A solitary figure moves slowly and gracefully in the early morning mist settling over the park. Her movements are relaxed, yet contain a hint of controlled power. Her posture is remarkable, appearing upright yet not stiff; she glides over the dew- covered grass in what can only be described as a gentle dance. As you draw closer, you see her momentarily change the tempo of the dance, performing a blindingly fast kick with her right leg, then resuming her stately bal- let. She ends the movements with a momentary stillness, a calm that you can al- most feel. Thinking that this is one of the local college girls practicing for her dance class, you decide to approach her and ask what school she attends. Maybe the school offers ballroom lessons…. Twenty feet away, you are shocked to see that her hair has some gray in it. She turns in your direction and smiles at you…she must be at least 50. Closer still, you spy the wrinkles and laugh lines. Sixty? Her voice contains a tinkling laugh as she greets you, and you cannot help but notice that there is something about her, some type of happiness or joy; you see it in her face and the way she holds herself. After a spirited 20-minute conversation, you are in awe. She is 72 years old! She’s got a good 12 years on you, and you could not imagine being that graceful. She must have good genes. Too bad she’s just visiting here. If that’s what that “Tie Chee” stuff does for you, maybe you should look into it. Welcome to the world of T’ai Chi. This little story illustrates a few important points about what T’ai Chi really is. Of course, as they say in the commercials, your mileage may vary, but one thing is certain: Practicing T’ai Chi, even at its most basic level, will bestow a more relaxed mind, calmer spirit, and flexible body, along with the improvements of how you feel about yourself. Strong and sexy? You bet. T’ai Chi (tie chee), also occasionally spelled Taiji, is a system of exercises devel- oped over a span of hundreds of years in China. Originally designed as a fighting method similar to Kung Fu, T’ai Chi has so much more to offer for today’s mature TLFeBOOK 01 TC Chap 1.p65 13 11/3/2003, 4:52 PM 14 / T’ai Chi for Seniors adult. Starting to feel some pain in the left wrist? T’ai Chi can help. Recovering from a stroke? Yep, it can help that, too. It’s great for balance problems. Too much stress in your life? That’s a T’ai Chi specialty. The exercises and movements of T’ai Chi are performed in a slow and relaxed fashion, as opposed to most Western styles of exercise. T’ai Chi is: Noncompetitive. Nonimpact. Highly aerobic (in the sense that you are breathing deeply). Wonderful for joint health. Useful for increasing blood oxygen levels and flow. Useful for decreasing high blood pressure. Great for increasing range of motion. Commonly used to reduce the effects of stress. A way to increase your balance and gracefulness. A way to meet and socialize with like-minded people your age. T’ai Chi is perhaps the ultimate exercise for mature adults given its remarkable benefits and nonimpact, slow-speed performance. Speaking of slow speed, I once had a student, a young lady of some athletic ability, who was cursed with the modern-day affliction of stress. She felt she had to cram as much activity as possible into her already impossible schedule. Constantly running from one appointment to the next, she actually found time to fit her intro- ductory T’ai Chi class into her calendar. Showing up 10 minutes late with a harried expression on her face, she listened to my welcoming speech, all the while tapping her toes, and nervously watched me perform some Qigong movements (more about Qigong in coming chapters). Finally she blurted, “I have two weeks scheduled for these classes—is it going to take any longer than that?” After informing her that T’ai Chi often becomes the study of a lifetime, but that the benefits would start to appear in days or weeks, she simply shook her head and left. So much for an easy cure! You can perform T’ai Chi just about anywhere. It’s been performed on cruise ships, at picnics, in the park; it can even be done in your living room. You don’t need a ton of expensive sports gear or fancy machinery. Just yourself, and a little bit of time. In the touching movie Pushing Hands, an elderly T’ai Chi master, mourning the loss of his wife, feeling abandoned by his children, and out of step with modern TLFeBOOK 01 TC Chap 1.p65 14 11/3/2003, 4:52 PM The Basics / 15 times, begins to fall into depression. He runs away from his son’s home where he’s living, gets a job washing dishes in a restaurant, promptly loses the job, and ends up in jail on a civil disturbance charge. What do you think saves him? That’s right— T’ai Chi. He rediscovers his strength, his appeal to the opposite sex, and his reason for living. In the end, he is happily teaching T’ai Chi at a community center, living in his own apartment, and beginning a beautiful relationship with his lady friend.

