It consists of the Mayor ! and six Councillors representing the City. Mission Members of Council are elected by residents to a four-year term of offce. Our city was formed by the union of three municipalities: the township of Dymond, and the Towns of Haileybury, and New Liskeard. Temiskaming Shores is known for its wonderful views on the shores of Lake Temiskaming. I would like to welcome our newcomers with the “Northern Hospitality” that we are so famous for. By embracing our immigrant roots we recognize that newcomers bring with them the rich diversity that makes Canada a woven masterpiece made of many distinctive strands of culture and ethnicity. Our diversifed and active community offers an outstanding quality of life. We offer lakefront housing along with many other choices of homes in a rural or city setting. We have quality English and French education systems from primary to post-secondary. We also offer local health care, including the Temiskaming Hospital and two family health teams. The business community is growing and offers friendly service coupled with small town charm. Temiskaming Shores has a strong sense of community, which is shown in all the local events and activities that are hosted by the abundant volunteer organizations in our area. Whether it’s celebrating Summerfest, riding your motorcycle in the Bikers Reunion, participating in the New Liskeard Fall Fair, honouring our veterans on Remembrance Day or building a foat for the Santa Claus Parade, our residents truly make our City a community. Our opportunities for growth are driven by the diversifcation of the forestry, mining, agricultural and tourism industries in this region. The City of Temiskaming Shores has developed a strong service industry and is recognized as the service and retail hub for the District of Temiskaming and Temiscamingue, Quebec. Nous retrouvons une présence française au Témiskaming dès les années 1670 avec l’établissement d’un poste de traite de fourrures à l’embouchure des rivières Montréal et Matabitchuan sur une île du lac Témiscamingue. Dès le début de l’ouverture du territoire, les francophones sont venus de partout en Amérique pour s’installer en grande partie sur les riches terres agricoles. La francophonie témiskamienne s’est créée des institutions à son image. D’abord, nous retrouvons des paroisses catholiques avec ses associations telles que les Chevaliers de Colomb et les Filles d’Isabelle; trois écoles catholiques élémentaires, une école publique, une école secondaire catholique, un Centre d’éducation des adultes et un Centre d’apprentissage. La région compte aussi sur une caisse populaire avec ses trois succursales (Earlton, New Liskeard et Haileybury), des Clubs de services tels que le Richelieu Timiskaming, les Lions d’Earlton, deux chapitres de l’Union culturelle des Franco-Ontariennes (Earlton et New Liskeard); et trois clubs de l’âge d’or (d’Earlton, Sourire de New Liskeard et Club Joyeux de Haileybury). Nous retrouvons aussi une fondation, la Fondation communautaire du Témiskaming, l’Association de canot-camping du lac Témiscamingue et le Concours de labour du Témiskaming. L’Association canadienne-française de l’Ontario (ACFO), région Témiskaming, œuvre en région depuis 1972. Elle a aidé à mettre sur pied, le Centre culturel ARTEM, le Centre de santé communautaire du Témiskaming, le campus du Témiskaming du Collège Boréal et le Festival des Folies Franco-Fun. On retrouve aussi plusieurs francophones à la tête d’entreprises de la région. Nous sommes reconnus pour être très accueillants. The surrounding First Nations communities include: Matachewan First Nation, Beaver House First Nation, Temagami First Nation and Timiskaming First Nation. The majority of the indigenous population in the area are of Algonquin and Ojibwe tribes. Temiskaming Native Women’s Support Group (TNWSG) Keepers of the Circle Aboriginal Family Learning Centre is located at 121 Scott Street in Temiskaming Shores. It is a place that indigenous and non-indigenous people can gather. We offer various programs such as: licensed child care services, healthy lifestyle education, prenatal nutrition, referrals to community services and family support services for children and families.
