Nigerian Values and Contemporary Popular Music: a New Look
NIGERIAN VALUES AND CONTEMPORARY POPULAR MUSIC: A NEW LOOK Ebele Ojukwu, Elizabeth Obielozie & Chinyere Esimone http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/og.v12i s1.7 Abstract Music is among the ancient art forms in Africa that has flourished as old as man since ancient African society did not separate their everyday activities from their music. Most music performances in Africa go beyond the frontiers of mere entertainment activity but are geared more towards socio-cultural dimensions due to its ability to socialize, consolidate values and other utilitarian exigencies. In the recent times, the younger generations of Africa seem not to have much enthusiasm for their cultural values due to undue foreign influences. Nigerian contemporary pop music is playing an increasingly pivotal role in shaping the continent’s music scene. This paper seeks to portray contemporary pop music as a paradigmatic approach to enliven and perpetuate positive cultural as well as moral values in the Nigerian youths. The paper argues that contemporary Nigerian music can be employed to connect the African heritage to the world and African youths in diaspora will also have the opportunity to hear, touch, feel and create the musical art even in a distant homeland. It concludes by pointing out the need for Nigerian government to turn towards the entertainment industry and indeed the music industry with the objective of identifying possible avenues for growth in the industry, and for cultural sustainability in Nigeria. Keywords: Nigerian values, Music industry, Contemporary popular music, Youths and society Introduction Before the advent of colonialism in Nigeria, the Igbo traditional community, maintain highly and uncontaminated cultural and moral values. -
‘American Idol’ Cast-Off MK Nobilette Hopes To
‘American Idol’ Cast-off MK Nobilette Hopes to “Be a Good Role Model” for the LGBT Community By Louisa Gonzales MK Nobilette made headlines early on during this season of American Idol when she became the first openly gay contestant. Of the attention on her sexual orientation instead of her singing skills, she says, “I was definitely a little taken aback at first, but I get that it plays a role. I’m a singer, and I’m also gay. I felt like it was important to address that. I’m very proud of it and open about it.” Although her time on the show has ended, she’s hopeful that she can continue to be a source of inspiration for other members of the LGBT community. “I want to be a good role model for other queer people who are afraid to come out or think they can’t do something as big as American Idol. I really hope I influence a lot of people.” Related Link: ‘American Idol’ Contestant Ben Briley Sings to Better His Family’s Future One person who she’s certainly inspired is her girlfriend Casey Ellis, who is also a singer. “It was great to have her on my side for all of this. It was really great,” the California native said of her partner who she calls “wife” on her Twitter profile. For same-sex couples struggling to find their place in the world, Nobilette encourages them to talk to their loved ones. “And just be proud of yourself. Remind yourself that, no matter what happens, you still have you, and that’s the most important thing.” So what’s next for the singer? First, she’ll be going home to San Francisco to spend time with her family and friends before heading out on the American Idol summer tour with the other top 10 contestants. -

KYLE PARK BIO 2013 His career is young. His past is impressive. His future seemingly has plenty more in store. That’s why Texas singer/songwriter Kyle Park, one of the spark plugs on the Southwestern tour circuit, has titled his new album Beggin’ For More. It’s the fourth album in a self-made career in which Park served as both the artist and the record label. More is the key word in the title. He earned his first No. 1 single in the middle of recording the album, when “The Night Is Young” topped the Texas radio charts, and he naturally heard fans begging for more music. But it also finds him covering more creative turf. Beggin’ displays an expansive lyrical bent, ranging from the playful Internet-age commentary of “Tagged” to the introspective spirituality of “You Make Me Believe.” Stylistically, Beggin’ contains more traditional country than he’s inserted on an album before, but it also shows him pushing the envelope on several tracks. U2-style guitar sounds and unexpected chord changes populate “The Night Is Young,” and a muscular foundation on “True Love” is part danceable soul music, part Wallflowers’ “One Headlight.” “I hate to go to a show and the first song sounds like the other songs, and the show just keeps going and seems to flatline,” Park explains. “It’s cool to have different styles of songs. Going back to my first record, I’ve got a Cajun song and a ‘60s song, and all kinds of different grooves. I think that’s key.” It’s one of many reasons that Park is an artist on the upswing. -
