What do you do if your partner is becoming too controlling?

Cupid’s Advice:

Loving someone for who they are is part of being in a relationship and sometimes you may brush a few things under the rug because you are accepting who they are. Nevertheless, there is one specific behavior you cannot ignore — controlling. Cupid has some tips on how to handle a controlling partner:

1. Take notice: There was a point in time when you may have thought your partner ordering food for you at a restaurant was a sign of him or her knowing what you like, or maybe you thought it was adorable when they picked out certain outfits (on a daily basis) for you to wear. However, the reasoning behind these “kind” actions soon become clear and you realize it is the need of control your partner must have. Do not overlook these signs. Instead, stand on your own two and let your significant other know you can handle your own. Or maybe even turn the tables onto him or her. Show them what it is like to constantly have their order placed before they have the chance to speak, or tell them what and what not to wear (yes, you should definitely take it to this level). As conniving as it may seem, your primary goal is getting your point across, thoroughly.

2. Communicate: Talk with your partner about any problems that have stemmed from their controlling behavior. Chances are they do not realize they are being officious. Take into mind their feelings before lashing out. Speak in calm manner that is not rooted by anger or frustration. You may even find a reason as to why they are obsessively controlling.

3. Work with your partner: Give them a few tries to adapt to actually not being controlling. If they begin to do something that resembles the behavior, stop them. You may have to repeat this quite often until they get it right. It requires you to be patient and understanding — your significant other may have a very dominant personality and is willing to ease that for the sake of your relationship.

’ Contestant on Relationships: “Keep Pushing Each Other to Become Stronger”

By Liz Kim

Dexter Roberts, 22, stood out on this season ofAmerican Idol, not just because of his smooth country crooning but because of his easygoing demeanor and always present smile. Nothing seemed to shake him, and even after landing in the bottom two this week, he took it all in stride. “I just don’t know what happened this week,” he shares. “I had a great time on the show, and I know I’ll have a great time on tour.”

For Wednesday night’s performances, the contestants picked out each other’s songs, and despite the preconceived notion that competition brings out the worst in people, all of the singers looked out for each other. “It was easy to pick songs for each other because we know what kind of artists we want to be and we didn’t want to jeopardize each other.” C.J. Harris picked “Muckalee Creek Water” by Luke Bryan for Roberts, and although he got generally positive reviews, he was ultimately eliminated.

The Fayette, Alabama native won fans over with his Southern twang, and despite getting some criticism about diction and pronunciation, the singer says that’s just who he is — but he’ll work on it. Ever the perfectionist, he actually wishes he had gotten tougher criticism. “I wanted the judges to be harsh on me because criticism helps you become a better artist,” he says. “I told C.J. that I love criticism because it drives me more. It puts fuel onto my fire and makes me want to do better each week.”

Roberts got particularly close to fellow contestants and Harris, but Harris and Roberts had already been friends for over five years before Idol. They met during spring break in Panama City and bonded over music. Neither friend told the other that he was auditioning for the show because both assumed the other would be there. Roberts made it through first, and after lending Harris his guitar, the good luck must have rubbed off because both friends went on to Hollywood. “It’s just a great experience to get closer and to make it this far.”

Being southern gentlemen, they never let competition get in the way of their friendship. “We’ve always had a great chemistry with each other; he’s like a brother to me. We try to help each other out and fix each other’s technique.”

Not only did Roberts get to go on his Idol journey with a close friend, but he also met his girlfriend Savannah Coker at auditions. Coker, part of the band Sweet Tea Trio, didn’t make it to Hollywood but showed her love by being in the audience with Roberts’s mother. “She’s been nothing but great support, and she’s been behind me the whole way,” he gushes. “Along with my family, her family has also supported me so much.”

When two people in a relationship are chasing the same dream, jealousy and hurt feelings can get in the way, but this couple only wants the best for each other. “Any relationship takes work. Just go in and keep standing by each other and pushing each other to become stronger. Have fun and enjoy life!”

Although he may be done performing on the Idol stage this season, don’t count Roberts out just yet. He has special plans for the Idol finale and the upcoming summer tour. “I’m gonna try to come out and do something different. I’m going to surprise you!”

