PG 4 www.countryentertainmentusa.com Kenny Rogers Honored by Professional Photographers of America in Phoenix

Legendary Entertainer Receives Honorary Master of Photography Degree

Just three months ago, American icon Kenny Rogers was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. And now, last week in Phoenix, he picked up an- other career achievement, but this time it‟s in recognition of his other talent and passion - photography.

Rogers received an honorary master of photography degree from Professional Photographers of America (PPA) at its annual conference, Imaging USA, dur- ing the PPA Award & Degree ceremony, last Tuesday night, Jan. 14, at Sym- phony Hall in Phoenix, where more than 145 award and degree recipients were honored. Prior to the ceremony, he gave an exclusive live Q&A with conven- tion-goers, discussing his life and work. Rogers also shared photos from his forthcoming photography book, Places I‟ve Been, Things I‟ve Seen.

Imaging USA is the longest-running photography convention and expo in the nation. Up to 10,000 photographers attended, seeking education, inspiration, networking, exclusive parties and one of the nation‟s largest photography trade shows to help boost their business for the year ahead.

"We could see in his work that Mr. Rogers is an accomplished photographer, but when we approached him about the honorary master's degree, we were immediately impressed with his enthusiasm for photography," said PPA presi- dent, Ralph Romaguera Sr., M.Photog.Cr., CPP, API, F-ASP. "He's obviously well-known as an entertainer, but he truly is a remarkably talented photographer.”

“You start off doing something because you really love it, and it gives you great pleasure,” Rogers remarked. “With any luck at all, you get better. It was special to receive the highest honor that my photography has to offer. I felt a little intimidated but very flattered and somehow undeserving. What a thrill!”

Rhonda Vincent • Only Me • www.rhondavincent.com

Rhonda Vincent‟s new album entitled, Only Me contains two discs, the first spotlighting her bluegrass vocal prowess with songs like “Busy City” and “Only Me” (featuring Willie Nelson). The second CD spotlights her country side with classic songs like “Once A Day” and “Bright Lights & Country Music.” The production is exquisite and only rein- forces Rhonda‟s unmistakable and remarkable vocals.

Angela Dodson • Lonesome Time • www.angeladodson.com

This musical offering entitled Lonesome Time from Angela Dodson contains five songs, all written or co-written by Angela including the opening cut, “They Called Him Cash,” about the legendary Johnny Cash. These songs are a satisfying mixture of country rhythm, a bit of tradition and a little swing. From the pure toe-tappin‟ fun song, “Barnyard Jive” to the emotional ballad, “Trying To Matter,” Angela‟s vocals sparkle.

Shelby East • Dream On

Shelby East‟s album, Dream On, is like a breath of fresh air. Her passion for country mu- sic can be heard in the simple, honest delivery of her heartfelt vocals. Although the pro- duction is less than spectacular, she rises above and shines, particularly on songs like “Worth The Ache” and “When I Dance.” As Shelby continues to develop her vocal style, she should garner plenty of attention.

PG 7 www.countryentertainmentusa.com Why the 20th Century Country Music Artists will be remembered...

by CEU Editor, Roy Skropits

The 20th century was filled with extraordinary talented artists including Hank Williams, Sr., , Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and many others. These artists made country music fun and enjoyable; with great songs and exceptional talent. Some of the artists told stories while others actually lived it. And each artist had their own individ- ual style, image and persona; Elvis Presley was known as "the King of " or simply "the King," Johnny Cash the "Man In Black," Willie Nelson the "Red Head Stranger," Kris Kristofferson who landed a helicopter in Johnny Cash's yard, and Waylon Jennings known as "The Outlaw." Together, these four incredible artists - Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson formed the incredible band, The Highwaymen.

There were many great country artists like "No Show Jones" and Tammy Wynette "First Lady of Country Music" who were also known as one of the most successful duets. There were quite a few duet partners including & Conway Twitty, and Porter Wagoner and Johnny Cash & June Carter.

Some other great artists include Jack Greene "Jolly Greene Giant," Vern Gosdin "The Voice," Don Williams "The Gentle Giant," Merle Haggard "The Hag," "Bakersfield Sound," and Buck Owens and Roy Clark in "Hee Haw." Other great artists that come to mind are Roger Miller, Reba McEntire "Reba", Mel Tillis, Marty Rob- bins, Little Jimmy Dickens, Kitty Wells, Faron Young, Johnny Paycheck "Take This Job and Shove It", John Den- ver "Take Me Home, Country Roads", Mac Davis, Hank Williams, Jr., Travis Tritt, , Garth Brooks, Tracy Byrd, Tracy Lawrence, and George Strait "".

There are so many great country artists from the 20th century, but it is also important to give recognition to the re- cord labels who believed in them, the who wrote the hit songs and the radio DJ's that helped the truly talented artists get a break by playing their music. In closing, I think George Jones said it best when he said, "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes."

