This annual event a ords the visitor the opportunity to interact with individual artists and artisans, who live and work in Cyprus, in their own studios. Visitors are encouraged to access our website featuring detailed information as well as a MAP to assist in locating each studio or workspace.

Η ετήσια αυτή διοργάνωση προσφέρει στον επισκέπτη την δυνατότητα να γνωρίσει μεμονωμενους καλλιτέχνες και τεχνίτες, οι οποίοι ζουν και εργάζονται στην Κύπρο στα δικά τους στούντιο, στο δικό τους χώρο δημιουργίας. Οι επισκέπτες παρακαλούνται να επισκεφθούν την ιστοσελίδα μας, που διαθέτει λεπτομερείς πληροφορίες, καθώς και ένα χάρτη που θα βοηθήσει στον εντοπισμό του κάθε στούντιο. www.cyprusopenstudios.com Studios are open during the ﬁrst 4 weekends of October between 11.00hrs and 17.00hrs on Saturdays and Sundays. Individual participants elected certain weekends to be open to the public – please look at the schedule to avoid disappointment.

Entrance is free and visitors are under no obligation to buy, but we live in hope! And don’t forget to enter the competition: see the inside back cover for the entry form. Many of the participants undertake commissions – please consult with them direct.

Banners bearing the distinctive orange splash will be displayed near the entrance to each open studio. Should you require speciﬁc information, please contact the studio or artist direct – you will be assisted.

Τα στούντιο θα είναι ανοικτά τα πρώτα 4 Σαββατοκύριακα του Οκτωβρίου μεταξύ 11.00 και 17.00, Σάββατα και Κυριακές. Κάποιοι καλλιτέχνες έχουνε επιλέξει να είναι ανοικτοί ορισμένα μόνο Σαββατοκύριακα – παρακαλούμε να συμβουλευτείτε το χρονοδιάγραμμα για να αποφύγετε μια πιθανή απογοήτευση.

Η είσοδος είναι ελεύθερη! και οι επισκέπτες δεν έχουν καμία υποχρέωση να αγοράσουν έργα… OPEN Μην ξεχάσετε να δηλώσετε συμμετοχή στον διαγωνισμό – δείτε τις οδηγίες στο εσωτερικό πίσω εξώφυλλο όπου βρίσκεται και η αίτηση συμμετοχής. Στην πρώτη διοργάνωση Cyprus Open Studios 2016 συμμετέχουν καλλιτέχνες από την Πάφο, τη Λεμεσό, τη Λάρνακα και τη Λευκωσία.

In the centre of this catalogue you will ﬁnd a map and a schedule indicating who will be open, where and when. Our website features a Google map which is more detailed – please consult that if possible.

Cyprus Open Studios 2016 3 The artists and artisans include sculptors, potters, painters, glass workers, jewellers and many more talented people who work in styles from naïve to realistic to abstract and more. They also come from a variety of backgrounds, countries and cultures. They rely on you to make this experience enjoyable and memorable, as you travel from mountain villages to bustling cities and on the way, stop o to look at the scenery and enjoy Cyprus hospitality. This event is funded and promoted by the artists themselves. The organisers wish to express their gratitude to each participant for sharing their passion with the public.

Οι καλλιτέχνες και τεχνίτες είναι εκτός από ζωγράφοι, γλύπτες, αγγειοπλάστες, καλλιτέχνες του γυαλιού, κοσμηματοτεχνίτες, και πολλοί άλλοι ταλαντούχοι άνθρωποι που εργάζονται σε στυλ από ναΐφ, σε ρεαλιστικό σε αφηρημένο και σε πολλά άλλα. Έρχονται επίσης από διάφορα υπόβαθρα, χώρες και πολιτισμούς. Στηρίζονται σε σας ώστε η εμπειρία σας να είναι απολαυστική και αξέχαστη, καθώς θα ταξιδεύετε σε ορεινά χωριά και πολυσύχναστες πόλεις … Η όλη διοργάνωση (ιστοσελίδα, εκτυπωτικά, κλπ) χρηματοδοτείται εξ ολοκλήρου από τους ίδιους τους καλλιτέχνες, και για το λόγο αυτό η ομάδα διαχείρισης (προσφέρει τις υπηρεσίες της αμισθί) ευχαριστεί θερμά στους καλλιτέχνες που μοιράζονται το πάθος τους με το κοινό.

