Siblings Rob Petrie and Julie Norney tackled the 2019 City to Surf in Sydney with excellent results.

Julie ran 54:23 and was first of 4039 finishers in the W50-54 age group and 20th overall of 34,750 Females.

Rob was 59th of 6313 finishers in the M45-49 age group in 53.23. He was 349th Male overall of 35,620 finishers.

Approximately 80,000 runners entered.

I guess I’ll never know what it’s like to beat 79,000 people home in one race

Bob Henderson of Knox, was travel- ling nicely at Lillydale Lake parkrun until someone put a bridge in front of him. I don’t know that he’s a Geelong fan but he looks a lot like Joel Selwood. He needed 11 stitches to his fore- head wound.

The XCR (cross country & road) season is now completed and while the final results have not yet been published, with one round to go our teams were placed as follows : Our Division 4 Men’s team is in 4th place (out of 14) and our Division 7 team is 2nd. Unfortunate- ly we have not had enough Women competing to get meaningful results but we hope to rectify that next season. Keep in mind that you will be welcome to join our teams either in next year’s XCR or the team starting 5th October.

NEWS FROM EAST BURWOOD Hawley Thomas 3 x 2000 m relay The second annual Hawley Thomas Relay was held on a cold, but clear night on 22nd August. East Burwood put on a great supper for all those that came from other venues. As well as venue teams, the Thomas family also fielded a team. The men’s team winners were East Burwood with Stephen Day (7:55), Paul Earle (8:18) and Adam McCann (8:06). Shane Grund was by far the fastest with 6:03, but Knox had to settle for second place. East Burwood also won the women’s race with Ros Lording (9:00), Janet Holmes (9:43) and Chris Robinson (10:00). Ros was the fastest woman. East Burwood also had a second men’s team with Christopher Worsnop (9:24), Sam Defanis (9:42) and Ashley Ryan (10:22).

Freezing Freddo Frog 4 km handicap series. This series continued in July and August with heats 3 and 4. In heat 3 Paul Earle was the back-marker. He ran 17:52 to chase down Leonie Gillies and Sam Defanis. In the final heat Liz Clennell ran 20:06 to beat Leonie Gillies (24:05) by a minute. Sam Defanis (21:29) was third on handicap. The medals in the series were won by those who competed consistently over the four rounds. First was Leonie, with Stephen Day second, and Michelle Quan third.

Winter Walk Series There were four heats of this series with each one walked over 1000 m. Melanie Bissett started well with a good win in the first heat beating Liz Clennell and Brian Tait. Liz won the second heat, with Christopher Worsnop second and Brian Tait third again. In heat 3 Worsnop passed Liz and the front marker Brian to shuffle the top three places. He just pipped Gerald Burke on the line to win the fourth heat. The series was finally won by Gerald, with Brian coming second, and Peter third – all rewarded for competing in every heat.

Six Kilometre Legends’ Handicap Series In the final round, Liz Clennell started as the front-marker and held off the field to win in 31:47. Stephen Day ran 26:43 to come in second, Sam Defanis was third with 31:46. Liz and Geoff Wheeler were both rewarded for their consistency over the series. The winner had to be decided on a count-back, so Liz won the gold medal, Geoff won the silver, and Sam came third.

East Burwood 4000 m Age Graded Championship Only four runners braved the cold night to complete the ten laps this year. Stephen Day took off clearly and ran well to be the race winner in 17:03. Michelle Quan (19:49) and Christopher Worsnop (19:29) ran consistently to finish close together. Being an older runner, Sam Defanis brought up the rear with 20:42. Despite the gaps, the age grading was very close. Michelle was the winner with 66.94 %, followed by Sam with 66.59 %, then Stephen on 66.3 %. Worsnop was on 64 %.

Doug Orr Self Handicap 880 yards When the Doug Orr series starts you know that Spring is not far away. Heat 1 is always tricky because it is self handicapped, so judgement of one’s ability is critical. If you run faster than expected by 4 seconds or more – DISQUALIFIED. In heat 1 this happened to Bob Henderson, Jack Durrant and Chris Robinson. This left Melanie Bissett as the winner, followed by Ashley Ryan and Paul Durrant. Bob Hen- derson and Ashley Ryan were both too quick in heat 2, leaving Christopher Worsnop and Michelle Quan as the two place-getters. We are looking forward to the DOUG ORR INTERVENUE FINAL on THURSDAY 10th OCTOBER Christopher Worsnop 8

Masterpieces IAAF RULE 180 -17 TIME ALLOWED FOR TRIALS

The time allowed for “trials” -i.e. throws or jumps - was 1 minute until in 2017 when it was changed to 30 seconds. The IAAF more recently reverted to 1 min- ute, but WMA is staying with 30 seconds

IAAF rules do not automatically become WMA rules. They must be accepted by the WMA Council before they become WMA rules.

