INTRODUCTION Annandale (1911) in his volume in the Fauna of British India series on Freshwater Sponges, Hydroids and Polyzoa described 35 species, subspecies and varieties under seven genera of Spongillidae from what Was then the British India and from yeylon (now Sri Lanka) and Burma. He also recog nised three subgenera under the genus Spongilla. Later on (up to 1919) he described a few more species. After Annandale very little work has been done on Indian Spongillidae. Penney and Racek (1968), while making a revision of the freshwater sponges of the world, synonymised many Indian species, subspecies and varieties reported/described by Annandale. This checklist is based on the present status of the different taxa. This tentative list has been prepared to consolidate our knowledge of the freshwater sponges within Indian political boundaries and also with the idea that this may serve as a prelude to a revised volume in the Fauna of India series. It may, however, be stated that many areas of the country have yet to be surveyed for their spongillid fauna. -

Gemmule formation allows the sponge to overcome critical environmental conditions, for example, desiccation or freezing, and to re-establish as a fully developed sponge when conditions are more favorable. A key process in sponge development from hatched gemmules is the construction of the silica skeleton. The canal is a tide fed canal subjected to the brackish water Fisheries Research Institute, influence as it is connected to the Hooghly River. A mass of freshwater sponge was found growing on Barrackpore, Kolkata, West submerged nylon net screen and bamboo poles structure, these structure were constructed for fish culture Bengal, India in the canal. Sponge specimens were carefully scraped out using a clean flat blade with the help of 'scalpel' and preserved it in 70% ethanol. Sponge samples were undergone an acid digestion process to Mitesh H Ramteke obtain clean spicules. The spicules sample were examined under a compound light microscope for Scientist, ICAR-Central Inland species-level identification. The sponge specimen was identified as Ephydatia fluviatilis Linnaeus, 1759 Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Kolkata, West based on gemmule spicule morphology. Received 16 May, 2015; Accepted 22 October, 2015 The influence of the four species of green sponges (Ephydatia muelleri, Heteromeyenia stepanowii, Spongilla fluviatilis, and Spongilla lacustris) on the occurrence of aquatic mycotal species in the water of three four water bodies of different trophy was investigated in this study. Seeds and snake exuviae were used as baits. For the measurement of the primary and extracellular production by symbiotic algae of green sponges and assimilation of those products by mycota, radioactive carbon (14C) was used. A total of 75 mycotal species were found to be growing on the baits. The fewest mycota were noted in the containers in water from oligotrophic Lake Hańcza; the most in the containers with eutrophic water from River Supraśl. More mycota were found to grow in the containers with green sponges (Sp) than in the controls (Co) in water from all water bodies. The mean ratio of Sp/Co in green sponges ranged from 2.30 (E. muelleri) to 4.80 (H. stepanowii); in brown colonies (without symbiotic algae) it was 0.90. Mean value of 14C fixation (primary production) in symbiotic algae of Spogilla fluviatilis was 5.67 mg C g-1 dry weight sponge per hour. -

Evidence of Freshwater Sponges (Porifera: Spongillidae) in the Upper Volga River (Russia)

These species have three different zoogeographical distributions, namely, cosmopolitan, holarctic and holarctic-amphiatlantic. In the paper illustrations for determination of sponge spicule are given and the possibility to use the biogenic opal from the spicules for paleotemperature reconstructions is discussed. 1. Introduction: Considering evolution, sponges (Parazoa) are the most primal group of the Metazoa, therefore sponges were used as model organisms for several approaches in developmental biology (WEISSENFELS 1989, VOS et al. 1991). Most of the freshwater sponges of the world belong to the family Spongillidae (Porifera, Demospongia) (ADDIS & PETERSON 2005). They appear in stagnant as well as in running water bodies, usually in waters with little or no particulate matter, which would affect on the pores and close channels. Sponges are active filter feeders on plankton, bacteria and dissolved organic matter, due to this they play a specific role for water-purification. The filter capacity of Spongilla lacustris amounts about 6ml h-1 mg-1 dry mass (FROST 1980), thus a finger sized sponge can filter over 125 liters of water within 24 h (FROST 1991).
