Marshall Plan & Berlin Airlift
Objectives: 1. Explain how the Marshall Plan, the Berlin airlift, and the creation of NATO helped achieve American goals in postwar Europe. 2. Assess the impact of two Communist advances on American foreign policy. 3. Summarize the effects of the cold war on American life. Main Idea: As the cold war intensified, American policy focused on rebuilding and unifying Western Europe. At home, emotionally charged spy cases raised fears of Communist infiltration into American society and government. Marshall Plan & Berlin Airlift • Secretary of State George C. Marshall created an economic plan to rebuild Europe after World War II. The Soviet Union and their Eastern European allies refused to take part in the Marshall Plan, but 16 European countries did accept economic aid from the U.S. ($13 billion over 4 years). • In 1948, to keep people from fleeing communism, Stalin blockaded Berlin. To avoid a war, the U.S. and Britain airlifted supplies to Berlin for 15 months called the Berlin Airlift. 1948 Berlin Airlift NATO & Warsaw Pact In 1949, NATO created a military alliance between 10 Western European countries, the U.S., and Canada. The countries viewed an attack against one country, as an attack against them all. In 1949, China becomes communist and Soviets create their atomic bomb, causing the U.S. to drastically increase peacetime defense spending to enforce Containment. In the 1950s, President Eisenhower will continue with Containment, even though his Secretary of State John Dulles wanted to end communism. The U.S. did not interfere in situations involving Soviet Satellite Nations. President Eisenhower did not want the Cold War to become an actual war. -

Results showed that China's propaganda effortsconsisted of official and unofficial activities and activities directed toward overseas Chinese. The official activities were carried out by the Chinese News Service and its branch offices in various American cities under the direction of the Ministry of Information's International Department in Chungking. The unofficial activities Were carried out by both Chinese and Americans, including missionaries, business people, and newspaper reporters, and the activities ditected toward the overseas Chinese in the United States were undertaken for the purpose of collecting money and arousing patriotism. The propaganda program fell four phases, the first beginning with the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War in 1937 and directed at exposing Japanese atrocities. The second phase began with the withdrawal of the Chinese central government to inner China in late 1937, continued until the beginning of the European war in 1939, and concentrated on economic and political interests. -

The Impact of the Second World War on the Decolonization of Africa Erin Myrice 2 “An African poet, Taban Lo Liyong, once said that Africans have three white men to thank for their political freedom and independence: Nietzsche, Hitler, and Marx.” 1 Marx raised awareness of oppressed peoples around the world, while also creating the idea of economic exploitation of living human beings. Nietzsche created the idea of a superman and a master race. Hitler attempted to implement Nietzsche’s ideas into Germany with an ultimate goal of reaching the whole world. Hitler’s attempted implementation of his version of a ‘master race’ led to one of the most bloody, horrific, and destructive wars the world has ever encountered. While this statement by Liyong was bold, it held truth. The Second World War was a catalyst for African political freedom and independence. -

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY INCLUSIVE WEALTH REPORT 2018 The term sustainable development was coined in 1987 by a group of economists at the World Commission on Foreword Environment and Development. By sustainable development the commission meant “... development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. But how do we measure this? How do we measure the productive base of a nation and the sustainability of development programmes over time? Focusing on gross domestic product (GDP) alone is clearly not the answer when it comes to measuring human well- being. The United Nations Development Programme’s annual Human Development Report routinely criticizes the attempts of national governments and international organizations to prescribe policy and assess economic performance. It says these organizations fail to correctly measure the ultimate purpose of an economy, which is to promote human well- being. It says that to use GDP and its distribution to assess economic performance is to confuse the means for the ends, and it cautions against the use of GDP as an index of economic achievement on the grounds that GDP is a measure of a country’s opulence, not its well-being. But I have never read a publication in which GDP was taken by its authors to be an end in itself. -

Soon after I moved to Erlangen, I started thinking over my PhD thesis topic. I was searching for an appropriate subject. Turkish Chrome Sales was one of the few topics that I had in my mind. One day, I went to my Doktorvater Prof. Thomas Philipp’s office and discussed the topics with him. We decided to postpone the decision a few days while I wanted to consider the topics one last time and do the final elimination. Afterwards I went to the cafeteria of the Friedrich Alexander University to have lunch. After the lunch, just before I left the cafeteria building, I recognized somebody speaking Turkish and reflexively turned around. He was a Turkish guest worker with a large thick moustache; I paid attention to his name tag for a second. His name was Krom, the Turkish word for chrome, since, for the first time in my life I was meeting someone with the name Krom I asked him about his name. Perhaps he is the only person with this name in Turkey. He told me that, this name was given by his father, who was a worker of a chrome mine in Central Anatolia and that day, when Mr.