WMA accepted the change to 30 seconds. I have just been advised that the WMA Council meeting in To- ronto to coincide with a year to go to the WMA Cham- pionships there has not accepted a change back to 1 minute and therefore the allowed time remains at 30 seconds.

The booklet “WMA RULES OF COMPETITION” which is on the WMA website will need to be amended to show this difference between IAAF/WMA rules.

The Doug Orr 880 yards Inter-venue Final at East Burwood Venue (Bill Sewart Athletic Track, Burwood Hwy) on Thursday 10th October at 7:10 pm A Self Handicap Event $ 5-00 per runner. Supper is included.

• Each runner estimates his/her time for 880 yards (slightly longer than 800 m). There will be an entry sheet for you to record this. • Your handicap, that is the time at which you will start after the starting gun, will be 5.00 minus your estimated time. For example, if you think that you will run 3:10, then you will start 1:50 after the gun is fired. So if everyone runs his/her estimated time everyone will finish together. • However, you must not run 4 seconds or more than your estimated time. So anyone who finishes under 4:56 on the stop watch will be eliminated. • The winner of the handicap is thus first across the line, but not before 4:56 on the stop watch. • RUNNERS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO WEAR OR CARRY ANY SORT OF TIMING DEVICE. Spectators are not permitted to call times. The track clock will be switched off after the last runner has started. • Four runners from each Victorian Masters venue are invited to compete. • The placings of the finishers who are not eliminated will be added for team scores. The scores of the first three runners from each venue will be added to make that venue’s team score. The winning team is the one with the lowest score. • Runners are expected to wear their venue colours. • Medals will be awarded for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd individual placegetters.

• The Team trophy will be presented to the winning team.

ANDY SALTER MEMORIAL RELAY

When – Wednesday, 5th February 2020

Where – Ross Reserve, Memorial Drive, Noble Park

The Andy Salter Relay has been a highlight of the Springvale /Noble Park calendar for many years. Also held on the same night is the Bert Warburton Memorial Walk Relay.

The Andy Salter Relay is run over a 3.1km road course, with four runners in each team complet- ing one lap of the course. There are two divisions, one for Challenge teams and the other for Fun Run teams.

Challenge teams must consist of three men and one woman and the total combined age of the team must be at least 175 years. The winning team will be presented with the “Andy Salter Per- petual Trophy” to hold for 12 months. Members of the first three teams receive trophies.

Fun Run teams consist of four runners but there are no age (other than runners being of Masters age) or sex restrictions.

The Bert Warburton Walk Relay is over a 2 km course with each walker completing one lap. Teams consist of three walkers of masters age and can be male, female or mixed.

To give everyone a chance at a trophy all run and walk teams will compete on an estimated time basis. Upon entry, teams nominate an estimated total team time. The teams (one run and one walk) that finishes closest to their estimated time will receive trophies. The first three Challenge teams will be excluded, having already received trophies.

Entry fee is $12.00 per run team and $9 per walk team, payable on registration between 6.30 pm and 7.00 pm on the night.

The program for the night is;

7.10 pm 100 metre 7.15 pm Andy Salter relay/Bert Warburton Relay

There will be a 3km track run after the relay for the truly dedicated, followed by supper and pres- entations. Come along and have a great night.

2019 Winter Inter-Venue Masters Challenge It was a beautiful morning for the second Masters’ Winter Inter-Venue Challenge, but the weather forecast was far from favourable. Still, athletes turned up early to register, and few were deterred.

This year Paul Reynolds, from the local Little Athletics club, came to set up and operate the timing gates, which was a great help. Other athletes who were unable to compete through injury were happy to come along and officiate on the day.