    HAO STYLE TAIJI Posted on June 1, 2013 by Paul Brennan 武式太極拳 WU YUXIANG STYLE TAIJI BOXING 郝少如 編者 by Hao Shaoru 顧留馨 審 edited by Gu Liuxin [published June, 1963]– 郝為真(1849─1920) Hao Weizhen – 武式太極拳簡介 INTRODUCTION TO WU YUXIANG STYLE TAIJI BOXING 河北永年人武河清,字禹襄(1812─1880),出身於小官僚地主家庭,兄弟三人在家練 習武術。當楊露禪(1799─1872)自陳家溝返鄉,禹襄兄弟愛其術,從學陳氏老架太極 拳,得其大概。禹襄兄澄清(1800─1884)於1852年中進士,官河南舞陽縣知縣,禹襄 赴兄任所,便道過溫縣陳家溝,擬訪露禪之師陳長興(1771─1853)求益。道經趙堡鎮 ,知長興已老病(這年長興已82歲,越歲卒),時陳青萍在趙堡鎮教授陳氏新架太極 拳,遂從青萍學新架月餘,備悉理法。澄清於舞陽鹽店得王宗岳(乾隆年間人)《太 極拳譜》,禹襄得譜研究,更有發悟,以練拳心得發揮王氏舊譜之義,為《十三勢行 工歌訣》作註解十條,名為《打手要言》;又衍為《十三勢行工心解》四則;並歸納 鍛煉要領為《身法十要》。其著作皆根據其本身的體驗,故簡練精要,無一浮詞。 1 禹襄之甥李經綸,字亦畬(1832─1892),於1853年始從禹襄學拳。亦畬研究太極拳, 仿禹襄實驗之法,招致鄉勇以自驗其技,一再筆錄修訂。亦畬之孫槐蔭於1935年在李 廉讓堂本《太極拳譜序》中說:“此譜系先祖晚年所著,中經多次修改,方克完成。每 得一勢巧妙,一著竅要,即書一紙貼於座右,比試揣摩,不斷實驗,逾數日覺有不妥 應修改,即撕下,另易他條,往復撕貼必至完善而始止,久之遂集成書。”李亦畬的太 極拳論文有:“五字訣”一篇、“撒放秘訣”擎引鬆放七言四句、“走架打手行工要言”一篇 (闡述了走架即是打手、打手即是走架,練拳和推手相輔相成之理)。近代太極拳的 傳布,以楊氏祖孫三代對教材教法不斷創新之力為多,而於拳理的鑽研總結,首推武 、李,較之王宗岳《太極拳論》之抽象性的概括,原為具體切實,有繼承、有發展, 乃能自成一家。 武禹襄拳式既不同於陳式老架和新架,亦不同於楊式大架和小架,學而化之,自成一 派,其特點是:姿勢緊湊,動作舒緩,步法嚴格分清虛實,胸部、腹部的進退旋轉始 終保持中正,完全是用內動的虛實轉換和“內氣潛轉”來支配外形;左右手各管半個身 體,不相逾越,出手不過足尖。原來也有跳躍動作,到四傳的郝月如(1877─1935)才 改為不縱不跳;雙擺連也改為不拍打腳面,這是為適應年老體弱者的需要而作的改革 。 武式推手的步法,僅為進三步半,退三步半一種。 禹襄教讀自娛,亦畬行醫為業,均以儒生自居,在鄉授徒極少。李所傳以同鄉郝和( 字為真,1849─1920)的技術最精。武式太極拳於民國初傳入北京時,有些人把它稱作 李架,待為真之子月如和其孫少如於1928間去南京、上海教拳時,也有人稱它為郝架 。月如遺有太極拳著作多篇。武、李後輩多不傳研太極拳,武式遂由郝氏傳習。少如 不教拳亦已多年,上海市體育宮為了發掘傳統,於1961年開設了武式太極拳學習班, 請郝少如教授,以廣其傳。武式太極拳從未有圖解問世,本書拳照系由郝少如照像, 並寫動作說明。 (顧留馨) Wu Heqing, called Yuxiang (1812-1880), was from Yongnian county, Hebei. He was from a family of landed gentry lower-level officials, and the three brothers in the family practiced martial arts. After Yang Luchan (1799-1872) came home from the Chen family village, Wu Yuxiang and his brothers admired his art, and they learned from him the “old frame” Chen Style Taiji Boxing, obtaining its general idea.

