Scenarios for the Future The account of recent developments in Taiwan in these chapters derives from study of the local press, especially the English language Free China Journal, the Chinese language China Daily News, and the independent magazine New Journal ist. The author has also had the benefit of extensive interviews in Taiwan with many in politics, business, the media and academic life in 1988 and 1989. The opinions expressed, especially the prognostications in Chapter 10, however, are of course the author's own responsibility.