The was the first event, and of the four age groups represented in the first heat, three broke the meet record. There appeared to be a bit of a tailwind, and Shirley Coppock (EB, aged 83), broke the record she’d set in 2018. In the W35, Jessica Dux (Croy, W35) smashed the Victorian record with 8.21. Unfortunately this could not be acknowledged because of the lack of a wind gauge.

The men did just as well. Five age groups were included in the first heat, with records set in each. Bob Wishart (GE, M75) was the stand out, his 9.00 seconds being close to his Victorian record. With a wind gauge, Jim Sinclair (GE) could have set a Victorian record in the M95, as could vision-impaired athlete, Andrew Close (Coll), in the M30. John Aughey also broke his M80 meet record as did Keith Howden (M70) and Gary O’Dwyer (M60). Luke De Biasi (Donc), achieved an outstanding run, equalling the Victorian record in the M55 with 7.81. At the end of the 60 metre races Doncaster was leading on 19, to Glen Eira and East Burwood both on 18 points

Because of the weather forecast, the program was compressed and the women’s and men’s heats were combined into just two races. Every age group in the women’s race set or broke the current meet record, with Sarah Lorentzen (GE, W40) being too strong for Susan Short (Ment, W45) during the second half of the race. In the men’s race, Cameron Simon (Donc, M45) cleared out to win by almost half a lap in a new record time of 1:30.7. After the 600 metres Doncaster and Glen Eira were both on 23 points with East Burwood on 18.

All the athletes in the walk were combined into one race, won by Kevin Cassidy (Ment, M55) in a meet record time of 3:35.0. Kylie Irshad (Casey, W45) was second and Andrew Jamieson (Donc, M70) third, both walking meet record times. After the walk, Doncaster was leading on 37 points to Glen Eira 33 and East Burwood 20.

There were a number of records in the , with World Champion Marg Tweedie (Donc) 24.63 in the W65, Jessica Dux (Croy) 19.57 in the W35, Bob Wishart (GE) 21.65 in the M75, Murray Lawrence (Invite) 20.94 in the M65 and Luke De Biasi (Donc) 18.97 in the M55. In the M45, Stewart Dobrzyzski (Knox) continued his close rivalry with Justin Hanrahan (Coll), running a record 18.10 and surpassing the old record set by World Champion Andrew Wilcox in 2018.

After the 150 Doncaster had extended their lead to 57 points from Glen Eira 48 and East Burwood 35.

This year the 1,000 metres was replaced by a 1 mile. This event was dominated by Doncaster with Maryanne Murray (W45) winning the women’s heat from Susan Howell (Gee, W55), and Cameron Simon (M45) the men’s from Rob Italia (Casey, M50), both lapping many of the other competitors. However, after the mile Glen Eira had cut back Doncaster’s lead to 4 points, 62 to 58.

There were a number of records set in the 1600 metres walk with Kevin Cassidy (Ment, M55) again winning from David Smyth (Invite, M45), Kylie Irshad (Casey, W45) and Andrew Jamieson (Donc, M70). Glen Eira had now pulled back to level pegging with Doncaster on 70, with East Burwood on 36.

The sky was looking threatening as the 300 metre races commenced. This year, Marg Tweedie (now W65, Donc) ran two seconds faster than she had in 2018 when setting the W60 meet record. One reason for her faster performance this year may have been that Christine Robinson (EB, W60), was hot on her heels, and claimed her W60 meet record. Jes- sica Dux (Croy) ran an astounding 45.71 in the W35. Keith Howden (M70 Coll), getting better with age, bettered his own record from the previous year and defeated Bob Wishart (M75, GE), who also broke the meet record. Murray Lawrence (Invite) broke the M65 meet record.

At the end of the Doncaster had a seemingly insurmountable lead with 92 points to Glen Eira 78 and East Burwood 43. 15

2019 Winter Inter-Venue Masters Challenge

The 2018 2,000m event was replaced with a 3,000m this year. The program was now running half an hour ahead of the new schedule, and one of the Doncaster young guns arrived to run the 3,000 to find it had already started. The rain was starting to come down as it kicked off, but no one objected. Campbell McLennan (Donc, M45) won from Maryanne Mur- ray (Donc, M45), Simon Lloyd (GE, M60) and Susan Howell (Gee, W55). Glen Eira pulled closer, but couldn’t quite catch Doncaster ending up 6 points adrift at 92 to 98, East Burwood on 44 and Casey on 39.

