However, not all plant species are selected by animals as food sources, with some herbivores selecting only specific plants as food as not all plants have the same nutrient make up. Animals must select which food items to include in their diets, as the amount and type of nutrients in their diet can affect lifespan, health, fitness, and reproduction. Gibbon populations have declined significantly in recent years due to habitat destruction and hunting. Northern yellow-cheeked crested gibbon (Nomascus annamensis) is a newly described species, and has a limited distribution restricted to Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. The northern yellow-cheeked crested gibbons play an important role in seed dispersal, yet little is currently known about this species, including its food selection and nutritional needs. However, data on food selection and nutritional composition of selected food items would greatly inform the conservation of both wild and captive populations of this species. This study aims to quantify food selection by the northern yellow-cheeked crested gibbons by investigating the main plant species consumed and the influence of the availability of food items on their selection. The study also explores the nutritional composition of food items consumed by this gibbon species and identifying key plant species that provide these significant nutrients. -

Received: 4 July 2014; Accepted: 12 November 2014 Abstract The leaves from Aglaia andamanica were determined for their anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory effects using RBL- 2H3 and RAW264.7 cells, respectively. Among the isolated compounds, 24-epi-piscidinol A (5) exhibited the highest anti- allergic activity against -hexosaminidase release with an IC50 value of 19.8 M, followed by (-)-yangambin (3, IC50 = 33.8 M), pyramidaglain A (8, IC50 = 37.1 M), pachypodol (2, IC50 = 38.3 M) and pyramidaglain B (9, IC50 = 44.8 M), respec- tively; whereas other compounds possessed moderate to mild effects (IC50 = 67.5->100 M). For anti-inflammatory activity, 24-epi-piscidinol A (5) possessed potent activity with an IC50 value of 24.0 M, followed by pyramidaglain B (9, IC50 = 25.6 M), pachypodol (2, IC50 = 34.5 M) and (-)-yangambin (3, IC50 = 37.4 M), respectively; whereas other compounds exhibited moderate to mild activities (IC50 = 54.2->100 M). Burdette1* Abstract Background: Silvestrol is a cyclopenta[b]benzofuran that was isolated from the fruits and twigs of Aglaia foveolata, a plant indigenous to Borneo in Southeast Asia. The purpose of the current study was to determine if inhibition of protein synthesis caused by silvestrol triggers autophagy and apoptosis in cultured human cancer cells derived from solid tumors. Methods: In vitro cell viability, flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, qPCR and immunoblot was used to study the mechanism of action of silvestrol in MDA-MB-435 melanoma cells. Results: By 24 h, a decrease in cyclin B and cyclin D expression was observed in silvestrol-treated cells relative to control. In addition, silvestrol blocked progression through the cell cycle at the G2-phase. In silvestrol-treated cells, DAPI staining of nuclear chromatin displayed nucleosomal fragments. Annexin V staining demonstrated an increase in apoptotic cells after silvestrol treatment. Silvestrol induced caspase-3 activation and apoptotic cell death in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, both silvestrol and SAHA enhanced autophagosome formation in MDA-MB-435 cells. MDA-MB-435 cells responded to silvestrol treatment with accumulation of LC3-II and time-dependent p62 degradation. Bafilomycin A, an autophagy inhibitor, resulted in the accumulation of LC3 in cells treated with silvestrol. Silvestrol-mediated cell death was attenuated in ATG7-null mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) lacking a functional autophagy protein. -

A total of 413 species from 82 families were recorded from the study area of which 93 taxa were endemic to Borneo, including 10 endemic to Sabah. These high conservation value species are key conservation targets for any forested area such as ICCA. Proper knowledge of plant diversity and their conservation status is vital for the formulation of a forest management plan for the Batu Timbang area. Two species of Meliaceae, Toona calcicola and Reinwardtiodendron humile are newly added for fl ora of Thailand. Toona calcicola, a new species from Suan Hin Pha Ngam Forest Park, Loei Province, is described and illustrated. This species is endemic to ridge of limestone hill and characterized by Cycas petraea A.Lindstr. & K.D.Hill and Dracaena cambodiana Pierre ex Gagnep. Since this is the fi rst account of the genus Reinwardtiodendron to the fl ora of Thailand, the key to the genera of Meliaceae (based on fl owers) in Thailand is revised. No information is available regarding the genetic structure of mahogany in South America, yet the region harbours most of the unlogged populations of this prized hardwood. Here we report on the genetic diversity within and the differentiation among seven natural populations separated by up to 2100 km along the southern arc of the Brazilian Amazon basin. We analysed the variation at eight microsatellite loci for 194 adult individuals. All loci were highly variable, with the number of alleles per locus ranging from 13 to 27 (mean = 18.4). High levels of genetic diversity were found for all populations at the eight loci (mean ffE = 0.781, range 0.754-0.812). We found moderate but statistically significant genetic differentiation among populations considering both estimators of FST and RST, 9 = 0.097 and p = 0.147, respectively. -

We recorded 23 individuals in three groups. Group size ranged from four to 12 (mean 7.7±4.0) individuals; all groups contained a single adult male, 1–4 females and 2–7 immature individuals (subadults, juveniles and infants). Habitat encroachment for expansion of lemon orchards by the Tipra ethnic community and habitat degradation due to logging and firewood collection are the main threats to the primates. Road mortality, electrocution and tourist activities were additional causes of stress and mortality. Participatory work and awareness programmes with the Tipra community or generation of alternative income sources may reduce the dependency of local people on forest resources. Strict implementation of the rules and regulations of the Bangladesh Wildlife (Security and Conservation) Act 2012 can limit habitat encroachment and illegal logging, which should help in the conservation of this species.
