythology),” 2013). Indeed, references are made to “giants” among many cultures of the world. In Native American lore such as Paiute oral history, the Si-Te-Cah or Sai'i are a legendary tribe of red- haired cannibalistic giants (“Giants (Mythology),” 2013). In Norse mythology existed the Jotun, or jötnar in Old Norse (“Jotunn,” 2013). Megalithic construction in South America among Inca and even Aztec legend is, at times, attributed to ancient giants. -

chapter 6 Major Themes and Motifs in the Dionysiaca Fotini Hadjittofi A feature which will immediately strike the first-time reader of Nonnus’ Dionysiaca is the poet’s penchant for creating formulaic scenes or expressions: verses can be repeated verbatim or in a slightly varied form, and passages can be recast several times, with different protagonists and only minor alterations.1 These recurrent scenes and expressions are certainly a manifestation of Nonnus’ aesthetic principle of ποικιλία (variatio),2 and have an obvious role to play in structuring the poem. For example, in looking for unifying threads that would tie together the disparate episodes of the Dionysiaca, scholars have identified a set of close structural parallels between the first and last books of the epic.3 Thus, the narrative proper begins with a rape (of Europa, by Zeus) and ends with a rape (of Aura, by Dionysus). The Typhonomachy, in which Zeus defeats Typhoeus, in Books 1–2 corresponds to the Gigantomachy, in which Dionysus defeats the Giants of Thrace, in Book 48. The tragic narratives of Actaeon (Book 5) and Pentheus (Books 44–46) clearly echo each other. Even though this chapter will often focus on the thematic correspondences between the first and last books (as themes which appear in these narratively privileged positions are likely to be fundamental for the whole poem), it does not aim to explore structural questions, such as how far we can push these particular similarities and to what extent Nonnus was indeed striving for a perfect ring composition.4 My aim is to provide an outline of the most important themes and motifs which recur throughout the entire epic, and which will be studied 1 The formularity of Nonnus’ language will not concern me in this chapter, but see D’Ippolito in this volume. -

The Mausoleion at Halikarnassos Greek, ca. 360-340 B.C. Myth: The Amazons lived in the northern limits of the known world. They were warrior women who fought from horseback usually with bow and arrows, but also with axe and spear. Their shields were crescent shaped. They destroyed the right breast of young Amazons, to facilitate use of the bow. The Attic hero Theseus had joined Herakles on his expedition against them and received the Amazon Antiope (or Hippolyta) as his share of the spoils of war. In revenge, the Amazons invaded Attica. In the subsequent battle Antiope was killed. This battle was represented in a number of works, notably the metopes of the Parthenon and the shield of the Athena Parthenos, the great cult statue by Pheidias that stood in the Parthenon. Symbolically, the battle represents the triumph of civilization over barbarism. Battle of the Gods and Giants Altar of Zeus and Athena, Pergamon (Zeus battling Giants) Greek, ca. 180 B.C. Myth: The giants, born of Earth, threatened Zeus and the other gods, and a fierce struggle ensued, the so-called Gigantomachy, or battle of the gods and giants. The giants were defeated and imprisoned below the earth. This section of the frieze from the altar shows Zeus battling three giants. The myth may reflect an event of prehistory, the arrival ca. 2000 B.C. of Greek- speaking invaders, who brought with them their own gods, whose chief god was Zeus. -

Constellation Legends by Norm McCarter Naturalist and Astronomy Intern SCICON Andromeda – The Chained Lady Cassiopeia, Andromeda’s mother, boasted that she was the most beautiful woman in the world, even more beautiful than the gods. Poseidon, the brother of Zeus and the god of the seas, took great offense at this statement, for he had created the most beautiful beings ever in the form of his sea nymphs. In his anger, he created a great sea monster, Cetus (pictured as a whale) to ravage the seas and sea coast. Since Cassiopeia would not recant her claim of beauty, it was decreed that she must sacrifice her only daughter, the beautiful Andromeda, to this sea monster. So Andromeda was chained to a large rock projecting out into the sea and was left there to await the arrival of the great sea monster Cetus. As Cetus approached Andromeda, Perseus arrived (some say on the winged sandals given to him by Hermes). He had just killed the gorgon Medusa and was carrying her severed head in a special bag. When Perseus saw the beautiful maiden in distress, like a true champion he went to her aid. Facing the terrible sea monster, he drew the head of Medusa from the bag and held it so that the sea monster would see it. Immediately, the sea monster turned to stone. Perseus then freed the beautiful Andromeda and, claiming her as his bride, took her home with him as his queen to rule. Aquarius – The Water Bearer The name most often associated with the constellation Aquarius is that of Ganymede, son of Tros, King of Troy. -

�������������������������������������� Athena Parthenos in Nashville and Athens The Parthenon on the acropolis in Athens was an architectural and sculptural masterpiece, with soaring columns, a spacious cella, figured metopes, friezes and pedimental sculptures. Unfortunately, what remains on the acropolis now, after the passage of over 2400 years (with consequent erosion and pollution damage), conversion to a church, a mosque and, most disastrously, an ammunition dump, and dispersion of much of the art to world museums, is a pale image of what once was. The only positive gain as a result of the deterioration of the marble (mainly from the rusting of iron reinforcing rods) is that archaeologists working on restorations have had to take the temple apart block by block and have often discovered new facts about the building - e.g., evidence for some windows, a stairway inside to the second level, a small shrine in one of the colonnades. One of the striking features of the temple was the huge (40 foot plus 2 foot base) statue of Athena Parthenos in the cella, the height of which space was made possible by imposing a second row of Doric columns above a ground-level Pi-shaped row. The second level was needed to reach that height because single Doric columns that tall (because of the height to diameter relation of a Doric column) would have made bases so big there would have been no room left in cella for people. For those who cannot get to Athens or who want to see what the Parthenon building and the Athena statue would have looked like in 5th century BC, an option now exists: the Parthenon reconstructed in Nashville. -