There was a general lack of enthusiasm for running the relays with the deteriorating weather. The total team scores at the time unknown, team managers agreed to allow the results to stand as is. Feedback was positive and everyone went away looking forward to next year – particularly Glen Eira! Doncaster retaining the Shield, but eager for a challenge in 2020!

RESULTS - 2019 AMA 20k ROAD WALK CHAMPIONSHIP Five Victorians made their way to Adelaide for this event. It looked like being a shocker of a day as the Saturday was freezing, pouring rain and windy. It contin- ued to be more of the same on the Sunday morning but magically cleared up for the race and ended up being perfect conditions. The outstanding performance was from Andrew Jamieson in the M70 age group walking a 93.88% and showing signs of getting back to his world record setting best. 20k Thanks to George White and his crew for putting on an excellent event.

I was telling my daughter recently that I was a teenager before I first saw and ate a capsicum. I was a married man before I discovered zucchini in a restaurant. I had to ask the waiter what it was. Our diets have changed so much in the last 30 years. When I was a kid vegetables used to consist of peas, carrots, brussel sprouts, cab- bage, cauliflower, beans, potatoes and pumpkin. There were things like swede and turnip for soups. If you go to the Market today you will see an amazing array of fruit and vegetables, many you’ve never seen before. Potatoes for all occa- sions. This one for mashing, that one for chips, another one for roasting and even one that’s good for gnocchi. And don’t get me started on Asian greens. There seem to be endless varieties A special meal used to be a roast. No questions asked. Dinner through the week - although we called it tea - was usually meat and 3 veg. Per- haps grilled chops and boiled peas, carrots and spuds. Now it’s pasta. Or stir fry. It used to be that spaghetti came in cans with a tomato sauce and was anything but al dente. Rice was to be used in rice pudding and nothing else. And now we go out for breakfast. Can you im- agine asking someone out for breakfast even 20 years ago. “Mmm, I just can’t decide between the smashed avo, the goats cheese and porcini mushroom omelet or the eggs benedict ”. What ever happened to Weet Bix with a centimetre of sugar on them ? Well, when it’s all said and done what a lucky bunch we are, having all these wonderful ingre- dients at our disposal. Did you know that I pre-date real coffee in ? I remember this stuff called Bushell’s coffee and chicory. It was a liquid and you put it in hot milk, at least my mother did. It bore little resemblance to coffee as we know it today but it was sweetened and therefore OK by me. 30 It’s News to me Masters athlete appointed to lead British Athletics. British Masters Athletic Federation are delighted that one of their active members, Zara Hyde-Peters, is now taking over as Chief Executive of UKA, the national governing body of ath- letics. With less than twelve months before the Olympics in Tokyo, she has a daunting task. UKA receives one of the largest financial grants from the Government, distributed to all Olym- pic Sports Bodies through UK Sport, to help elite athletes and for development, but is performance-related.

Zara finished 4th in the 1500m final at the 1994 Common- wealth Games, going on to also finish just out of the medals in both the W55 1500m and 5,000m in our Championships in Perth in 2016.

Irie Hill, who used to live in Melbourne, has set a new W50 World Outdoor Record in the Pole Vault clearing 3.41 metres. She won the WMA Indoor title in Torun with a vault of 3.51m. Irie was jumping in the Nationales Wai- blingen Leichtathletik Meet in . Unfortunately, the record she broke was that of Aussie Dawn Hartigan. 31

