Food Selection by Northern Yellow-cheeked Crested Gibbons (Nomascus annamensis)in Northern Cambodia Naven Hon A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Ecology and Biodiversity School of Biological Sciences Victoria University of Wellington New Zealand 2016 i Abstract Tropical regions have extremely high plant diversity, which in turn supports a high diversity of animals. However, not all plant species are selected by animals as food sources, with some herbivores selecting only specific plants as food as not all plants have the same nutrient make up. Animals must select which food items to include in their diets, as the amount and type of nutrients in their diet can affect lifespan, health, fitness, and reproduction. Gibbon populations have declined significantly in recent years due to habitat destruction and hunting. Northern yellow-cheeked crested gibbon (Nomascus annamensis) is a newly described species, and has a limited distribution restricted to Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. The northern yellow-cheeked crested gibbons play an important role in seed dispersal, yet little is currently known about this species, including its food selection and nutritional needs. However, data on food selection and nutritional composition of selected food items would greatly inform the conservation of both wild and captive populations of this species. This study aims to quantify food selection by the northern yellow-cheeked crested gibbons by investigating the main plant species consumed and the influence of the availability of food items on their selection. The study also explores the nutritional composition of food items consumed by this gibbon species and identifying key plant species that provide these significant nutrients. -

Flowers in axillary thyrses, small, usually globose. Calyx slightly or deeply 3– 5-lobed. Petals 3–5, short, concave, quincuncial or imbricate in bud, distinct or rarely basally connate and adnate to staminal tube. Stamens as many as or more than petals; staminal tube usually subglobose, obovoid, or cup-shaped with apex incurved, apical margin entire, crenate, or shallowly lobed; anthers 5 or 6(–12), included, slightly exserted, or rarely semiexserted. Disk absent. Ovary 1–3(or 4)-locular, with 1 or 2 ovules per locule; style short or absent; stigma ovoid or shortly cylindric. Fruit with fibrous pericarp, indehiscent with 1 or 2 locules or loculicidally dehiscent with 3 locules; locules without seeds or each containing 1 seed; pericarp often containing latex. Seeds usually surrounded by a colloidal and fleshy aril; endosperm absent. About 120 species: tropical and subtropical Asia, tropical Australia, Pacific islands; eight species in China. Aglaia is the only source of the group of about 50 known representatives of compounds that bear a unique cyclopenta[b]tetrahydrobenzofuran skeleton. These compounds are more commonly called rocaglate or rocaglamide derivatives, or flavaglines, and have been found to have anticancer and pesticidal properties. Received: 4 July 2014; Accepted: 12 November 2014 Abstract The leaves from Aglaia andamanica were determined for their anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory effects using RBL- 2H3 and RAW264.7 cells, respectively. Among the isolated compounds, 24-epi-piscidinol A (5) exhibited the highest anti- allergic activity against -hexosaminidase release with an IC50 value of 19.8 M, followed by (-)-yangambin (3, IC50 = 33.8 M), pyramidaglain A (8, IC50 = 37.1 M), pachypodol (2, IC50 = 38.3 M) and pyramidaglain B (9, IC50 = 44.8 M), respec- tively; whereas other compounds possessed moderate to mild effects (IC50 = 67.5->100 M). For anti-inflammatory activity, 24-epi-piscidinol A (5) possessed potent activity with an IC50 value of 24.0 M, followed by pyramidaglain B (9, IC50 = 25.6 M), pachypodol (2, IC50 = 34.5 M) and (-)-yangambin (3, IC50 = 37.4 M), respectively; whereas other compounds exhibited moderate to mild activities (IC50 = 54.2->100 M). The cul tivated fruit trees number more than 100 species of both indigenous and introduced species. Among these fruits, some are popular and are widely cultivated throughout the country while others are less known and grown in small localized areas. The latter are the under-utilized fruit species. Apart from these cultivated fruits, there is also in the Malaysian natural forest a diversity of wild fruit tree species which produce edible fruits but are relatively unknown and unutilized. Many of the under-utilized and unutilized fruit species are known to show economic potential. Collection and evaluation of some of these fruit tree genetic resources have been carried out. These materials are assessed for their potential as new fruit trees, as sources of rootstocks for grafting and also as sources of germplasm for breeding to improve the present cultivated fruit species. Some of these potential fruit tree species within the gen era Artocarpus, Baccaurea, Canarium, Dimocarpus, Dialium, Durio, Garcinia, Litsea, Mangif era, Nephelium, Sa/acca, and Syzygium are highlighted. Introduction Malaysian fruit tree genetic resources comprise both cultivated and wild species. There are more than 100 cultivated fruit species of both major and minor fruit crops. Each category includes indigenous as well as introduced species. The major cultivated fruit crops are well known and are commonly grown throughout the country. -