PG 8 www.countryentertainmentusa.com Tommy Roe Set For Return Performance

On Half Century Anniversary of ' Landmark First Concert in North America

Following their triumphant debut on the Ed Sullivan show on February 9, 1964, The Beatles very first concert in America took place at 8:31 p.m. on Tuesday, February 11, at the Washington Coliseum at 3rd & M Streets, NE. The sell-out show was attended by 8,092 screaming fans, who each paid ticket prices that ranged between $2 and $4. The audience included former Vice President Al Gore, then 16, and 18 year old, press pass wielding photographer Mike Mitchell, whose non-flash beautifully grainy photos of that evening en- capsulate the birth of a generation. This opened the door to the „British Inva- sion‟ at the dawn of one of America‟s most tumultuous eras, and would influ- ence the collective culture to this day.

50 years later, on Tuesday, February 11, 2014, this landmark concert will be reenacted as it occurred a half century ago on site at the historic Uline Arena (later known as The Washington Coliseum), with the iconic performance repli- cated by tribute band, Now. Opening the concert, as he did a half a century ago, the legendary Tommy Roe will be featured, in a live acoustic performance. Presented by the DC Preservation League and Douglas Development Corporation, tickets are on sale now at www.beatlesyesterdayandtoday.com at $45 for general admission standing tickets and $100 for seating. Doors will open at 6pm; with a selection of goodies from local food trucks and live music performed by Something Wild, an exhibition of Mike Mitchell‟s original photographs, which will be on sale with proceeds benefitting the DC Preservation League, as well as other surprises. The concert begins at the original time of 8:31 p.m. preceded by a 15-minute historic documentary featuring the history of The Washington Coliseum/Uline Arena from its concept and construction through its current and future incarnation.

Despite a raging east coast snowstorm, shortly before noon on the 11th, The Beatles, legendary DJ Murray the K, and select members of the press arrived at Manhattan's Penn Station and boarded an old Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac railroad sleeper car named the King George headed for Washington, DC. The train ride gave the Beatles and the press an opportunity to interact by the time it pulled into Washington‟s Union Station at 3:09 p.m. The Beatles opened with "Roll Over Beethoven." The Chiffons, Tommy Roe, the Righteous Brothers, Caravelles, and Jay and the Americans were also on the bill.

When The Beatles climbed onto the stage just at 8:31 p.m. and even before they played a note, fans began screaming and photographers started taking a barrage of photos. The first American crowd also followed the British tradition of throwing jellybeans onto the stage. The screaming was so loud and hysterically persistent throughout the entire con- cert - and then - about 35 minutes after the Beatles climbed onto the stage, it was over.

About Tommy Roe Tommy is a multifaceted international artist who wrote, co-wrote, and recorded, six top ten hits between 1962, and 1969, more than any other single artist/ during this period of the 60's, with four RIAA certified gold re- cords, and two of his hits, "SHEILA" and "DIZZY," topping the Billboard chart at #1. Tommy had a total of eleven records reach the Billboard top forty, and twenty three Billboard top 100 chart records. With similar chart success in England, and throughout Europe, Asia, and Australia, Tommy is considered one of the early pioneers of American pop culture. Born Thomas David Roe, on May 9, 1942, in , , Roe, who is sometimes known as the "father of bubble -gum music," has sold more than 60 million records, including six Top 10 hits, and four Gold Re- cords.

PG 10 www.countryentertainmentusa.com Stella Parton

by Brenda L. Madden

Stella Parton‟s new CD, Resurrection although aptly titled may come as a surprise to those familiar with her past re- leases. Throughout her career, Stella has never been fenced in by invisible musical boundaries or succumbed to pressure to homogenize her music, so honestly it should not be a shock that Stella‟s found a dance groove that has breathed life back into some of her biggest country hits like “Danger Of A Stranger,” I Want To Hold You In My Dreams Tonight” and “Valley Of Desire.”

Stella‟s music has always been simply Stella, honest and authentic - and Resurrec- tion is no exception. Included on the two CDs are twenty mixes by some of the fin- est remixers on the dance music scene, each track perfectly highlighting her distinc- tive, spirited and luscious vocals. To complete the metamorphosis for this project, Stella penned three new dance songs, “New Lover,” “I Reach Out To Touch You” and “Trouble On The Line” which are quickly becoming some of her most re- quested songs.

This album not only allows Stella to explore and expand her musical expression, but to also develop a new onstage per- sona. Debuting her album live at TEN Atlanta to a standing room only crowd, Stella comments, “What a thrill. I‟m having so much fun with the new music and the new look – I plan to wear a different color wig every show, so look out – it‟s like a costume party for me!!!”

A diverse entertainer and recording artist, no matter whether performing country, gospel, bluegrass, show tunes or dance, Stella Parton is the real deal!

If you were to enter the Ryman alone, At the right time of night, You might hear the echoes of Sam Jones Extolling the virtues of temperance, Or Enrico Caruso reaching a high C. Then might come the sound Of Earl Scruggs and Bill Monroe creating A genre of immortal music. Faint screams from enchanted women Fill the room as Elvis takes the stage, And Johnny Cash comes next As your skin feels phantom warmth, A ring of fire surging all around. Hank Williams Sr. cools the air Singing of a cheating heart, But the warmth returns with laughter As Minnie Pearl and Roy Acuff perform, But then it happens, The sound of March 16, 1974 Silence (at least from these ghosts.)