By Maria Darbenzio

New mother and alum DeAnna Pappas Stagliano and her husband Stephen Stagliano welcomed a beautiful baby girl into their family on February 6th. The former reality star recently caught up with Celebrity Baby Scoop to share an inside look at Addison Marie’s nursery and to talk about how she’s adjusted to being a mom.

Related Link: ‘Bachelorette’ Alum Welcomes Baby Girl CBS: Congratulations on the arrival of your daughter Addison Marie! How is she doing? And how are you adjusting to new motherhood?

DPS: “Addison is doing amazing – already sleeping through the night! Such a big girl. The past two months have just flown by. It’s like I blinked and she grew into a baby instead of a newborn. So crazy.

I am loving motherhood — it is seriously the best thing I have ever done with my life. I’m obsessed with her – I can’t stop staring at her or kissing her. Motherhood is such a blessing and I am so grateful to be experiencing this. The transition has been flawless. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and I miss her so much even though she is just in the next room in her crib. The magnitude of the love I feel is so hard to put into words.”

CBS: How did you come up with Addison Marie’s name? Was it a tough decision for you and Stephen?

DPS: “Stephen and I loved the name Addison way before we were even thinking about getting pregnant. The name is just so beautiful and sophisticated. Her middle name, Marie, is passed down. It was my grandmother’s, my mother’s, and my middle name. It is something I wanted to share with my own daughter. I wanted her to know and have a piece of my mother.”

CBS: Tell us all about baby Addison’s beautiful nursery. What was the inspiration behind the soft pink and gray room? Have you always had a nursery like this in mind for your first child?

DPS: “Addison’s nursery is our favorite room in the house! When we were planning out her nursery, I knew I wanted to decorate it in soft pink and soft gray. The gray took some convincing with Stephen, but once he saw it, he loved it too. Choosing the bedding with Carousel Designs made it all complete. It was so easy when making the decision because we used their online tool. They had the perfect pink and gray chevron bedding that we just fell in love with. I found some vintage pieces of furniture that Stephen and I restored for her room that just fit perfectly.

CBS: What’s your favorite component/piece in the nursery?

DPS: “Speaking practically, I love her Poopoose changing pad. It is ‘mom invented’ which I love. The changing pad has a belt to strap Addison in so she doesn’t roll off and get hurt. I’m also a huge fan of my Bobee diaper dispenser. It makes storing diapers easy and stylish so I am not cluttering up Addison’s dresser or drawers with all the extra diapers.”

Haylie Duff Is Engaged to Boyfriend Matt Rosenberg By Sanetra Richards

‘Tis the season for wedding bells! Actress and singer Haylie Duff announced her engagement to boyfriend Matt Rosenburg on Thursday, April 3rd. According to UsMagazine.com, the 29-year- old posted an Instagram photo of the two smiling and her showing off her nice sized rock, with the caption reading, “The future Mrs. Rosenburg #Love @mr_sts.” She went onto share the news with her food blog’s fans: “This week has seriously just become the best week of my life! As if announcing The Real Girl’s Kitchen tv show wasn’t enough, Matt just took me by total surprise and proposed…on April Fool’s Day of all days! The moment was genuine and sweet (like him!) and I couldn’t wait to say yes!”

What are three unique proposal ideas?

Cupid’s Advice:

Planning a wedding proposal is far from an easy task. Just like the wedding, it takes preparation (and lots of meditation). You have to strategically map out every single detail, from who is going to be involved, where it is going to be, and what day! Not to mention, you have to keep it a secret. Before you can worry about all of this, thinking of how you want to ask for your partner’s hand in marriage is most important. Cupid has a few cute ideas to make things a little bit easier:

1. The museum: Ask your local museum if you could place an enlarged framed photo of you and your partner in the photography section with the proposal as the caption. Take your significant other to the city’s museum for what will seem to be a regular date. Look at the various pieces and critique each, as usual. Once you get to your ‘proposal piece,’ wait for his or her reaction as they read the picture’s caption.

2. Write ‘note’ cards: Send or leave your love sweet note cards throughout the day, whether it is of a favorite quote or a reminder of their beauty. Do about five to ten cards. On the final one, ask for their hand. Priceless moment!

