  • Rules and Options
Rules and Options The author has attempted to draw as much as possible from the guidelines provided in the 5th edition Players Handbooks and Dungeon Master's Guide. Statistics for weapons listed in the Dungeon Master's Guide were used to develop the damage scales used in this book. Interestingly, these scales correspond fairly well with the values listed in the d20 Modern books. Game masters should feel free to modify any of the statistics or optional rules in this book as necessary. It is important to remember that Dungeons and Dragons abstracts combat to a degree, and does so more than many other game systems, in the name of playability. For this reason, the subtle differences that exist between many firearms will often drop below what might be called a "horizon of granularity." In D&D, for example, two pistols that real world shooters could spend hours discussing, debating how a few extra ounces of weight or different barrel lengths might affect accuracy, or how different kinds of ammunition (soft-nosed, armor-piercing, etc.) might affect damage, may be, in game terms, almost identical. This is neither good nor bad; it is just the way Dungeons and Dragons handles such things. Who can use firearms? Firearms are assumed to be martial ranged weapons. Characters from worlds where firearms are common and who can use martial ranged weapons will be proficient in them. Anyone else will have to train to gain proficiency— the specifics are left to individual game masters. Optionally, the game master may also allow characters with individual weapon proficiencies to trade one proficiency for an equivalent one at the time of character creation (e.g., monks can trade shortswords for one specific martial melee weapon like a war scythe, rogues can trade hand crossbows for one kind of firearm like a Glock 17 pistol, etc.).

  • Abstract Hodnet, Andrew Arthur
ABSTRACT HODNET, ANDREW ARTHUR. The Othering of the Landsknechte. (Under the direction of Dr. Verena Kasper-Marienberg). This thesis offers a socio-cultural analysis of early modern German media to explore the public perception of the Landsknechte, mercenaries that were both valued and feared for their viciousness, and their indifference displayed towards the political motivations of their clients. Despite their ubiquity on European battlefields, and their role in repulsing the 1529 Ottoman invasion of Austria, by 1530 the Landsknechte and their families were perceived as thoroughly dishonorable by central Reformation society and were legally excluded from most urban centers. This study engages with a critical assessment of contemporary songs, religious pamphlets, broadsheets, political treatises, autobiographic sources, and belletristic representations of the Landsknechte to explore the paradoxical relationship that they maintained with the state actors that relied on their employment. Through engaging with the cultural genres present in these depictions, the othering of the Landsknechte stems from their origin as the militaristic arm of Emperor Maximilian I’s attempted centralization of the Holy Roman Empire, continuing with the economic challenge the mercenary lifestyle posed to traditional social structures, and ending with their inextricable association between with the increasingly destructive and intrusive military-fiscal state. © Copyright 2018 by Andrew Arthur Hodnet All Rights Reserved The Othering of the Landsknechte by Andrew Arthur Hodnet A thesis submitted to the Graduate Faculty of North Carolina State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts History Raleigh, North Carolina 2018 APPROVED BY: _______________________________ _______________________________ Dr. Verena Kasper-Marienberg Dr.

  • “Styrian” Riding Sword in the Collections of the History Museum of Moldavia in Iasi
A 16th CENTURY “STYRIAN” RIDING SWORD IN THE COLLECTIONS OF THE HISTORY MUSEUM OF MOLDAVIA IN IASI BY CĂTĂLIN HRIBAN* Abstract One of the exhibits of Moldavia’s History Museum is an Early Modern/Late Medieval sword that has been until recently known and labeled as “Prince Vasile Lupu’s Sword”. Our investigation demonstrates, by means of typology analysis and analogy, that the item is an ordonance weapon in the category of “riding swords” dated at the end of 16th or the in the beginning of the 17th century, used to equipp the light cavalry or to be worn as side, weapon by travelers. The type of weapon is known as Styrian Sword, as the largest group of preserved items is located in the Styrian Arsenal Museum in .ra/, Austria. Keywords0 riding sword, .ra/ Arsenal, 1anner family, 2uremberg, the Thirteen 3ears 4ar. The Early Modern Module of the History Museum of Moldavia in Iasi has exhibited since 1960 a sword described, at least in one early instance, as having “the pommel in the shape of a two-headed eagle”1. One understands why with such reference the piece was linked to Prince Vasile Lupu (1634–1653A, a voivode with dreams of Imperial restoration, and placed in the e5hibition directly beneath the plaster copy of this princeBs foundational inscription of the Trei Ierarhi Monastery. In fact, the institutional oral wisdom often describes the piece as the “Vasile LupuBs sword”. In an earlier paper we tried to clear as much as possible this connection with the Moldavian prince, or any member of the ruling family, for that matter2.

Abstract Anyone looking for reliable information regarding the big swords appearing in the late Middle Ages, is confronted by a huge number of partially contradictory statements and definitions. This article wants to remove some lacks of clarity, while summarising and discussing essential arguments from literature and internet. From this overview a new, more clear definition is developed and proposed.

  • Swords and Daggers
Swords and Daggers Swords are weapons formed by a blade (the part intended for striking) and a hilt (from which the sword is held) [Fig. 1]. While there have been swords made of wood and stone, the more predominant and effective examples have been made of some sort of metal. Bronze was used in ancient times, followed by iron and then steel. Daggers are a more primitive, much smaller weapon which share many features with the sword. As a general rule, knives have a single edge. Blade The sword’s blade can be divided between the forte (third of the blade closer to the hilt) and the foible (third of the blade closer to the tip). This refers to how much strength the wielder can put into each area of the blade when used as a lever. The part of the blade that becomes narrow and goes into the grip is called the tang [Fig. 2]. The point of balance [Fig. 3] is the sword’s center of gravity, often found on the blade very close to the hilt, and influences the handling of the weapon. The center of percussion [Fig. 3] is the area of the blade that produces the least amount of vibration when striking a target, and thus is the ideal place with which to strike. The cross-section of the blade [Fig. 4] is the shape it has when cut at the guard. The fullers, incorrectly called blood grooves in modern times, were used to reduce the weight of the blade and give it structural strength.