Karen sculpts in limestone and also in cement/ﬁbreglass/resin mixes. She also paints in an abstract style using fusions of water- and oil-based materials. Karen has worked extensively on the female form.

Cyprus Open Studios 2016 5 BEVIS, Keren

Keren paints on canvas using acrylics mostly. She also uses various other mediums depending on the subject, i.e. glitter, household paint, gold/silver-leaf (e ect) metal paints, chalk, pens, etc. She always varnishes her work, sometimes to a high gloss-e ect to make the colours 'pop'. Her subjects are quite diverse, and include portraits, animal portraits, abstracts, seascapes, landscapes, and more. Keren has been commissioned to paint many things including a dolls' house!

She has also painted many murals - in fact, this is where she started her journey into art. She has also 'up-cycled' furniture, photographs of these are available to peruse!

H Keren ζωγραφίζει σε καμβά και ως επί το πλείστον με ακρυλικά. Χρησιμοποιεί, επίσης, διάφορα άλλα μέσα ανάλογα με το αντικείμενο, δηλαδή: glitter, οικιακές μπογιές, φύλλα χρυσό/ασήμι, μεταλλικά χρώματα, κιμωλία, στυλό, κλπ. Πάντοτε βάζει βερνίκι στα έργα της, μερικές φορές σε υψηλή γυαλάδα-επίδραση ώστε τα χρώματα να ‘πετιούνται’. Τα θέματά της είναι ποικίλα, και περιλαμβάνουν προσωπογραφίες, πορτρέτα ζώων, αφηρημένο, θαλασσογραφίες, τοπία και άλλα. Στην Keren έχουν δοθεί πολλών ειδών παραγγελίες, συμπεριλαμβανομένου και ενός κουκλόσπιτου! Επίσης έχει φιλοτεχνήσει πολλές τοιχογραφίες – κατά ακρίβεια από εκεί ξεκίνησε το ταξίδι της στην τέχνη. Έχει επίσης «ανακυκλώσει» έπιπλα, φωτογραφίες των οποίων μπορείτε να δείτε στην ιστοσελίδα της.

Gabi is a textile artist specialising in felting and dying. She prefers to work with natural ﬁbres and dies and loves creating interesting surfaces and textures.

Directions / Οδηγίες : Take the LIMASSOL/PAPHOS motorway exit signed EVDHIMOU/AVDHIMOU. Go through the village over the speed bumps. After a small park on the left, take the left turning signed ANOGYRA. Follow this road until you see a sign saying ANOGYRA. Turn right here. Continue upwards round many bends, passing the old monastery on your right. Stay on this road, passing the Taverna on your right. The road curves left and right and very soon you reach a car-park on the right. Park here and follow the sign at the rear of the car-park to the OPEN STUDIOS.

Πάρτε την έξοδο Ευδίμου / Αυδίμου από τον αυτοκινητόδρομο Λεμεσού – Πάφου. Διασχίστε το χωριό και τα σαμαράκια. Μετά από ένα μικρό πάρκο στα αριστερά, στρίψτε αριστερά για Ανώγυρα. Ακολουθήστε αυτό το δρόμο μέχρι να δείτε την σήμανση για Ανώγυρα. Εκεί θα στρίψετε δεξιά. Συνεχίστε ανηφορώντας με πολλά στριψίματα και θα περάσετε από το παλιό μοναστήρι στα δεξιά σας. Μείνετε σε αυτό το δρόμο, περνώντας την ταβέρνα στα δεξιά σας. Ο δρόμος στρίβει αριστερά και μετά δεξιά και σύντομα θα φθάσετε σε ένα χώρο στάθμευσης στα δεξιά. Παρκάρετε εκεί και ακολουθήστε τις πινακίδες για OPEN STUDIOS στο πίσω μέρος του χώρου στάθμευσης.

