A Firm Foundation Janet Peterson 12 Young Women of Zion: An Organizational History The Young Women program of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has grown from the desires of young women to im- prove themselves, develop their talents, serve others, and strengthen their testimonies of Jesus Christ. Tie iT All togeTher WiTh lOve!” Our idea is that on a monthly rotation, each Young Women Value theme be represented at weekly activities in a cycle of: Week 1- Fun Activities “Experience precedes learning” and the goal is to create a base of learning in a fun atmosphere that will be built upon over the next 4 weeks. These experiences will be talked about during week 4 when everything is tied together in a “nice neat bow”. This is a good activity to do with the Young Men. Week 2- Service Activity Service is always a great tool to open the Young Women’s lives to reaching outside of themselves and inviting happiness. Match service activity to the theme of the month to coincide with the fun, skills and spiritual learning. Week 3- Learn a skill Young Women’s is a great place to learn how to do many things for life that will prepare them for living on their own, college, mission, marriage and family. Learn a skill that matches the theme of the month and coincides with the fun, service and spiritual learning. Week 4- Spiritual Growth This is the pinnacle of all the Young Women have experienced, learned about and talked about. This week can still have activities that keep everyone engaged but might be a good time to have a more reverent feel, so that sacred things can be discussed and felt. This is the week when everything is tied together and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit and love, encourage self reflection and always use the scriptures, teachings of the living prophets and the For The Strength of Youth pamphlet to point them to temple ordinances and their relationship with their Heavenly Father and Savior, Jesus Christ. -

(801) 422-2299 / E-mail: [email protected] / Speeches Home Page When we speak of modesty, I am reminded of what Tevya, a character in the musical Fiddler on the Roof, said when he spoke of his beloved village of Anatevka. He said, “In Anatevka everyone knows who he is and what God expects him to do.” For me, that is the bottom line of any discussion on modesty. Modesty is often talked of in terms of dress and appearance, but modesty encompasses much more than the outward appearance. It is a condition of the heart. It is an outward manifestation of an inner knowledge and commitment. It is an expression that we understand our identity as daughters of God. It is an expression that we know what He expects us to do. It is a declaration of our covenant keeping. A question in the For the Strength of Youth booklet really is the question each of us must consider: “Am I living the way the Lord wants me to live?” ([Salt Lake City: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2001], 40). Like the people of Anatevka, do we know who we are? Do our daughters and young women know who they are? In speaking to members of the Church, Peter said: “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9). -

Molly Mormon Standards on Trial
Molly Mormon Standards on Trial A Mock Trial putting the standards of the youth of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as found in For the Strength of Youth booklet on trial. The case is the State of Cool versus Miss Molly Mormon Standards. It is a mock criminal case charging Miss Molly Mormon Standards with the two “criminal” counts. Both counts are in violation of the rules of the State of Cool. The prosecuting lawyer, Ms Cool brings witnesses to testify against Miss Molly Mormon Standards including; Ms Prom Queen, Ms Candy Samples and Ms Ava Tar. The defense attorney Ms. P. Progress brings to the stand witnesses defending the accused. The witnesses include: Miss Humility Anne Modesty, Miss Integrity Virtue Wisdom and Miss Divine Nature. Arguments are made for and against standards as found in the booklet For the Strength of Youth of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The LDS Church first published "For the Strength of Youth" in 1965. Subsequent editions were published in 1966, two in 1968, 1969, 1970, 1972, 1990, 2001, and most recently in 2011 (10th edition). The first edition of the pamphlet For the Strength of Youth had 16 pages, while the tenth edition has 44 pages. Regarding the latest updated, Young Women general president Elaine S. Dalton said, "The standards have not changed, but times have changed.... For the Strength of Youth has been revised to address the issues youth face today—to teach them the doctrine behind the standards and the promised blessings of obedience." This is a Mock trial waging the “cool” standards of today against the “timeless” standards as found in the LDS booklet For the Strength of Youth. -

Email: [email protected] (Received 12 January 2020; revised 14 May 2020; accepted 16 May 2020; first published online 14 July 2020) Abstract In multilevel marketing companies (MLMs), member-distributors earn income from selling products and recruiting new members. Successful MLMs require a social capital structure where members can access and mobilize both strong and weak social ties. Utah has a disproportionate share of MLM companies located in the state and a disproportionate number of MLM participants. We argue that Utah’s dominant religious institutions have led to the emergence of a social capital structure, making MLMs particularly viable. Utah is the most religiously homogeneous state; roughly half its population identifies as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The LDS Church’s institutions foster a social capital structure where (almost all) members have access to and can leverage social capital in all its forms. LDS institutions encourage members to make meaningful social connections characterized by trust and reciprocity with other church members in local neighborhoods and across the world. Introduction In multilevel marketing companies (MLMs), also known as network marketing or direct selling, member-distributors earn income both from selling products and recruiting new members (Liu, 2018; Sparks and Schenk, 2001).
