February 2021

The COVID 19 virus continues to impede normal life and based on utilization of the club by members it has impeded food and beverage sales. January is traditionally a slow month at the club, but this January has been especially slow. Additionally, funds derived from holiday parties just didn’t materialize in December. My hope is that February is a turn-around month for all of us. As mentioned in previous publications, the club was not eligible for any governmental assistance. The management staff has looked for ways to keep all of you engaged and keep our front-line staff employed. This has been a challenge, but we are surviving. The pool complex project continues to progress. We are expecting the pool renovation company to be onsite sometime this month to install the new gutter system that will provide water to and from the new filtration system being installed in the pool house. Based on new technology we can dispose of the large chlorine tanks. This will improve the quality of the pool water and improve the esthetics, by not having the large unsightly tanks next to the pool house. Additionally, the construction crew will concentrate on the inside of the pool house now that the exterior walls are set along with the new roof. February 9th at 6 p.m. is the annual stockholders meeting. If you are not able to attend the meeting in person, please turn in your proxy as soon as possible. We cannot conduct business at the annual meeting without the majority of member owners participating either in person or via proxy vote. In closing, we continue to look for ways to improve the club. The staff has been busy reorganizing and updating the clubhouse. We look forward to serving you as best we can. As February starts, we will be starting our drainage work. This year we will be draining the areas on 8 fairway that constantly hold water. 8 fairway is probably our wettest fairway due to the amount of water it takes during storms. Most of the water from that area of river road ends up on the 8th hole. We will not be installing drain basins for this project. We will be doing what is called a closed system. What that means is there will be no drain caps in the fairway. All the drainage work will be under the surface. The reason for this is once the water starts moving thru the pipes that we put in it will create suction. Instead of draining the water just off the surface the suction pulls water thru the entire soil profile draining a much bigger area. We should also be starting our tree work this month. The goal this year is to take care of any trees that are in serious decline in high traffic areas. Mostly areas around tees and cart paths. The areas that we will be addressing are around the putting green, 11 tee, 18 tee, 11 green, and 15 tees. We have also begun to fill in the two fairway bunkers on 18 fairway by sissy ridge. They had declined to a point where there was no real option other then get rid of them or rebuild them. I spoke to Chris Hurdzan about removing them and he agreed. With the slight mounding that will be made to make the area look right it will still be penal if the fairway is missed.

2020 was a rough year all the way around for most every realm of business worldwide. One of the exceptions to this was Golf. Early on in the pandemic, the world was looking for a safe social activity that would allow for some (safe) fresh air while also fulfilling our need for interaction and entertainment. Enter our great game of Golf. It is not a secret that the game of golf has struggled since 2004 as the industry attempted to retain existing players as well as introduce new players to the sport. 2020 was a banner year for golf as new players came to the game for the reasons listed above. As a private club, Parkersburg Country Club did not see this influx of new blood into our facility. Most new golfers sought out driving ranges and public facilities to learn about and experience this great game.

My goal for 2021 is to grow our number of core golfers within our existing membership. We are all living with the realities of COVID now and will continue to deal with this pandemic through the summer months. Golf is the outlet that will give you the social interaction, athletic challenge, and safe environment that a lot of people are looking for. Below are a few of the programs we will be implementing in 2021 with the underlying goal of getting as many PCC members playing golf as we can.

Adam and I are always available and here for you, so please take advantage of our knowledge and professionalism to help you in the discovery of the lifelong journey golf has to offer.

PGA Junior League – Available for junior golfers (8 – 14) from beginner to advanced. Think of PGA Junior League as the Little League Baseball of golf. This is a great way for young players to experience golf in a team atmosphere while learning about the game of golf and more importantly the core values that go along with it. Sign ups will begin in early March and the program will run from early spring through the summer. We will have practices on Friday afternoons and on course scrimmages and matches on Saturday afternoons. Keep an eye out for more communication in late February for more details.

Tuesday Night Couples League – Don’t let me scare our new golfers off with the term ‘League’ as this attempt to find some new golfers will be very low stress and geared towards instruction and enjoyment. We are working through the details right now which could include childcare while you are on the course as well as fun ways to learn about and enjoy this great game. We need your feedback and recruiting to make this work so please let Adam and I know if you have any input to help grow this endeavor.

Sunday Night Family League – What better way to share your love for the game than to get your entire Family Unit out to enjoy it together. Again, we are working through the structure of this program but we envision having player friendly tees for all ages and abilities to go along with on course instruction. I can’t think of a better way to end the week than to spend it on the golf course with the people that mean the most to you.

Customized Golf Clinics – Adam and I are ready to assist you in whatever needs you have to get comfortable with the game of golf. It is our experience that an individual starting at golf is less likely to succeed without a couple of friends. Get your core group together and let us get you Golf Ready. We will work around your groups schedule and help you all attain whatever it is you want out of the game. These goals could range from just making contact, to not embarrassing yourself, to shooting a particular score or even just trying to understand why everyone else enjoys it so much. Compared to the players we watch on TV, we are all terrible, but there is a reason that millions and millions of people continue to enjoy this game. Here we are in 2021 and it is looking better already. Did you come for the Bloody Mary Breakfast? It was sold out, the biggest member event I've seen yet! Do not fret if you missed it, you will have your chance two more times this month as we will have a Valentines brunch and another member breakfast on the 27th. Speaking of Valentines Day, if you prefer a more romantic setting in the evening, Kenny has several incredible options for dinner on the 13th. Did you join in for our online BINGO? We all laughed so hard, and Dexter bought everyone who played a drink (no, we didn't forget about that Mr. Hughes!). Please check our facebook page and other member news for details.