8 Cyprus Open Studios 2016 CALDER, Sue

Sue paints in oils predominantly but also uses other media such as watercolour, acrylic, and others. Her forte is portraiture and she works mainly on commissions but plays with landscapes, seascapes and nature.

Cyprus Open Studios 2016 9 CAMPBELL, Emily Jane

Emily’s work is nostalgic and introspective and yet asks universal questions about the human condition and inevitability. Her work inhabits a hinterland between shrouded ﬁguration and lyrical abstraction without seeking to identify itself fully with any genre; its desire is to communicate the subjective emotional experience as well as the universal. Although it is not always obvious because of her strong focus on texture and the visual quality of decay; she does not consider her paintings to be wholly abstract as they are deeply rooted in the formal qualities of the natural world and negotiate very real, often painful memories of time and place. Her work often evokes the early magic of childhood and is typiﬁed by the themes of personal loss and mourning, the inevitable decomposition in nature and the body, and the memories which are ultimately all that endure. She has become increasingly preoccupied with the dichotomy of life and decay as inseparable, as one and the same. For a lot of life the destruction of one thing is necessary for the growth and renewal of another.

Το έργο της Emily είναι νοσταλγικό ή και εσωστρεφές και αναζητά καθολικές ερωτήσεις σχετικά με την ανθρώπινη κατάσταση και τα αναπόφευκτα. Το έργο της ανήκει σε μια ενδοχώρα μεταξύ καλυμμένης φιγούρας και λυρικής αφηρημένης τέχνης χωρίς να επιδιώκει να ταυτιστεί πλήρως με ένα είδος τέχνης μόνο. Το έργο της προσπαθεί να κοινοποιήσει την υποκειμενική συναισθηματική εμπειρία, καθώς και την καθολική. Αν και δεν είναι πάντα εμφανές λόγω της ισχυρή έμφασης της στην υφή και την οπτική ποιότητα της αποσύνθεσης, η Emily δεν θεωρεί τα έργα της εξ ολοκλήρου αφηρημένα, καθώς είναι βαθιά ριζωμένα σε τυπικές ποιότητες του φυσικού κόσμου και διαπραγματεύεται τις πολύ πραγματικές, συχνά επώδυνες αναμνήσεις τόπου και χρόνου. Το έργο της συχνά απεικονίζει την πρόωρη μαγεία της παιδικής ηλικίας και χαρακτηρίζεται από θέματα προσωπικής απώλειας και πένθους, την αναπόφευκτη αποσύνθεση στην φύση και το σώμα και τις αναμνήσεις που τελικά είναι όλα αυτά που απομένουν. Την απασχολεί όλο και περισσότερο η διχοτόμηση της ζωής και της αποσύνθεσης ως αδιαχώριστες, ως ένα και το ίδιο. Marion creates unique travel-friendly ceramic pieces from both local and imported clays using skills learned from courses and workshops in ceramics and enjoys painting in oils and drawing in di erent media.

Η Marion δημιουργεί μοναδικά κομμάτια κεραμικών (εύκολα στη μεταφορά) από τοπικό ή εισαγόμενο άργιλο, αφού παρακολούθησε μαθήματα και εργαστήρια τέχνης κεραμικής και της αρέσει να ζωγραφίζει επίσης με λάδι, και να σχεδιάζει χρησιμοποιώντας διάφορα μέσα.