    Yang-style Taijiquan ‘Eight-section Brocade’ 䮉ୗॡ禅೦獌ྦྷ梁 In an introduction to his 2011 book ‘Yang-style Taiji Real Power’ (Yang-shi Taiji ,author Sun Yizhao explains (ۑZhen Gong 䮉ୗॡ禅፥ Taiji Baduanjin was originally created by the Yang family as a training method for mobilizing qi and ဩ). Like other forms of baduanjin there are eightۑtraining jin (yùnqì liànjìn gōngfǎ 螀穥娞㵇 sections but the movements are not the same. It can be distinguished by it's 'forging and smelting' (duànliàn 梵簉) of the sections and joints of the body and the strengthening of the internal organs and their way of functioning. It strengthens visceral system functioning and also contains within it a great deal of attack and defence training methods (jìjī ದ䢗). The Yang-style Taijiquan Baduanjin was originally an indoor family neigong of the Yang family— a secret weapon sorts. It can be seen variously as a good solid warmup and strength and flexibility practice or as an essential piece of the Yang-style Taijiquan curriculum. Baduanjin (bāduànjǐn 獌ྦྷ梁) means ‘eight-section brocade’ and connotes the side by side placement of different weaves of fabric seen, for example, in the robes of Emperors or monks. Chinese Buddhist monk’s silk brocade robe c. 1700-1750 The term baduanjin first appears in Hong Mai’s ‘Records of the Listener’ in the Song Dynasty (1127-1279). The Emperor’s Chief Secretary Li Siju is described as living a simple life which includes getting up at night to practice deep breathing, self massage and exercises called baduanjin. Today a standard set of baduanjin is practiced and is readily found in books and on the internet.

It engages in the studies of modern Chinese literature and culture from three perspectives. First, approaching martial arts fiction as a literary subgenre, it partakes in the genre studies of martial arts fiction and through investigating major writers and their works explains how the genre was written, received, reflected, and innovated during the period in question. Second, positioning martial arts fiction as one of the most well received literary subgenre in the modern Chinese literary field, it discusses the “great divide” between “pure” and “popular” literatures and the question of how to evaluate popular literature in modern China. Yang became a teacher in his own right, and his subsequent expression of t'ai chi ch'uan became known as the Yang-style, and directly led to the development of other three major styles of t'ai chi ch'uan see below. Yang Luchan and some would say the art of t'ai chi ch'uan, in general came to prominence as a result of his being hired by the Chinese Imperial family to teach t'ai chi ch'uan to the elite Palace Battalion of the Imperial Guards ina position he held until his death. Yang Jianhou the third son Yang Chien-hou Jianhou — passed on the middle frame long form, sometimes called the 2nd generation Yang form or the Yang Jian hou form to his disciples who still pass on this more martial form that is when seen more reminiscent of Chen style for which it is closer to in time as well as form than the Yang Cheng fu form or 3rd generation styles. Thus, Yang Chengfu is largely responsible for standardizing and popularizing the Yang-style t'ai chi ch'uan widely practised today. Yang Chengfu developed his own shortened "large frame" version of the Yang long Form, in order to make it easier to teach to modern students who are busy with modern life.