Are you still hunkering down until the coast clears? I understand. There are many members I have not met yet since I came on during a pandemic but please take advantage of the club in the numerous other ways. You can get our food and beverage offerings for carry out or we can deliver it to you. If you need some social interaction, we have some virtual parties planned for Thursday nights and Saturday afternoons. We are not going to take ourselves too seriously for our Thursday night affairs, it will be trivia, scavenger hunts, more bingo and hilarity. Saturdays we have a line-up of yoga, golf tips, culinary techniques and DIY spa treatments. Please keep a look out for the upcoming schedule. If we see that some of these events are more popular than others, we will continue them online until we can all feel comfortable doing them together here at the club. Our first Saturday zoom event will be February 6th at 1pm with Yoga and smoothies. If you feel like you will find your balance easier with a bottle of champagne, we can help you with that too! Please pre-register well in advance as we will need to get our ducks in a row to give you the best experience.

I have heard many great stories of amazing parties, theme nights, wine dinners, etc. Our team wants to bring these back as soon as we get the okay from the powers that be. While I do love the snow it certainly limits our ability to use our spacious grounds. Spring is right around the corner and our team is thinking up creative ways to get outside and have some fun. Do you have a great idea for a member event? Let us know and we will see how we can accommodate or get it on the books for later in the year when the restrictions let up. I am pretty easy to find and want to hear what you want from your country club.

CHEF KENNY FROM THE KITCHEN

It’s hard to believe we are already through the first month of 2021. We were able to do a Bloody Mary breakfast in the month of January that had about 50 members attend. We are continuing to try and be creative with ways to have more member events. A couple of those are going to be a Valentine’s dinner, and a Valentines Day Brunch. Please make reservations for these events and allow us to make this day special for you and your significant other or families. Due to the decrease in volume during the winter months I limited our menu. I am currently looking at the menu and planning on increasing the options for the spring. My plan is to have this menu completed and rolled out by the end of March. I appreciate the membership understanding the menu being smaller. If there is something you would like to have during this time please let us know. We will do our very best to make it happen through a feature of the week. For the month of February I would like to include our recipe for our chocolate cake icing. The chocolate cake has been a consistent option here at the club, and I hear how good the icing is. So, I would like to share the recipe with the membership. Chocolate cake icing ¾ cup melted butter 1 cup baking cocoa 4 cups powdered sugar ½ cup evaporated milk 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract Combine melted butter, cocoa, and vanilla into mixing bowl and mix thoroughly. Slowly add powdered sugar and alternate evaporated milk until all ingredients are added. Continue to mix thoroughly until icing forms and will spread easily. We are all truly ready for things to get back to normal. We miss the days of a full bar of members to feed, and banquets to take care of. EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT Pat Maher, Greens Superintendent

My name is Patrick Maher, I have been the golf course superintendent at Parkersburg Country Club since March of 2015. My time on golf courses began when I was 14. Myself and some of my friends all got jobs together working in a Greens department in southern New Jersey. It was a great summer job and as the years went on I tried my hand at a few different jobs, but didn’t really enjoy them and always ended up back at the course. The superintendent had always pushed me to go to school for turf management, and in 2008 I went to Rutgers University. One of the requirements for school was an internship. That is how I ended up working at a club just outside of Philadelphia. Once again, I was working with people that I enjoyed being around and I enjoyed the work. When my internship ended I was offered a fulltime job there as an assistant in training. I worked there for the next six years and got to host some large tournaments, and travel all over the country to help at other tournaments. It was a great place to work. In 2015 it was my turn to leave. That is when I found myself interviewing at Parkersburg Country Club. When I came to interview here the course was covered in snow and water. Even though it was freezing, and we could not see anything with snow covering everything, the head pro spent the whole day driving around with me talking to me about the property. That day I found out that he cannot drive in the snow and I had to continually push him out from getting stuck, but it was fun. The GM invited me to dinner and the next day I interviewed with the board. Everyone I had met was friendly and made me feel comfortable. I have always thought that working with people you enjoy is one of the most important things. I am now in my sixth year at Parkesburg Country Club and it has been great. We have tackled a good number of projects over the past few years and have been able to improve the playability of the course every year. We are far from what we can be, but we are moving in the right direction. When I’m not working I enjoy traveling, fishing, and catching up with friends.

Checks You can mail in your check to the Country Club or drop payment off in the office. After hours there will be a payment box on the desk. We suggest you mail well in advance to avoid delays and late fees.

Credit Cards/Debit Cards at the Club You can pay by credit or debit card at the club or by phoning in. There is a 3% surcharge on this method.

Credit Cards/Debit/ACH by way of our website You can sign up through our website with Merchant Services to pay by credit, debit, or ACH to pay your bill. There will be a 3% surcharge on this method of payment.

Bank Checks Bank checks are when members instruct their banks to pull funds out of their accounts to complete payments. Members usually inform their banks on when funds should be pulled out of their accounts, by setting a schedule through them. A check is then issued and mailed to the Club. Be mindful that this process can take some time and you will want to schedule so it reaches the Club by the end of the month.