Journal of Aquaculture & Marine Biology Research Article Open Access Species composition and zonal distribution of mangrove plants in the Myeik coastal areas of Myanmar Abstract Volume 9 Issue 2 - 2020 The species composition and zonal distribution of mangroves in five research sites viz., Tin-Zar-Ni-Win,1 U Soe-Win2 Kapa, Masanpa, Panadoung, Kywe Ka Yan and Kyauk Phyar from Myeik coastal areas 1Marine Biologist, Fauna & Flora International (FFI), Myanmar were studied from December 2017 to July 2018. Transect lines in landward, seaward 2Department of Marine Science, Mawlamyine University, and shoreline, and plots based on Point Center Quarter Method (PCQM) were used. Myanmar A total of 21 species of true mangrove were recorded. Rhizophora apiculata and R. The environmental parameters of mangrove forests were also provided in all study sites. The various salinity and temperature ranges of seawater (25.0-30.0‰ and 28.0-32.0ºC) and soil (25.0-33.0‰ and 27.6-31.4ºC) significantly controlled the distribution of mangrove species of mangroves. -

The study aimed to document plant diversity and to identify interesting, endemic, rare and threatened plant species which were considered high conservation value species. A total of 413 species from 82 families were recorded from the study area of which 93 taxa were endemic to Borneo, including 10 endemic to Sabah. These high conservation value species are key conservation targets for any forested area such as ICCA. Proper knowledge of plant diversity and their conservation status is vital for the formulation of a forest management plan for the Batu Timbang area. Ozturk2 1Faculty of Forestry, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Serdang-43400, Selangor, Malaysia 2Botany Department, Ege University, Bornova, Izmir, Turkey Abstract This study was conducted to determine the floral diversity and biomass in a coastal heath forest at Rantau Abang, Terengganu, Malaysia. The plot included contiguously arranged 100 subplots (10 m x 10 m). Results showed that 959 trees of 63 species belonging to 52 genera and 30 families are distributed in this coastal forest. Myrtaceae is the largest family (163 trees) followed by Annonaceae (160 trees) and Lecythidaceae (100 trees). Euphorbiaceae is the most diverse family containing 6 genera and 6 species. Syzygium claviflorum var. claviflorum (15.5%) was the dominant species followed by Polyalthia hypogaea (12.7%) and Barringtonia macrostachya (10.4%). Dipterocarpaceae has a small stocking as compared to the non-dipterocarp families in this forest. This family comprised about 9% of tree density and 6% of tree species diversity. The dominant species from Dipterocarpaceae is Shorea materialis. The total biomass in the forest lies around 249 ton/ha. The largest contribution to the biomass comes from Dipterocarpaceae with 86 ton/ha (34.5%) followed by Myrtaceae 75.3 ton/ha (30.2%). The biomass contribution of Shorea materialis is78.8 ton/ha, followed by Syzygium claviflorum 67.8 ton/ha. -

The plant is used in different parts of the world for the treatment of several ailments like diarrhea, fever, dysentery, candidacies, scabies, baby rash, stomach pains, and constipation joint pains, chest pains, and relapsing sickness etc., Xylocarpus moluccensis is the source of a diverse kind of chemical constituents such as swietemahonolide, febrifugin, khayasin T, febrifugin A, gedunin, isolariciresinol, phaseic acid, aromadendrin, 4-hydroxy cinnamic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, 4-hydroxyphenylaceticacid, and xylogranatinin. The isolated phytochemicals as well as different extracts exhibited significant biological activities such as antibacterial, anti diabetic, antioxidant activity, antifilarial, anti diarrheal, CNS depressant and cytotoxic activities. Exhaustive research regarding isolation of more phytochemicals and pharmacology study on this medicinal plant is still necessary so as to explore the plant regarding its medicinal importance. Therefore, the aim of this review is to boost up present day researchers in this direction to undertake further investigations of this plant.
