Setting out from the main square of Szombathely and cycling via Király St we first take a right turn onto Széll Kálmán St before we reach Éhen Gyula Square. Going straight on to Semmelweis St we take a right turn to leave the town on Söptei Rd. Our first stop is in Vasasszonyfa where we break our journey to visit a museum dedicated to the Avar period. The exhibition displays findings excavated in the area of an early mediaeval cemetery located between the former Kisasszonyfa and Nagyasszonyfa and it also shows objects such as weapons, personal belong- ings and articles of clothing of Avar peoples. Our next stop is a small town, Csepreg, where it is worth taking a closer look at the Schöller Palace, the Rottermann Palace and the Prom- enade. We continue our journey towards Acsád, only to stop 3 and dine in the lovely Ablánci Route: Csárda, a little country tavern Szombathely–Söpte–Vasasszonyfa tucked away in the woods. The –Csepreg–Ablánci malomcsárda–Meszlen –Vasasszonyfa–Söpte–Szombathely inn was built by an old water mill (about 45 km) that has been used for centuries. 3. Start- ing from the main square of Szombathely the tour continues on the biking path of Kôszegi St leading onto Paragvári St, leaving the town on the extension of this path, on Szent Imre Herceg Rd, via the Herény district. The path will takes us to Gencsapáti, where we can explore the Szentkút Chapel and the Széchenyi Palace. From here, we will pedal to Gyöngyös- falu where the Holdfény Liget fun park (Moon Shine Grove) will fill us with the spirit of adventure. We can climb the rope-way, try the quad bikes or the horse carriages, do Nordic walking or enjoy rafting. There is a Finnish sauna, a Squirrel Park (for kids), a football field; table tennis and beach volley facilities, grill and barbecue sites and a model railroad available. We will then head to Kôszegszerdahely to see the still working water mill and pedal on to Cák where the listed row of wine cellars will offer a chance to get some rest and taste some wine. The destination of this tour is the town of Kôszeg where you simply must see the Jurisics Castle, 4 the Old Tower (Öregtorony), the Route: Pharmacy Museum and the Town Szombathely–Herény–Gencsapáti Council. By the spectacular row- –Gyöngyösfalu (Holdfény Liget Camping –Lukácsháza–Kôszegszerdahely–Kôszeg ing lake, just off the town, you (about 28 km) can also spend enjoyable time. 4. We set out from the main square of Szombathely, then pedal on Kôszegi St, and Petôfi St turning left onto the busy Rohonci Rd. Dolgozók St will take us to a junction in Olad where we can choose to go towards Bucsu or via Sé and Torony. Both itineraries are low traffic owing to the recently completed bypass section of Rd 89. Near Bucsu we can stop by to look at the remains of an ancient 5 Route: aqueduct, a Roman edifice Szombathely–Bucsu–Narda unearthed during the building of –Felsôcsatár–Vaskeresztes–Horvátlövô the bypass. We will go on cycling –Pornóapáti–Nárai–Szombathely (about 41 km) to Narda and continue our way on a biking route on Mount Vas until we reach Felsôcsatár. Here we can stop to see an iron curtain memorial site and have some tasty wine in Sándor’s tavern. From here on, we will keep passing (and visiting) vineyards and wine cellars until we arrive at the Stream Pinka. In Vaskeresztes we can stop over at the Alps Inn to satisfy our appetite with some trout and other specialities. We will then leisurely pedal through a woodland scenery be- tween Pornóapáti and Nárai. In the latter village, the Eörssys’ Manor House is worth a look from outside. From here, we can cycle back on a straight path to Szombathely. 5. Most of the path is covered with tarmac, occasionally interrupted by field terrain. Starting from Szombathely’s main square we pass through Szent Márton Rd and keep on cycling on Zanati St until we reach Vépi St. In the suburb of the town we arrive at a roundabout where Route: the bypasses of Roads 86 and 6 Szombathely–Vép–Táplán- 87 meet. Before reaching Vép, szent kereszt–Vasszécseny–Szentkirály –Szombathely (about 30 km) we can take a look at the local wind power plant. On leaving Vép we turn right at the junction with a sign, and keep on pedalling uphill toward Tanakajd. The tracks of the former railway cross are easy to discern along which we will cycle to Vasszécsény, then back to Szombathely. This part of the tour circumvents the traffic on Road 87 and we can have a taste of real mountain biking. Palaces we can visit during our tour: the Erdôdys’ fortified castle in Vép, the Széchenyi Palace in Táplánszentkereszt, The Old and New Ebergény Palaces in Vasszécsény, and the Bogát Palace in Szentkirály. 6. We will ride on concrete roads, seldom interrupted by field terrain near the railway line. We set out from in front of the Town Hall on Szombathely’s main square, and pedal on II. Rákóczi Ferenc St or on Rumi Rd until we reach the railway station in Szôlôs. After we leave the crossing we turn left, and go on Szent István St until we reach another railway cross- ing. At the first junction we turn left and pedal over the Stream Gyöngyös to reach the village of Szentkirály.