Cyprus Open Studios 2016 11 CHOJNOWSKI, Mary

Mary is a mosaic artist, painter, and illustrator. She runs community art projects with schools and community groups of all ages and abilities. She also accepts many private commissions, creating mosaics for homes and gardens. Her mosaics are all original designs, inspired by nature, myth and culture.

Η Mary είναι καλλιτέχνις μωσαϊκών, ζωγράφος και εικονογράφος. Διαχειρίζεται προγράμματα τέχνης με σχολεία και κοινοτικές ομάδες όλων των ηλικιών και ικανοτήτων. Δέχεται επίσης πολλές ιδιωτικές παραγγελίες και δημιουργεί ψηφιδωτά για ιδιωτικές οικίες και κήπους. Τα ψηφιδωτά είναι όλα πρωτότυπα σχέδια, εμπνευσμένα από τη φύση, το μύθο και τον πολιτισμό.

Directions / Οδηγίες : On the main road between Polis and Paphos, turn o towards Aphrodite’s Rock Brewery, approximately 1km north of the Tsada Village turno . Pass the brewery and about 50m further on the right is Mersini Villa.

Στον κεντρικό δρόμο Πόλης - Πάφου, εξέλθετε για Aphrodite’s Rock Brewery, περίπου 1 χιλιόμετρο βόρεια της στροφής για Τσάδα. Περάστε το ζυθοποιείο και περίπου 50 μέτρα πιο κάτω, στα δεξιά είναι η Βίλα Μερσίνη.

Judith studied at the Bartlett School of Architecture, London University, graduating with Distinction. She has an ongoing love a air with the simple beauty and rich cultural heritage of Cyprus. These are reﬂected in her water-colours, a medium to which she is passionately addicted. Landscapes, still life and Cyprus scenes are all inspirations accomplished in water-colour, pen and ink, as well as pen and wash. Another area of speciality is commissions of clients’ houses and gardens which has been particularly popular in Cyprus.

Cyprus Open Studios 2016 13 COOK, Carrie

Carrie can genuinely be described as unique. Not only is she severely disabled, but she goes out of her way to help others who are su ering. Carrie creates works of art, using organic matter and randomly found objects. She calls these projects Bizarre Surreal Organic Dot Ink.

Bonsai cultivation has been a love of hers for some 35 years. When you buy one of her bonsai babies, it comes with a maintenance contract. Carrie is also a qualiﬁed horticulturist.

Christine is an amateur artist who took up art on her move to Cyprus in September 2003. She had lessons with Elli Lestas and Marina Emphietzi-Harris. She is still exploring many di erent mediums and styles. She mostly enjoys painting people and animals. She has executed commissions to paint clients’ villas in pen and watercolour, amongst other things. She derives great pleasure from seeing an image appearing from a blank paper or canvas.

Tara creates intensely colourful mystical Oil Paintings which act as Portals into other benign dimensions when gazed upon in relaxed reverie. Her intensely colourful creations are informed by years of studying Symbolism and the physiological & spiritual e ects of Colour in human beings.

Tara has a BA in Fine Art from St Martin's College of Art & Design, London, trained in Oil Painting for many years with Abstract Painters Michael Horn & Chris Gough & has an MA in Feature Film from Goldsmith's College, University of the Arts, London.

Alessandra - or Alex, as she is known, reﬂects on life's questions, the ‘assumes’ and the discovery of the Self. The work deals with the acceptance of our humanity, the letting go of broken dreams and illusions. It looks at the way life invites us to reach a space of equanimity, wisdom and generosity. This is the inner journey that is the universal journey of all humanity.

Marina's work explores issues of time, life and memory. Through painting she channels life experiences into works of art. Her style and compositions show the natural forms of a real world in a semi abstract, expressionistic and/or conceptualistic way. 20 Cyprus Open Studios 2016 GARDNER, Linda

Linda creates small to medium sized decorative objects from glass in several formats: Mosaics of local ﬂora and fauna, using a mix of glass tiles, shells, stone and/or ceramics, and Fused Glass, where she designs initial patterns, cuts the glass pieces for them and assemble them in a kiln to fuse together at high temperatures. She enjoys the bright colours and the way the light illuminates the glass. She oers workshops and try-out sessions for creating mosaics.