3. Deliver it in the mailbox: Make sure your significant other is the one to check the mail the day you want to propose. Set the ring in the mailbox beforehand. Watch him or her as they open the mailbox to see the box among the other envelopes. Voilà ! Here is your chance to propose.

By Melanie Mar

Butterflies in your stomach, questions running through your mind, and nervous energy are all natural reactions before heading out on any first date. The first date is an icebreaker, not a marriage interview, so sit back and enjoy! The beauty of a first date is that, if it goes poorly, you will most likely get over it quickly. Remind yourself that your best self is relaxed and confident. Follow the tips below to reduce your first date anxiety and set yourself up for fun.

1. Keep it short and sweet: The focus of your first meet-up is getting a feel for the other person, so stick with the basics. A first date is like an appetizer, not a main course. Don’t go into every detail of your past relationships, be too flirty, or reveal too much about yourself.

A good rule of thumb is to keep your date to a maximum of two hours; a lot can be covered in this short amount of time. An hour at the local coffee shop with a short walk afterwards, a shared dessert at a fun new spot, or an early dinner are all simple ways to keep things light. Always leave the other person wanting to know more about you!

2. Have fun: Lighthearted conversation is key. Just enjoy the time as you would with a new friend. You certainly don’t need a super extravagant or creative plan for your first meeting. Try to look at the person across from you from a place of playfulness. Laughter is very attractive! This is a new, exciting stage in your life, so focus your intentions on having fun.

3. Just breathe: Your mind is naturally going to be overactive with pre-date jitters. Listen to some upbeat music, go shopping, or even exercise beforehand. This activity will help get rid of all your restless energy. Getting your body and mind centered is a big part of feeling mentally prepared for your date. Plus, people are their most authentic selves when they’re relaxed. Go with the flow, breathe, and take it slow. By learning to have a nice, stress-free time, you will allow the true you to come out naturally, making you even more beautiful and attractive.

4. Be the natural you: When you’re concerned with finding the right partner or overly-focused on making a good first impression, you often end up being awkward. Trying too hard results in a false sense of self. When you feel comfortable with yourself, others will feel at ease with you too.

One of the biggest reasons people are anxious preparing for first dates is because they are overly concerned about how they will be perceived. You think, “Will this person think I’m funny or attractive enough?” Remind yourself that the someone who is meant to be with you long-term will like you even if you show up a little nervous!

5. Be realistic: It’s easy to get carried away by a fantasy you have created in your head. Thinking of this new person as a potential fiancé or even marriage material can set you up for a total letdown. A date that has had too much pre- conceived thought or imagination added to it is almost certain to disappoint you. We’re all human and far less than perfect, so try to keep an open mind and heart.

It can be easy to waste time worrying about going out on a first date, whether it’s with someone you’ve met online, have been talking to over the phone, or have even already met in person. Try practicing some or all of these tips the next time you prepare for a first date, and you’ll feel more confident and relaxed as a result!

Author Jennifer Buhl Talks About Her Time Spent ‘Shooting Stars’ Interview and written by Whitney Johnson. Transcription by Louisa Gonzales.

Jennifer Buhl spent three years in Los Angeles working as a paparazza (the word for a female singular paparazzi), and as a top-earning photographer, she was one of only five women in an industry dominated by men. Her work was published in People magazine, TMZ, and E! News, to name a few. Having since escaped the California lifestyle to move to Boulder, Colorado, and run a family photography business, she took the opportunity to reflect on her time in the field and wrote her new book, Shooting Stars: My Unexpected Life Photographing Hollywood’s Most Famous. Read on for our exclusive interview with the author and find out more about her experiences with the rich and famous!

You write about how paparazzi are often portrayed as being the villain, but in reality, they aren’t the bad guy. Has this perspective affected the way your friends and family viewed your career? I think everybody outside of Los Angeles kind of thought I had this cool new profession, but people in LA sort of have an attitude about their celebrities — like, “How dare you?” The people who are most offended by my profession are the people who follow celebrities the most…because they feel like they’re friends with them. And, of course, it’s kind of ironic because they know all about them because of the photographs that paparazzi take.