Recent simplification of the original classic styles has made Tai Ji Quan easier to adopt in practice. Thus, the traditional legacy of using Tai Ji Quan for self-defense, mindful nurturing of well-being, and fitness enhancement has been expanded to more contemporary applications that focus on promoting physical and mental health, enhancing general well-being, preventing chronic diseases, and being an effective clinical intervention for diverse medical conditions. As the impact of Tai Ji Quan on physical per- formance and health continues to grow, there is a need to better understand its historical impact and current status. This paper provides an overview of the evolution of Tai Ji Quan in China, its functional utility, and the scientific evidence of its health benefits, as well as how it has been a vehicle for enhancing cultural understanding and exchanging between East and West.     NOTES Introduction 1. One immediately encounters a “term problem” in discussing a phenomenology of race. Terms such as “Chinese” and “white” suddenly become woefully inadequate (as if they were not so already). I try to address this problem in a straightfor- ward way: when I wish to call attention to the term problem within the context of my arguments, I place quotation marks around terms like “Chinese,” “Euro-American,” “foreigner,” “white,” et cetera. When I momentarily ask that the reader accept these categories, for example, in my discussion of Chinese history and Chinese American immigration, I refrain from using quotation marks. 2. Gongfu, commonly written in English as “kung fu,” also refers to “skill,” “work,” or “time.” The “kung fu” that has become part of American vernacular functions in English as a kind of catch-all term for Chinese martial arts, but it is more often used this way in Chinese, for example, when the conversation revolves around foreign practice of martial arts or when the term wushu is avoided. Wushu is the term for “martial arts” in Mandarin Chinese, but it has acquired a complicated associa- tion with performance-oriented martial arts that have little or nothing to do with combat training. Practitioners will usually refer to a particular art by its style name or family association. 3. The style is properly referred to as “Wu style taijiquan” (Wu shi taijiquan). When I conflate “Wu” and “Ma” family names, my purpose is to specify the lineage that has developed through the married couple of Ma Yueliang and Wu Yinghua.

    Xiong-Stil Taijiquan Beispiel einer umfassenden Überlieferung des frühen Yang-Stils Von Michael A. DeMarco Xiong-Stil ist ein Zweig des Taijiquan, der außerhalb von Taiwan wenig bekannt ist. Er geht auf Xiong Yanghe (1888 – 1981) zurück, bietet jedoch nach den Recherchen von Michael A. DeMarco vor allem einen Einblick in die frühe Überlieferung des Yang-Stils, die hier in umfassender Form fortgeführt wird.Der Autor fasst die soziopolitischen Bedingungen zusammen, unter denen sich das Taijiquan im 19. und der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts in China entwickelt hat, in einer Zeit, die geprägt war von inneren und äußeren Kriegen, Hungersnöten, politischen Unruhen, Demoralisierung – dem Niedergang des einst so mächtigen und kulturell überlegenen chinesischen Reichs. Er macht damit zwei Aspekte deutlich, die für die Entwicklung des Taijiquan ausschlaggebend wurden: die Notwendigkeit einer effektiven Selbstverteidigung und den Wunsch nach allgemeiner Selbststärkung. DeMarco Xiong style is a branch of Taijiquan that is little-known outside Taiwan. It goes back to Xiong Yanghe (1888 – 1981) but according to the research of Michael A. DeMarco it provides above all an insight into the early transmission of the Yang style, which is here continued in a comprehensive form. The author summarises the socio-political conditions under which Taijiquan developed in the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. This was a time that was marked by civil and inter-nation wars, famines, political unrest and demoralisation – the decay of the once so powerful and culturally superior Chinese empire.