Linda works in watercolour, which she started on retiring to Cyprus in 2005, having lessons with Judith Constantinou in Tala. She enjoys working in a loose style, sometimes without the use of a preliminary pencil sketch, especially for birds, ﬂowers and animals. She also likes painting ﬁgurative and life drawing studies.

Follow the road through the ravine and take the second turning to the right into Mary Leptos Street and continue up and over the hill - about 500m. Take ﬁrst left into Aphrodite Street (Rododafni/Ambelia sign). Go down the hill into the dip - you will see a house on the corner surrounded by bougainvillea. Park in the parking area on the left or in the side street called Dionysou. The entrance is in Dionysou Street.

26 Cyprus Open Studios 2016 HENRY, Derek Derek is interested in portraits of women who have distinguished themselves in the ﬁght for female emancipation throughout the world. The main exhibition features a set of original giclee prints on hand-made paper. Other artworks explore esoteric work related to meditation in oil on canvas, mixed media and encaustic wax on wooden panels.

Στον Derek αρέσει να ζωγραφίζει πορτρέτα γυναικών που έχουν διακριθεί στον παγκόσμιο αγώνα για την γυναικεία χειραφέτηση. Susan has been working in ceramics for over 30 years having learned her craft at Morley College in London. After experimenting with every technique, she now concentrates on hand-building using mostly porcelain and paper clay. She creates a wide variety of objects ranging from tiles to tea-lights and mosaics, nearly all of which are inspired by the wild ﬂowers and rich history of Cyprus.

Anastasia works on various artistic pathways because that’s also what Art Fusions Studio is all about. Her ultimate goal is to have as many art pathways hosted in the studio as possible. She goes by the motto “Every day you learn something new” and for her it is important to pursue any art pathway she ﬁnds interesting and important to obtain knowledge on, in order to create artwork.

Tashi’s work is a dialogue in contemporary times, a narrative that resonates a sense of precariousness that has come to signify our times. If anything, it challenges the sense of the immovable, the permanent. It embraces vulnerability and fragility. The focus shifts from the changes that are observable and felt, to those that are often unacknowledged and immutable, a sense that the beliefs and certainties that deﬁned our world have changed irrevocably.

Cyprus Open Studios 2016 37 MACPHERSON, Celia Potoudis

Celia makes hand built ceramics. These are usually large bowls and vessels built up from large coils, as has been done for millennia, before the wheel was invented. She learned to do this when she was living in Kenya and her work has a strong African theme although she is also influenced by ancient Greek pottery and the Mediterranean where she grew up. The pots are burnished to a soft sheen, then fired in a raku kiln. The firing process is very dramatic. It is based on an ancient Japanese technique that involves taking the pot out of the kiln when it is red hot, resulting in interesting and often unpredictable eects on the final surface.

Η Σίλεια κατασκευάζει κεραμικά με το χέρι. Συνήθως μεγάλα κύπελλα και σκάφη που κατασκευάζονται από μεγάλα πηνία, όπως κατασκευάζονται εδώ και χιλιετίες, πριν την εφεύρεση του τροχού. Έμαθε την τεχνική αυτή στην Κένυα, όπου έζησε παλιά, και η δουλειά της έχει μια ισχυρή αφρικάνικη θεματική, όπως και από την αρχαία ελληνική κεραμική και τη Μεσόγειο, όπου και μεγάλωσε. Τα δοχεία τρίβονται μέχρι απαλής γυαλάδας, και μετά ψήνονται σε κλίβανο raku. Η διαδικασία είναι πολύ δραματική. Trisha paints mainly in oils on canvas. She enjoys painting landscapes, seascapes and villages and her style is fairly traditional inspired by what she sees around her. Although happy working on large canvases she is known for her miniature paintings which are mostly scenes of Cyprus. There will be original and prints on display and she accepts commissions. She also paints designs on specially made roof tiles and makes and paints her own clay plaques.