It’s important for people to understand that, a lot of the time, celebrities actually want to be photographed. It’s also good to note that paparazzi are just the photographers; we’re not the buyers (magazines, blogs, etc.) or the consumers. Honestly, I don’t really care that much about celebrities; I was just doing my job!

You mentioned that your favorite experience as a paparazzi was one with David Beckham. Can you elaborate?

David is one of those celebrities that I put in a different category — like this mammoth, mammoth star. He’s like Tom Cruise or Brangelina. They operate in their own world, and they always have a ton of security around them. They’ve really changed their lifestyle because of their fame, so it’s hard to get a good shot of them. You rarely see pictures of David just out and about because he knows how to avoid us (which isn’t hard to do). So to have an encounter with him is a really special thing.

One day, I followed him to soccer practice knowing that I probably wouldn’t get a photograph because it’d be on his terms. He had two security guards with him; he saw me following him and kind of waved at the car I was in. Then, he pulls up to a drive-thru Starbucks window — and I’m like, “Did he do that for me?!” We were both in line and had our windows down, so we started chatting.

He knew I was a paparazzi and I was following him, but I didn’t pull my camera out because there was no shot. All he had to do was put his hand over his face, and his security would’ve come running. We just talked for a while, and at the end of the conversation, he let me have a picture. It wasn’t an amazing photo — he was just grabbing his drink from the window — but for me, it was a really special moment.

Were there any celebrity couples that you enjoyed shooting?

I photographed the Beckham’s on the soccer field or out as a family. But interestingly, the paparazzi rarely follow a man by himself. Unless he’s with his partner or kids or has a big bouquet of flowers in his hand, we typically focus on women. It’s women who mostly read magazines, and we really want to see what other women look like — what they’re wearing, how they’ve done their hair, who they’re dating.

As an example, I was sitting on Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck’s house one day — that’s a paparazzi term for “staking out” — along with several other paparazzi. Ben pulls out in his car, and nobody moves. We were all waiting for Jen.

Related Link: Lessons from Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck

To shift gears a bit, we wanted to ask your thoughts about the recent petition from couples like Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard who are trying to stop photographs of their kids from being published.

Well, I think they are barking up the wrong tree when they are talking to paparazzi. But I actually think Kristen and Dax are going about it the right way; they’re trying to target the people who print the pictures. Those are the deciders and consumers of what the paparazzi do. So if they want those pictures to stop printing, they need to talk to those people, and I think some of the media has agreed to it.

I don’t think the paparazzi really care that much because, frankly, the publications and blogs are going to use our photos no matter what. Whether you buy the ones with Kristen and Dax’s kid or you buy one with somebody else, it doesn’t matter.

And how has the insurgence of social media affected the paparazzi’s careers?

Social media has given celebrities a lot of power. Our biggest competitors today are celebrities themselves. And that’s because they’re tweeting and Instagramming their own photos that the magazines and blogs can use for free. Publishers don’t really care where the photos come from as long as they’re good pictures, and the celebrities love it because they’re able to drive their own media and their own look.

On a personal note, as a working mother, do you have any tips for our readers who are trying to balance parenthood with their careers?

I guess my biggest piece of advice is to look into attachment parenting — it really works for me. I would also say that, if possible, it’s really important to have a flexible work schedule. It totally changed my life and just allows me to be a mother. If you read the book, then you know that motherhood is the most important thing in my life. So for me, it comes first. I still need to work, and I still love to work, so I put myself in a situation where I am able to be a working mother.

What are some ways to plan a private wedding ceremony?

Cupid’s Advice:

You’re ready to marry the person you love, but you’re not sure if you want to make a huge event out of it. Some people prefer a quieter, intimate ceremony. How do you go about planning something smaller without hurting anyone’s feelings? Cupid is here to help:

1. Tell family and close friends: Only tell your loved ones about your plan to exchange vows. You won’t hurt anyone’s feelings if you keep details about your upcoming nuptials relatively quiet. Let your family and friends know you won’t be changing your mind about the simplicity of your wedding, and you would appreciate it if they kept all ceremony and reception details to themselves.

2. Location: Choose a location that would be appropriate for a small wedding. Look at places such as gardens, public parks and farms. If you already have a venue picked out, make sure it’s something your partner likes as well.

