Religion and Diaspora: Islam As Ancestral Heritage in Mauritius
Journal of Muslims in Europe 5 (2016) 87-105 brill.com/jome Religion and Diaspora: Islam as Ancestral Heritage in Mauritius Patrick Eisenlohr Georg-August-Universität Göttingen [email protected] Abstract Orientation towards a point of political and historical allegiance outside the bound- aries of the nation-state is often taken to be a defining quality of diasporas, and this aligns with the ubiquitous tendency of Islamic practice to engage with sources of long- distance, or indeed global, religious authority. In this article, I shall investigate the dimensions of religious and political long-distance allegiances by analysing Mauritian Muslims as a diasporic formation. Looking at debates between proponents of Barelwi, Deobandi and Salafi traditions of Islam and disagreements between Urdu and Arabic as ‘ancestral languages’, I show the malleability of diasporic orientations manifest in such ‘ancestral culture’. This is not just a matter of theological contestation, but represents forms of belonging driven by local politics in a context where the state privileges the engagement with major, standardised forms of religious tradition as ancestral heritage. 1 Sounding Islam ECHO In August 2011, I was sitting in Farhad’s living room in a village in northeast Mauritius. Farhad is an Urdu teacher and a locally well-known reciter of na‘t, a popular genre of devotional Urdu poetry in honor of the Prophet Muhammad. We were talking about different ways of reciting this genre when Farhad reached for his mobile phone and played a recording by the well-known Pakistani reciter of na‘t (na‘t khwan) Owais Qadri. The short audio clip featured a very strong echo effect so that every word, every syllable was audibly repeated several times, the sound of the poetry blurring in this way, with only the beginning of the two lines of poetry “yā khudā” (O God) being clearly intelligible to us. With a critical look on his face Farhad remarked, “Do you hear this? This is Owais Qadri with echo. This is not good. What you just heard is from amahfil [devotional gathering] with an audience. Now listen to this.” He switched to a different recording. “Now I make you listen to a na‘t by Qari Fasihuddin [Syed Fasihuddin Soharwardi, a well-known Pakistani na‘t khwan] in a studio, where all the facilities for echo, the microphone, all the apparatuses needed, are already there.” Āe ishq-e nabī mere O love of the Prophet Dil mein bhī samā jānā Reside in my heart as well Āe ishq-e nabī mere . Islam Across the Globe: from Southeast Asia, to the Middle East and the American Midwest Baitul Makmur Meulaboh Grand Mosque, Meulaboh, Aceh Province, Indonesia Teaching Resources June 28, 2019 Introduction This packet of educational resources was developed to complement the June 28, 2019 workshop, Islam Across the Globe: from Southeast Asia, to the Middle East and the American Midwest. This workshop will introduce Grade 6-12 teachers to Islam in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and the U.S. Midwest. Experts in the field, as well as members of Michigan’s Muslim community, will lead the workshop and discussion. Participating teachers will learn about the basic tenets of Islam and its multiple and diverse traditions and practices in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. They will also learn about the history and practice of Islam in the U.S., with emphasis on Michigan’s Muslim community, challenging the assumption that the global religion of Islam is new and foreign to this country. The workshop will also address Islamophobic stereotypes and misperceptions in the U.S. and provide strategies for teachers to respond in their classrooms and communities. The resources in this packet contain three primary components: ideas for designing inquiry-based lessons, an inquiry lesson on the broad history of Islam, a lesson on Islam in Southeast Asia, and a lesson on Islam and Islamophobia in the United States. The section on designing lessons can help teachers take content from the workshop and create their own materials and units of study. The lesson plans can help teachers begin to connect students to these issues more immediately, and are ready to be adapted and implemented in secondary classrooms. -

Muslims are born, live, eat, work, study, play, worship and die on almost every continent and numerous island nations. Yet US discussions about Islam and Muslims often describe the faith as monolithic, unchanging, and the people as following the same practices. Muslim leaders and texts describe Muslims as belonging to a boundary-erasing nation (‘ummah). Yet many recognize differences and divisions based in practices and beliefs, ascribing these to local cultures and global ideological influences. Islam and Muslim culture are discussed and used as rationale for events in US media and public talk daily. What does it mean to argue that Islamic practices and Muslim culture are the reason for events that make the news (and even those that don’t)? How do we make sense of these arguments about the relationships between belief, culture, and action? How do Muslims move through the world, engage the many opinions circulating around them, employ religious texts (or not), and interact with non-Muslims? Is there Muslim culture(s) or is this a concept used for political and social domination and/or discrimination? This course offers anthropological perspectives on these questions.