Gemma is an artist who uses all mediums. Primarily trained as a painter almost twenty years ago, she loves working in oils but also regularly sketches and uses watercolours as she loves to experience many di erent materials. Barry works in watercolour and acrylics in a realistic style and have completed several commissions over the years. His inspiration comes from old Cyprus images, the many natural stone buildings/churches, ships in harbours, animals and people – basically anything that catches his eye.

Mary-Lynne paints in oils, acrylics and watercolours, and uses mixed media. She also has a track record as a printmaker, in particular in stone lithography. Her primary source of inspiration is the land – the landscape and what grows on the land – constant sources of wonder to her. She says that if she could distil the essence of her experience of what she sees in the most succinct way, she would feel that she had done her job. The results are often quite abstract in quality.

Athena works with clay. Her work is sculptural and influenced by her Cypriot roots and her particular love for Cypriot Pottery of the Prehistoric period. She loves to hand-build and experiment with alternative firing techniques.' Ferric Fumed' raku glazes produce stunning eects, especially when combined with pit-fired finishes. She mainly uses a raku clay {Scarva Earthstone Professional - Ashraf Hannah Raku Body} which can withstand the shock of being pulled red hot out of the kiln to air temperature, be sprayed upon, submerged into water and placed in a reduction chamber.

Having completed a BA in Fine Art at UEL, Fred came to Cyprus, and decided to stay. His present work draws upon the landscapes, architecture and political overtones of the country.

He does illustration, both small and large scale. He works in pen and ink, graphite and colour wash. Work is suitable for book illustration, or graphic design. Commissions undertaken. Fred does life drawing, including pastel and charcoal, as well as cartoons in pencil and ink.

Ken uses pen and pencil, acrylics and oils to create architectural paintings of immense beauty and details. He also loves painting seascapes, landscapes, marine vessels and people. In its 36 years of existence, the gallery has exhibited nearly all the well-known Cypriot artists, such as, Telemachos Kanthos, Christoforos Savva, Adamantios Diamantis, Lefteris Economou, Ioannis Kissonergis and Stelios Votsis, which were the forefathers of modern art in Cyprus.

The gallery aims to promote quality art through its exhibitions - ceramics, painting, jewellery, sculpture, installations and photography. It has in the past hosted names such as Picasso and Braque (engravings only) and Valentinos Charalambous - a Cypriot ceramist, student of Bernard Leach and holder of a Life Achievement Award from Cambridge University, UK.

Amongst some of the exhibitions held, were a group exhibition of engravings by Miro, Dali, Matisse, Dupont, Matta and Max Ernst - which was very successful, as well as a group exhibition of paintings by the ﬁnest greek artists of the 20th century, whose works can be seen in the National Gallery of Athens, Greece, such as Lytras, Gyzis, Parthenis, Tsarouchis, Theoﬁlos, Moralis, Fassianos and many others.

The gallery does not specialize in any speciﬁc style or movement, thus providing the viewer with the opportunity to appreciate dierent approaches to art. Some of the artists exhibited are very young and not as yet introduced to the public, as the gallery feels “obliged” to help/encourage these newcomers. It believes “selling” is not its sole purpose, “educating” and bringing new ideas to the table is just as important. Opus 39 is unafraid to “take a chance” as well as dare.

They work in every imaginable material, use mediums that would astound you and cultivate every ounce of talent they possess.

Nowadays, most people travel either with their smart phones or ipads/tablets, and it has never been easier to access these artists' studios, workshops and places where they manifest their dreams. If you are not one of those technologically mobile people, you may have access to a computer at your place of residence. For your delight, the website has been created to speed you on your way to your next stop while touring or simply give you the opportunity to plan your days out.
