  • The Firearms and Gun Safe of Ernest Hemingway
The Firearms and Gun Safe of Ernest Hemingway championsafe.com /firearms-gun-safe-ernest-hemingway/ While most people know Ernest Hemingway for his landmark works of the 20 th century, such as The Old Man and the Sea and A Farewell to Arms , he had a wide variety of interests that he liked to share with his friends. One of his friends, A.E. Hotchner, described a picture that he and Ernest Hemingway took back when they were children. This picture showed Ernest carrying a rifle at around five or six years of age. In fact, Hemingway’s mother stated that his father taught Ernest how to shoot around age two and could capably handle a pistol at age four. This unique and lesser-known passion has carried over into the industry today. Hemingway’s Firearms Passion Because Hemingway was so passionate about firearms from a young age, this passion spilled over into his writing. During his high school years, he was a member of the firearms club with his classmates. When he turned 18, he joined the military and served his country. While he wasn’t overseas, he hunted a variety of animals such as bears, deer, and elk on the American frontier. He also traveled on a variety of safaris, well-represented in his work. He worked hard to maintain his skills with firearms until the day he died. The Chronicles of War Hemingway served his country during World War I and worked as a reporter during World War II. This, combined with the passions described above, obviously meant that Hemingway led an action-packed life.

  • The Norwich Gun Industry
salzer_40_47 2/14/05 3:17 PM Page 40 The Norwich Gun Industry Dick Salzer New England and, especially, Connecticut have been and remain the center of the American gun industry ever since the days of the American Revolution. Gun makers orig- inally were attracted to Connecticut because of that state’s many assets—year-round water power, a skilled industrial labor base, good ports and rail lines, and proximity to the major population centers of New York and Boston—all of these contributed to that centralization. These factors were especially prevalent at Norwich. The City of Norwich was founded in 1659. By the time of the American Revolution, it had grown to become one of the 10 largest cities in the Colonies.1 It was richly endowed with all of those assets desirable in a manufacturing site, not the least of which was the confluence of the Shetucket and Yantic Rivers, which merged at Norwich to form the navi- gable Thames River. As a large city by the standards of the breadth of the Norwich arms industry during its golden day, it offered sources of capital, a diverse population of years. skilled workers, support industries, and easy access to the This presentation will focus largely on the period New York and Boston markets through its sheltered port starting in the 1840’s when conditions were exactly right and rail lines. for the incubation of the arms industry. • Rules and Options
Rules and Options The author has attempted to draw as much as possible from the guidelines provided in the 5th edition Players Handbooks and Dungeon Master's Guide. Statistics for weapons listed in the Dungeon Master's Guide were used to develop the damage scales used in this book. Interestingly, these scales correspond fairly well with the values listed in the d20 Modern books. Game masters should feel free to modify any of the statistics or optional rules in this book as necessary. It is important to remember that Dungeons and Dragons abstracts combat to a degree, and does so more than many other game systems, in the name of playability. For this reason, the subtle differences that exist between many firearms will often drop below what might be called a "horizon of granularity." In D&D, for example, two pistols that real world shooters could spend hours discussing, debating how a few extra ounces of weight or different barrel lengths might affect accuracy, or how different kinds of ammunition (soft-nosed, armor-piercing, etc.) might affect damage, may be, in game terms, almost identical. This is neither good nor bad; it is just the way Dungeons and Dragons handles such things. Who can use firearms? Firearms are assumed to be martial ranged weapons. Characters from worlds where firearms are common and who can use martial ranged weapons will be proficient in them. Anyone else will have to train to gain proficiency— the specifics are left to individual game masters. Optionally, the game master may also allow characters with individual weapon proficiencies to trade one proficiency for an equivalent one at the time of character creation (e.g., monks can trade shortswords for one specific martial melee weapon like a war scythe, rogues can trade hand crossbows for one kind of firearm like a Glock 17 pistol, etc.).

Hardman.qxd 1/10/08 9:35 AM Page 15 Gutta-Percha, Hard Rubber and Synthetics in Firearms James (Jim) Hardman The town of Dorset, Vermont is a quiet place, but we do host an antique show that sets up on the village green every other year. A couple of years ago, I saw a fine little parts cabinet for sale. “Those knobs are gutta-percha,” the dealer said. “How do you know that?” I asked. I guess I pinched his ulcer because he glowered at me and said “I’m a professional . and I know these things!” Well, they are not gutta-percha, but the name gutta-per- cha seems to resonate with antique dealers. Some antique dealers will also tell you that civil war “Union” picture cases were made of gutta-percha. (Figure 1) Some were, but for the most part, these cases were molded of “Mud”—in this case, a mix of natural resins including shellac and blended with pigments and wood flour. Probable extinction of the western black rhino Yemen’s attitudes towards rhino horn and jambiyas Lucy Vigne, Esmond Martin PO Box 15510 – 00503, Nairobi, Kenya; email: [email protected] Abstract In 1990 the Marxist government of the south that had banned civilians from possessing weapons, including the jambiya dagger, was ousted. South Yemen united with North Yemen to form one country. Were more people in the south going to emulate the northerners and buy jambiyas once again? Having not been in the southern region since 1993, we surveyed five main southern towns in early 2008 to see if influences from the north had encouraged the southerners to wear jambiyas in recent years. In many ways the southerners are emulating the northerners: they have shed Marxism in favour of capitalism and there has been an increase in traditional Islamic practices, but they still look down on jambiyas. However, the dagger is still a proud sign of being a northern tribesman, and Sanaa remains the centre of the jambiya industry - with rhino horn most favoured for handles; Taiz trails a distant second in importance. We learned more about the attitudes of Yemenis, especially from the younger more prosperous men in Sanaa who are likely to buy a rhino horn jambiya. And we increased public awareness on the plight of the rhino, distributing DVDs on Yemen’s rhino horn trade and supplying other educational materials to Yemenis in Sanaa and Taiz. Résumé En 1990 le gouvernement marxiste du sud qui avait interdit aux civils de posséder des armes, y compris le poignard jambiya, a été évincé.
