ANDREW SACKETT FUN IN ACAPULCO? The Politics of Development on the Mexican Riviera I can think of no place on the face of the earth that can surpass Acapulco. I have heard world-travelers liken it to the Italian Riviera and one say reverently, ‘‘Heaven is only a suburb of Acapulco.’’ MEXICAN NATIONAL AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION, TRAVEL GUIDE FOR MEXICO, 1947 People without scruples who are trying to enrich themselves . are developing projects to throw us out from our community, from our plots, from the homes of our families, because we are poor. TELEGRAM FROM RUPERTO RODRÍGUEZ, SECRETARY OF THE COMISARIO EJIDAL DE SANTA CRUZ, ACAPULCO, TO PRESIDENT MIGUEL ALEMÁN, JUNE 24, 1947 he year 1947 marks a watershed in the history of Acapulco. As postwar Ttourism began to boom, the Mexican state became heavily involved in the town’s development. This development, which changed Acapulco from a dilapidated port town to a modern resort, could not have occurred without the intervention of the state. Throughout this process, the interests of hotel developers and tourists were paramount, and those of the people of Aca- pulco were secondary. This was not an accident—the state carefully planned and controlled the development of Acapulco. One of Mexico’s premier ar- chitects designed the urban plan; the state placed control over all aspects of urban development, from zoning to commerce on the beaches, in the hands of a federal agency called the Junta Federal de Mejoras Materiales de Aca- pulco (Acapulco Federal Board for Material Improvements, hereafter jfmm or Junta Federal), and the Agrarian Department, under orders from Presi- dent Miguel Alemán himself, expropriated the required land from ejidita- From Holiday in Mexico by Berger, Dina.

  • Rock 'N' Roll 'N' Film
E:\M55\COURSES\FILM\FilmrockL.fm 2000-08-23 12:45 1 Rock 'n' roll 'n' film Provisional text for module Music and the Moving Image 1 [MUSI 223] Dr Philip Tagg at the Institute of Popular Music, University of Liverpool. Rock 'n' rebellion Rock was even slower than jazz to become film underscore. To this day, rock in feature film has largely retained the functions of providing local, historical or social colour, often as set numbers and source music, as in the famous potted rock guitar style history scene from Back to the Future (1985). These 'non-underscore' functions can be heard and seen all through the history of rock in film. Although Elia Kazan used Rosenmann's Hollywood symphonics in the James Dean movies East of Eden (1954) and Rebel Without A Cause (1955) — probably because film noir bebop beatniks had not yet been oust- ed by rocking college-goers and because both films had a psychological, rather than sociological, angle (individual rather than flock story) — , rock started to become the standard musical signal for youth, youth problems and youth groups (often semi-criminal as 'juvenile delinquents') in the mid fifties. The initial breakthrough was probably using Bill Haley's 'Rock Around The Clock' in Blackboard Jungle (1955), this rock = youth rebellion equa- tion being more substantially exploited for entertainment box office purpos- es in Jailhouse Rock (Presley 1957). The same sort of subcultural opposition connection takes a more critical turn in the hippie era with bike movies like Easy Rider (1969) in which music by Steppenwolf, Hendrix and The Band ac- companies dope-smoking drop-outs played by Peter Fonda and Dennis Hop- per on their endless chopper rides through hostile and bigotedly 'normal' (what German rockers call stinknormal) southern states of the U.S.A.
