CARNEY Department of Geography, University of California, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA 90095 ABSTRACT.—The African diaspora to the Americas was one of plants as well as people. European slavers provisioned their human cargoes with African and other Old World useful plants, which enabled their enslaved work force and free ma- roons to establish them in their gardens. Africans were additionally familiar with many Asian plants from earlier crop exchanges with the Indian subcontinent. Their efforts established these plants in the contemporary Caribbean plant corpus. The recognition of pantropical genera of value for food, medicine, and in the practice of syncretic religions also appears to have played an important role in survival, as they share similar uses among black populations in the Caribbean as well as tropical Africa. This paper, which focuses on the plants of the Old World tropics that became established with slavery in the Caribbean, seeks to illuminate the botanical legacy of Africans in the circum-Caribbean region. RESUME.—La diaspora africaine aux Ameriques ne s'est pas limitee aux person- nes, elle a egalement affecte les plantes. Azzazy 2 1 Botany Department, Faculty of Science, Port Said University, Port Said, Egypt 2 Natural Survey Resource Department, Environmental Studies and Research Institute, Minufiya University, Egypt ABSTRACT Nine profiles were studied at Sadat desert area. Xerophytes growing during rainy season represent the common plant cover. The studied soil samples revealed that soils contain high alkalinity, and sandy texture. Palenological studies of the present and the past vegetation (in soil profile strata) revealed the presence of pollen of seventeen families, twelve belonging to present cover ( Poaceae, Typhaceae, Tamaricaceae, Cyperaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Fabaceae, Apiaceae, Lamiaceae, Cruciferae, Plantaginacea, Convolvulaceae and Asteraceae) of present day, while five families recorded at the deep layers of the profiles not represented in the surface layers (Juncaceae, Caryophyllaceae, Oleaceae, Cucrbitaceae, and Geraniaceae). Also eleven families were repre- sented in the lower layers and uppermost ones. Ecological changes took place in the uppermost layer of the profile, changing into desert habitat. This may be due to climatic changes and man interference. Key words: Arid habitats, Climate change, Palynology, Sadat area Egypt, Xerophytes pollen. Stipules connate forming an often membranous sheath (the ocrea). Flowers bisexual or unisexual, actinomorphic, in racemes, panicles or clusters. Perianth with 3-6 segments, freeor fused, oftenaccrescent and enclosing the fruit, sometimes winged or toothed or bearing spines. Stamens 6-15. Tectonics of the Musandam Peninsula and Northern Oman Mountains: from Ophiolite Obduction to Continental Collision

Searle, Alan G. Cherry, Mohammed Y. Ali and David J.W. Cooper ABSTRACT The tectonics of the Musandam Peninsula in northern Oman shows a transition between the Late Cretaceous ophiolite emplacement related tectonics recorded along the Oman Mountains and Dibba Zone to the SE and the Late Cenozoic continent-continent collision tectonics along the Zagros Mountains in Iran to the northwest. Three stages in the continental collision process have been recognized. Stage one involves the emplacement of the Semail Ophiolite from NE to SW onto the Mid-Permian–Mesozoic passive continental margin of Arabia. The Semail Ophiolite shows a lower ocean ridge axis suite of gabbros, tonalites, trondhjemites and lavas (Geotimes V1 unit) dated by U-Pb zircon between 96.4–95.4 Ma overlain by a post-ridge suite including island-arc related volcanics including boninites formed between 95.4–94.7 Ma (Lasail, V2 unit). The ophiolite obduction process began at 96 Ma with subduction of Triassic–Jurassic oceanic crust to depths of > 40 km to form the amphibolite/granulite facies metamorphic sole along an ENE- dipping subduction zone. U-Pb ages of partial melts in the sole amphibolites (95.6– 94.5 Ma) overlap precisely in age with the ophiolite crustal sequence, implying that subduction was occurring at the same time as the ophiolite was forming. The ophiolite, together with the underlying Haybi and Hawasina thrust sheets, were thrust southwest on top of the Permian–Mesozoic shelf carbonate sequence during the Late Cenomanian–Campanian. -

International Journal of Scientific & Engineering Research, Volume 4, Issue 9, September-2013 452 ISSN 2229-5518 Ethnobotanical Usages of Grasses in Central Punjab-Pakistan Arifa Zereen, Tasveer Zahra Bokhari & Zaheer-Ud-Din Khan ABSTRACT- Poaceae (Gramineae) constitutes the second largest family of monocotyledons, having great diversity and performs an important role in the lives of both man and animals. The present study was carried out in eight districts (viz., Pakpattan, Vehari, Lahore, Nankana Sahib, Faisalabad, Sahiwal, Narowal and Sialkot) of Central Punjab. The area possesses quite rich traditional background which was exploited to get information about ethnobotanical usage of grasses. The ethnobotanical data on the various traditional uses of the grasses was collected using a semi- structured questionnaire. A total of 51 species of grasses belonging to 46 genera were recorded from the area. Almost all grasses were used as fodder, 15% were used for medicinal purposes in the area like for fever, stomach problems, respiratory tract infections, high blood pressure etc., 06% for roof thatching and animal living places, 63% for other purposes like making huts, chicks, brooms, baskets, ladders stabilization of sand dunes. E-mail: [email protected] Issued 04 January 2009 ABSTRACT A semi-structured questionnaire matrix and direct field observation were used to identify botanicals used for veterinary health care in the rural areas of Ekiti State, Nigeria. A total of 38 plants belonging to 27 families were valued for the treatments of poultry pests and diseases in the study area and the parts mostly utilized were the leaves. Features that enhanced the continuous utilization of these botanical species were identified and strategies that could further enhance their sustainability were also proposed. INTRODUCTION Ekiti State (7 025’- 8 020’, 5 000’- 6 000’) is located in the southwestern part of Nigeria. The state has a contiguous land mass of about 7000 sq. kilometers and over 75% of the 1.6million inhabitants of this area are farmers, most of whom are situated in rural areas (Kayode 1999). There are two climatic seasons, a dry season, which lasts from November to February and a rainy season, which lasts from March to October with an annual rainfall of about 1150mm (Kayode and Faluyi 1994). In Nigeria, ethnoveterinary practices still play important roles in many rural areas (Kudi and Myint 1999). -
