Rules and Options The author has attempted to draw as much as possible from the guidelines provided in the 5th edition Players Handbooks and Dungeon Master's Guide. Statistics for weapons listed in the Dungeon Master's Guide were used to develop the damage scales used in this book. Interestingly, these scales correspond fairly well with the values listed in the d20 Modern books. Game masters should feel free to modify any of the statistics or optional rules in this book as necessary. It is important to remember that Dungeons and Dragons abstracts combat to a degree, and does so more than many other game systems, in the name of playability. For this reason, the subtle differences that exist between many firearms will often drop below what might be called a "horizon of granularity." In D&D, for example, two pistols that real world shooters could spend hours discussing, debating how a few extra ounces of weight or different barrel lengths might affect accuracy, or how different kinds of ammunition (soft-nosed, armor-piercing, etc.) might affect damage, may be, in game terms, almost identical. This is neither good nor bad; it is just the way Dungeons and Dragons handles such things. Who can use firearms? Firearms are assumed to be martial ranged weapons. Characters from worlds where firearms are common and who can use martial ranged weapons will be proficient in them. Anyone else will have to train to gain proficiency— the specifics are left to individual game masters. Optionally, the game master may also allow characters with individual weapon proficiencies to trade one proficiency for an equivalent one at the time of character creation (e.g., monks can trade shortswords for one specific martial melee weapon like a war scythe, rogues can trade hand crossbows for one kind of firearm like a Glock 17 pistol, etc.). -

ABSTRACT HODNET, ANDREW ARTHUR. The Othering of the Landsknechte. (Under the direction of Dr. Verena Kasper-Marienberg). This thesis offers a socio-cultural analysis of early modern German media to explore the public perception of the Landsknechte, mercenaries that were both valued and feared for their viciousness, and their indifference displayed towards the political motivations of their clients. Despite their ubiquity on European battlefields, and their role in repulsing the 1529 Ottoman invasion of Austria, by 1530 the Landsknechte and their families were perceived as thoroughly dishonorable by central Reformation society and were legally excluded from most urban centers. This study engages with a critical assessment of contemporary songs, religious pamphlets, broadsheets, political treatises, autobiographic sources, and belletristic representations of the Landsknechte to explore the paradoxical relationship that they maintained with the state actors that relied on their employment. Dieser Aufsatz will einige Unklarheiten beseitigen, indem wesentliche Argu- mente aus Literatur und Internet zusammengefasst dargestellt und diskutiert werden. Daraus wird eine neue, eindeutigere Definition entwickelt und vorgeschlagen. Neben einem Über- blick zur Entstehung der zweihändigen Kampfweise und der Waffenentwicklung werden einzelne Schwerttypen mit ihren historischen Bezeichnungen in ihrem zeitlichen und geo- grafischen Kontext behandelt. Wesentlicher Ansatzpunkt ist dabei die waffenkundige Betrachtung der Schwerter, die nicht nur von der äußeren Form, sondern auch vom in den Quellen, vor allem den Fechtbüchern, überlieferten praktischen Gebrauch ausgeht. Der geografische Schwerpunkt des Aufsatzes liegt auf dem deutschsprachigen Raum. Natürlich mussten bei diesem Thema auch die Quellen unserer Nachbarn, vor allem aus Italien, England und Frankreich, berücksichtigt werden. Ein Tafelteil mit einigen maßstäblich abgebildeten Beispielschwertern und ein zugehöriger Katalog runden den Aufsatz ab. Abstract Anyone looking for reliable information regarding the big swords appearing in the late Middle Ages, is confronted by a huge number of partially contradictory statements and definitions. This article wants to remove some lacks of clarity, while summarising and discussing essential arguments from literature and internet. From this overview a new, more clear definition is developed and proposed. -

he sword has been an iconic weapon in role-playing games from the earliest days. Who Thasn’t played a game where at least one player played a character wielding a mighty sword — be it a simple longsword, heavy bastard sword, versatile short sword, massive two-handed sword, or dextrous rapier? Swords, in their many flavors and varieties have filled the pages of role-playing games, fantasy books, and other writings for generations. But when you play your games, whether set in far off fantasy lands or in Norman England, do your swords all look alike? What sets one longsword apart from another? Sure, they all do the same amount of damage, but what makes them special? Swords have been around in human history since the Bronze Age, or maybe even earlier. They reached their height of variety and versatility in the European Middle Ages and have found a place among the armies of the world, stretching across Europe, Africa, and Asia. In basic terms, a sword is a bladed (edged) weapon used for cutting and thrusting. The exact definition, style, and name depends on which age of history you are examining and the culture that created the weapon. From saifs, daos, khopesh, katanas, spatha, talwar, and Viking swords to Norman Longswords, Zweihanders, scimitars, rapiers, epee, and cavalry sabers, swords have found a place in our history. These weapons were all designed to meet a specific need for the wielder - whether functional or emotional or both. From purely utilitarian functionality to great works of art, swords run the gamut of form and function, which is probably why they are so important in role-playing games. -
