HIT OF THE WEEK: I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND - Beatles (Capitol) Nothing, I said nothing, will keep this from hitting number one. It’s #10 in a week for Dean Griffith-WPGC- Washington, D#C. It's the number two request for Pat Hughes-WQXI-, in the same period of exposure. Dick Starr-WFUN-Miami reports similiar response. This is iti CORRESPONDENTS POPULAR PICK: HOW MUCH CAN A LONELY HE ART STAND/HE SAYS THE SAME THINGS TO ME - Skeeter Davis (RCA) Many picks on both. The ballad will lose out in the end, but either side is fine for now. HOT ACTION RECORD; YOU DON’T OWN ME - Lesley Gore (M ercury) Her fourth hit in a row. Forget the flip. This is a top twenty winner. SOUTHERN SURVEY CHOICE OF THE WEEK: STOP AND THINK IT OVER - Dale & Grace (Montel) See Review and Comment Section. Atlanta, 13,000. And it’s only been out a couple of days2 PENETRATION - The Pyramids (Best) Credit Dick Starr-WFUN-Miami for being the first to light the fire under this. It’s breaking for sales and requests in a half dozen markets, including Miami, Houston, Memphis and Atlanta. BEHIND CLOSED DOORS - Terry & Anne (Towne House) This could easily be the next "Popsicles And Icicles." It’s not that bad.. .and has a hell of a lyric, that’s about as simple as the time. One never knows, SOMETHING IS WORRYING ME - Otis Redding (Volt) It’s this side in Macon and Augusta, Georgia. And Charleston, S. C. MfS GLENWOOD AVENUE - Pixies Three (Mercury) It’s #15 for Dick Wilson-WHC0-Orlando, Florida. Top five at WFUN. #19 at WDAK-Columbus, Georgia. CAN YOUR MONKEY DO THE DOG - Rufus Thomas (Stax) Should reach you by this reading. Tested excellent in Atlanta, and helped move the album well at holiday time. CUSTOM MACHINE - Beach Boys (Capitol) Latest word is, this will be their next single. Due out before the first of February. Play it from the album, and you’ll create a monster. I guarantee it. WHO NEEDS YOU - Bobby Paris (Chattahoochee) As far as I can remember, Frank Jolle-WMAK- Nashville was the first to break this. It’s a hit. #8 at WKGN-Khoxville. Selling in four other spots in Tennessee and also in Columbus. Georgia and Orlando, Florida. EVERY LITTLE MOVE YOU MAKE - Little Peggy March (RCA) Not bad, not great. But good enough to be picked and played and follow the pattern of her other records...strong reception. Then no play. Then everyone gets back on it. ABIGAIL BEECHER - Freddy Cannon (WB) I keep finding it harder and harder to judge his records. They all sound alike! #5 request for Danny Dee-WVLD-Valdosta, Georgia. Chuck Browning-WKGN-Khoxville has high hopes for it. I’m not sold on it. The proof will be in its performance. GOTTA FIND A WAY - Theresa Lindsey (Correc-Tone) Brand new to the South. It’s a top item in Detroit. May take a while to get off the ground, but _it will sooner or later. WHITE ON WHITE - Danny Williams (UA) You’ve heard of turntable hits. This sounds like one. Maybe it’ll turn out to be a seller, but that shouldn’t matter, since you’re not. in the record business. What you need is a ’sound’ and this has one. Don’t pass it up! HE WALKS LIKE A MAN - Jody Miller (Capitol) Dick Lawrence-WFLA-Tampa picks this older ~ side. It’s a helluva side. May take four or five weeks to determine its future. MILLER’S CAVE - Bobby Bare (RCA) It’ll do well in Georgia and Tennessee. Flip side is from the album reviewed on page four. And it’s got a chance. HARLEM SHUFFLE - Bob & Earl (Marc) Pat Hughes-WQXI-Atlanta feels this will go big with good exposure. It’s #16 at WPGC-Washington, D.C. One of the best charts in the country, compiled by Dean Griffith. Also a hot item for Billy Gene-NAUG-Augusta, Ga. WHAT NOW MY LOVE - Ben E King (Atco) Even when he doesn’t have a hit, he does well. I suggest you not judge this on one listen alone. Five or ten good doses of it will prove it contains hit ingredients. SEE THE FUNNY LITTLE CLOWN - Bobby Goldsboro (UA) I t’s this side. #1 for Steve Canyon- WNOR-Norfolk, Virginia. It may not go that high for you, büt~yöur missing a great side if you’re not with it. I keep telling you! CCMIN* ON - Bill Black (Hi) I i/amed you about instrumentals making a comeback. Get sei for his biggest hit since "Smokey." IF SOMEBODY TOLD YOU - Anna King (Smash) It’s not Rodgers and Hart, but it’s selling likr crazy. Turn the monitor down. You gotta play the right sounds to get the points.. „like ’em or not, and I know damn well a lot of people are passing this one up, just because they don’t hear it. Frankly, I’ve played it 50, 60, JO times and still can’t stand it. But, that doesn’t prove a thing. VAYA CON DIOS - Drifters (Atlantic) Not their best, but good enough to program. One of those items that will warm the middle of your chart, with a left field chance of going bigger. GOING GOING GONE - Brook Benton (Mercury) Sounds better every time. This should be a strong record. May take five or six weeks to achieve, but when you go on it, stay with it. It has it for the long pull. Just be patient. WOW WOW WEE (HE’S THE BOY FOR ME) - Angels (Smash) Sounds good. Certain to get many picks in the next two weeks. Then we shall see. -■ 4ft January 13, 1964 -4- Number Thirty Eight REVIEW AND COMMENT (Cont’d.) THINK NOTHING ABOUT IT - Gene Chandler (Constellation) Has that Butler-Impressions sound, mainly because it’s a Mayfield song and his material follows a pattern. R & B jocks will dig it. They will go with it first. Will keep you posted on any progress. His "Rainbow" and "Man,s Temptation" were very big in Dixie, thanks to the R & B play. HIS KISS - Betty Harris (jubilee) Taking off in Florida and Georgia. Bears watching... be aware of this side. I WON’T CRY - Clint West (instant) Top item in New Orleans and Chrleston, S. C. Trying hard to break in Atlanta. Anyone else? NEWS AND NOTES WEAK-Columbus and WQXI-Atlanta, Georgia enter the new year with bright-newly designed surveys. WFLA-Tampa, Florida is helping to promote a March of Dimes A1 Hirt Concert, set for the 10th. Charlie Brown leaves WGIV-Charlotte to join WKIX-Raleigh, N.C. Ed Ripley- WMBR-Jacksonville, Florida, an old Storz man, is busy giving his market its first taste of real formatted radio in many years. I ’ve heard a few hours of the ail-night show, and it swings. ALBUM PROGRAMMING THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF ANY WILLIAMS (Columbia) What1 s greater than great! Listen to this one. It’ll have you hunting for adequate adjectives to describe it. The fact that it contains his latest smash will help it become the next number one album. BEST: "" and "Let It Be Me." GOOD: "Wives And Lovers." CHUBBY’S FOLK ALBUM - Chubby Checker (Parkway) Between now and his next single would be a good time to play a cut or two from this album. BEST: "Everybody Loves Saturday Night." GOOD: "Ah, Si Mon Monie." 500 MITES AWAY FROM HOME - Bobby Bare (RCA) Similiar to his first for the label. For a country-oriented market, this is top notch. BEST: "What Kind Of Bird Is That." (Note to Chet Atkins: How about a Floyd Cramer instrumental of this?) GOOD: "Let Me Tell You About Mary." TIME TO THINK - Kingston Trio (Capitol) Sounds like it’ll be one of their biggest. One particular cut stands head and shoulders above the others. Play it, they h av e n ’t got a single out now. BEST: "The Patriot Game." EVERYTHING IS A-OK - Astronauts (RCA) If handled properly, this could become a very popular item. Sounds like any group anywhere...like the ones in your town that listen to you. This is the guitar sound the kids are currently shouting about. BEST: "Wine Wine Wine." GOOD: "Dream Lover." I REMEMBER BUDDY HOLLY - (Liberty) For my money this set is ten times better than either side of his newest single. You may disagree. BEST: "Raining In My Heart." (Several of our correspondents report request activity on this tune) GOOD: "True Love Ways" and "It Doesn’t Matter Anymore." THERE I ’VE SAID IT AGAIN - Bobby Vinton (Epic) Being rushed out this week. Like his "Blue On Blue" album, his next single will be from this one. You force it out. The South was responsible for "Blue Velvet" being a single. His next release is up to you. Al£o...(see previous issues for BEST and GOOD selections):