3. Stay off social media: Don’t drop any subtle hints on your Facebook, Instagram or Twitter account. Until you walk down the aisle, it might be best to stay off all social media sites. You might accidentally spill some private information with just a simple “like”.

‘American Idol’ Contestant : “I Didn’t Change Who I Am At All”

By Liz Kim

Twenty-one year old Rochelle York — better known as Majesty Rose — was an early standout on American Idol. Her quirkiness charmed fans, and her diverse tastes in music always surprised the judges. “When I picked my songs, I wasn’t really thinking about what America likes; I was thinking about what I like,” she said. “Yes, America was voting for me, but it was really my time to present myself, and so I thought about what made me most happy and most comfortable.”

Related Link: ‘American Idol’ Contestant MK Nobilette Talks About Being a Role Model The singer credits the support of her family for keeping her strong each week and says it was really hard to be away from them. While she formed close bonds with her fellow contestants, she shared, “It’s just hard to be around people you don’t really know that well, so it felt like I was alone. I really needed a heartfelt hug from my family, but I’d call them a lot, and we would pray together before shows.”

Before Idol, Rose was living in Goldsboro, North Carolina and working as a preschool teacher at the Goldsboro Family YMCA. She became the pride of her town, and every week, they held viewing parties to cheer for her.

It’s this community that the star is looking forward to most now that’s she done on the Idol stage. “I’m really excited to go back home and see my friends and family. I’m going to visit my kids, but I don’t know if I’m going to be a teacher — hopefully, they saved my spot!”

Rose has big plans for her future — but first, she’s ready for some R&R. “I’m glad I’ll have a little downtime to just rest. After the tour, I’d like to do so many things, like being a commercial model,” she explained. “I want to do a lot more music, and I’d also like to do some acting. People tell me that they could see me on Broadway, and I think that would be really fun.” Plus, she wants to continue to be a positive role model for younger girls and spread the message of self- acceptance.

True to her quirky personality, Rose has some unconventional ideas on how her future album will sound. “I think it would be a mix of the acoustic stuff; I really love Coldplay,” she explained. “But there will also be happy music like Janelle Monae. I want it to be really inspiring — you’ll laugh one minute and cry the next because it’ll be a roller coaster.”

For now, thought, she’s focused on the summer tour and is looking forward to reuniting with her Idol friends. Rose said, “I’m excited to get back with the contestants because I made a lot of close friendships, and we’re going to get even closer on the tour; we’re going to be like a family.” Of course, she didn’t forget her Rosebuddies. “I’m excited for my fans to be able to see me again. I’m just so grateful to have all the support from them, and I hope to make more fans.”

While she may not have won the competition, Rose is very proud of how far she has come. “I learned so much about myself. I learned that I’m a much stronger person than I thought,” she said. “I persevered through so much. It’s easy for somebody from a small town to change, and that’s one thing I can say — I didn’t change who I am at all.”

Although Rose isn’t looking for a romantic relationship right now, she still has a pretty good idea of what she wants. “I would look for somebody who’s like me, somebody who’s level- headed. I’d like to be with somebody who knows where they are going in life.”

Celebrity Couple Predictions: Mary-Kate Olsen, Eva Mendes and Amal Alamuddin By Shoshi

For today’s column, let’s take a look at three celebrity couples that are on top of the media’s radar– whether it’s because of an odd pairing, an on-and-off-again relationship, or a surprising new coupling:

Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy: The former child star turned fashion designer is rumored to be engaged to the banker, although she has yet to officially confirm the news. When this engagement was first announced, there was a collective “ew” heard around the world.

Olsen is 27 years old, while Sarkozy is 44 years old — but one can say that Olsen has experienced a lot in her 27 years. Therefore, their 17-year age difference shouldn’t be a major factor in this relationship. It’s the visual of seeing them together that makes people stop and ponder a bit. She’s a petite youthful-looking pixie, while he’s over a foot taller than her and looks every bit of his four decades. In other words, he looks more like her daddy than her fiancé. Seeing the two of them with his teenage daughter definitely makes you do a double take! Since Sarkozy and Olsen have been together, she seems to be completely drama-free. The two already live together in a six- million-dollar home in New York City, and the fashion designer has shown how she will be as a stepmom to Sarkozy’s two children. So the next step appears to be marriage. I can see them getting married secretly and having a baby together before the relationship hits a major bump.