FINAL BROWNE SHIELD RESULTS

What a contest this year’s Browne Shield was. In the end, Knox was the win- ner once again, but Eastern Masters and Frankston put up such great efforts that they each deserved to win. Knox’s strength, apart from having lot’s of high scoring runners, has always been having a full representation in each event. Well this year Eastern and Frankston were able to get 3 scores in each round and it made a big difference. Admittedly, Knox were without several of their “guns” for most of the rounds but that made for a closer contest. We had two new individual winners. Michelle Quan of Knox was the Women’s winner and she and Tracey Colbert of Coburg were the only the only women to complete all events. Greg Lovejoy of Frankston was the Men’s winner by a “smidge” from his teammate Pramesh Prasad. Greg, Pramesh and Chris Worsnop were the only Men to complete all 5 races. So many times over the years I’ve seen older athletes make an absolute mess of the 3 point start. The 3 point start (TPS) is half way between a standing start and a crouch start using starting blocks. It was developed to give some of the benefits of a crouch start but does not require such explosive strength. Hence it’s appeal to Masters athletes One major problem I see with the TPS is that the athlete often goes into this position at the call “on your marks” and has to stay there while other starters do their jumps, back kicks, claps and general time wasting. By the time the starter calls “set” they are wobbling all over the place. My advice would be to go into the TPS position at the “on your marks” call then relax with your free forearm resting on your thigh until the “set” call. You can hold you free arm higher or lower according to which balances you best. In the photos we have a young male athlete and Lenore Lambert, who is a Master competing in Mackay. Now, Lenore is a very strong athlete as you can see by her remarkable physique and lovely tan. She really nailed the TPS so my advice is more for older athletes, who may not have such remarkable physiques. Or tans. A consideration also is whether the athlete is wearing spikes or not. You really need spikes to do a TPS as you are right on the toes or balls of your feet and you need that grip. Purely for study purposes, I have included another shot of Lenore and her remarkable...... technique.

JOHN WAITE TROPHY In 2017 a tribute to John Waite was published in Footprints after his unfortunate passing. Many mem- bers of VMA will have pleasant memories of John’s achievements and his friendship. John was a member of VMA from 1981 to 2006 running principally at Mentone but also at Victorian, Australian and World Championships with distinction. John ran numerous and perhaps his best performances over that distance were in the Mel- bourne Marathon where, between the ages of 40 and 55, he broke 3.00 hours on 11 occasions. Earlier this year John’s wife, Nyala, also a former competitor at Mentone, suggested that we have a trophy in John’s memory and we seized on the idea with gusto. John was renowned for running three events in one night and we designed the trophy series on this basis. Our records showed that the last three events John ran at Mentone before moving to his native New Zealand in 2006 were 1 Mile Self handicap, 100m E.T. and 4 Km E.T. This formed the basis of our John Waite Trophy evening and the response was overwhelming with 21 runners taking part and the winners being decided by points over the three events. It is a long time since we had 21 starters in the 100m including several long distance specialists who toed the line ten- tatively. The weather was kind and the atmosphere was light hearted though competitive when the gun fired. Nyala was visiting Melbourne and was able to watch the events and present the trophies for Best Male and Best Female over the three events. The popular winners were Julian Boland and Kuni Bowden. Runners up were Ashley Page and Sandra Wynne. 39

Opportunity to Volunteer

I know what you’re thinking – what can I do to repay masters athletics for the change it’s made to the lives of many people, for the health benefits to the many unfit, over weight couch potatoes who now train at a venue a couple of times a week, who compete and win medals, who join in team events and experience the camaraderie of competing and the satisfaction of success.

Here are a couple of perfect opportunities to give back to the community, and what’s more you’ll get out of the house every few weeks to work with a like minded team committed to developing and growing an already strong organisation. VMA Treasurer

If you have some accounting or bookeeping experience you could take on the role of VMA Treasurer, a task that retiring incumbent Andrew Edwards will tell you has given him great satisfaction over the past five years. Andrew is willing to stick around long enough to show you the ropes. You will find that VMA is in a strong position financially and the monthly tasks involved including paying bills and reporting income are not onerous. An annual finance report comes only once a year. VMA Secretary

If numbers don’t appeal but words do then the job for you is that of Secretary – again Phil Urquhart is prepared to stay on until year end if needed to ensure a smooth handover.

This role includes handling email and phone correspondence from members and prospective members, liasing with Australian Masters Athletics and Athletics Victoria. Other tasks are preparation for monthly committee meetings including distribution of reports to other committee members.

Further details of both jobs are available from Phil Urquhart [email protected] 40

The Alice Springs Masters Games - 10-17 October 2020 The Alice Springs Masters Games is the longest running event of its kind in Australia. First held in 1986, it has earned the indisput- able reputation as “The Friendly Games”. With around 35 different sports available, approximately 4,000 masters participants from all over Australia, and including many international athletes, gather in Alice Springs each two years to take part. The Games span a week in October and are held each two years. The Games begin with a colourful street parade of athletes onto Anzac Oval for the official opening, followed by a concert and fire- works. Seven days later, the Games are officially closed with another concert. The overall atmosphere cre- ated by the Games organisers encourage many athletes to return year after year. All information about the Games can be accessed online https://www.alicespringsmastersgames.com.au/