Related Link: Mary-Kate Olsen Is Engaged to Olivier Sarkozy

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling: Are they together or not? That’s the question. The two of them haven’t been photographed together for over three months. In the midst of the break-up rumors, she has been seen walking his dog, while he has been seen driving her car and peeking over her fence. One report even had the actor rekindling his relationships with his The Notebook co-star Rachel McAdams, who he admitted was his first love.

Maybe the twosome are just having fun and like to keep us all guessing. It could also be a way to get people interested in Gosling’s directorial debut How to Catch A Monster, which Mendes stars in.

In looking at their relationship energy, I feel like these two can’t figure out what they’re doing. Either they commit to each other 100 percent and get married or buy a house together, or they split and move on. Part of why they’re staying together is their comfort level.

Also, might I add that it looks like things in the bedroom are quite fabulous. Let’s keep it real: Good loving will make anyone stay around a little bit longer!

George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin: It has finally happened: Clooney is dating a woman who has beautyand brains. This isn’t to throw any shade at the lovely ladies he has dated in the past, but his new girlfriend has some major girl geek credentials. Alamuddin’s resume includes a career in international law, fluency in French and Arabic, and a degree from Oxford. Plus, she’s an author.

Some say that she’s way out of Clooney’s league. While the actor is no Oxford grad, he is deeper than some of his former dating choices. Let’s not forget that he normally makes his intellectual statements in the movies that he produces and directs.

There is speculation that he staged the recent photos of the couple in New York because he’s upset that his ex Stacy Keibler got married and is expecting a baby less than a year after their break-up. I won’t go so far as to say that Clooney cried over Keibler’s big news, but it bruised his ego a bit. He’s used to his exes looking a little pitiful in the press when he drops them, whereas the beautiful blonde rebounded with a win.

His relationship with Alamuddin will have a typical Clooney run. She will accompany him to events, vacations, and other high-profile outings. However, she will bore of him versus him getting bored with her. She’s a woman of many layers; Clooney picked a lady who will give him a run for his money.

‘American Idol’ Cast-off MK Nobilette Hopes to “Be a Good Role Model” for the LGBT Community

By Louisa Gonzales

MK Nobilette made headlines early on during this season of American Idol when she became the first openly gay contestant. Of the attention on her sexual orientation instead of her singing skills, she says, “I was definitely a little taken aback at first, but I get that it plays a role. I’m a singer, and I’m also gay. I felt like it was important to address that. I’m very proud of it and open about it.”

Although her time on the show has ended, she’s hopeful that she can continue to be a source of inspiration for other members of the LGBT community. “I want to be a good role model for other queer people who are afraid to come out or think they can’t do something as big as American Idol. I really hope I influence a lot of people.”

Related Link: ‘American Idol’ Contestant Ben Briley Sings to Better His Family’s Future

One person who she’s certainly inspired is her girlfriend Casey Ellis, who is also a singer. “It was great to have her on my side for all of this. It was really great,” the California native said of her partner who she calls “wife” on her Twitter profile.

For same-sex couples struggling to find their place in the world, Nobilette encourages them to talk to their loved ones. “And just be proud of yourself. Remind yourself that, no matter what happens, you still have you, and that’s the most important thing.”

So what’s next for the singer? First, she’ll be going home to San Francisco to spend time with her family and friends before heading out on the American Idol summer tour with the other top 10 contestants. There’s no doubt she’ll be taking her newfound gumption with her on the road: “Before American Idol, I was still a performer and a singer, but I never thought that being a musician was an achievable goal for myself as a career. I think, through this process, I realized that’s the only thing that I want to do. I’m definitely going to make that happen.”

For the remaining contestants battling for that number one spot, she has this piece of advice — something that she learned from judge Harry Connick Jr. “Just really sell yourself,” she says. “Live every performance like it’s your last and really make sure that you want to be there, exactly like Harry said. Prove to the judges that you deserve to be on that stage.”
