Ex DC.) is an underutilized leguminous crop which has been used as a food source across central America and Asia. It is adapted to a range of environments and is closely related to major leguminous food crops, offering the potential to understand the genetic basis of environmental adaptation, and it may be used as a source of novel genes and alleles for the improvement of other legumes. Here, we assembled a draft genome of P. erosus of 460 Mbp in size containing 37,886 gene models. We used this assembly to compare three cultivars each of P. erosus and the closely related P. tuberosus and identified 10,187,899 candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). The SNP distribution reflects the geographic origin and morphology of the individuals. Attitudinal responses from a sample of Caribbean Black school students in Trinidad are compared with responses from West African Black students in English-speaking Gambia and with matched East Indian students from the other co-culture in Trinidad. Findings from open-ended questionnaires show the two Black samples to differ from the East Indian sample in the greater priority given to social concerns. Responses related to their initiative and goals in manipulating the environment show the Carib bean Black sample to exceed both the West African Black sample and the East Indian sample. Responses related to personality expansion show both the Caribbean Black sample and the East Indian sample to be more out going, secure, and realistic than the West African sample. The discussion attributes some of these findings to the continuity of at titudes by culture of origin, and others to change induced by the richer physical and psychological opportunities of the Caribbean. Resumen. Se comparan las respuestas actitudinales de dos muestras de estudiantes negros, en Trinidad y en Gambia, y de una tercer muestra de estudiantes Indio-orientales de Trinidad. Los resultados obtenidos indican que las dos muestras difieren de la muestra Indio-oriental en cuanto a la mayor prioridad otorgada a preocupaciones sociales. Las respuestas relacionadas con su iniciativa y objetivos al manipular el ambiente indican que la muestra de negros del Caribe excede tanto a la muestra de negros de Africa occidental (Gambia), como a la muestra Indio-oriental. -

BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION In line with the FAO/World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) Global Strategy for the Progressive Control of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), this project has been developed to provide support to the regional grouping of West African countries to strengthen emergency preparedness against the eventuality of HPAI being introduced into this currently free area. There is growing evidence that the avian influenza, which has been responsible for serious disease outbreaks in poultry and humans in several Asian countries since 2003, is spread through a number of sources, including poor biosecurity at poultry farms, movement of poultry and poultry products and live market trade, illegal and legal trade in wild birds. Although unproven, it is also suspected that the virus could possibly be carried over long distances along the migratory bird flyways to regions previously unaffected (Table 1) is a cause of serious concern for the region. Avian influenza subtype H5N1 could be transported along these routes to densely populated areas in the South Asian Subcontinent and to the Middle East, Africa and Europe. -

E-mail: [email protected] Issued 04 January 2009 ABSTRACT A semi-structured questionnaire matrix and direct field observation were used to identify botanicals used for veterinary health care in the rural areas of Ekiti State, Nigeria. A total of 38 plants belonging to 27 families were valued for the treatments of poultry pests and diseases in the study area and the parts mostly utilized were the leaves. Features that enhanced the continuous utilization of these botanical species were identified and strategies that could further enhance their sustainability were also proposed. INTRODUCTION Ekiti State (7 025’- 8 020’, 5 000’- 6 000’) is located in the southwestern part of Nigeria. The state has a contiguous land mass of about 7000 sq. kilometers and over 75% of the 1.6million inhabitants of this area are farmers, most of whom are situated in rural areas (Kayode 1999). There are two climatic seasons, a dry season, which lasts from November to February and a rainy season, which lasts from March to October with an annual rainfall of about 1150mm (Kayode and Faluyi 1994). In Nigeria, ethnoveterinary practices still play important roles in many rural areas (Kudi and Myint 1999). -

In the literature the name bambara groundnut is commonly used. The beans are related to cowpeas and botanically known as Vigna subterranea (L) Verdc. There are two botanical varieties namely V. subterranea var. spontanea which includes the wild varieties and V. subterranea var. subterranea which includes the cultivated varieties. Although it produces a nutritious food and is cultivated throughout Africa the bambara remains one of the crops most neglected by science. Yet empirical evidence and fragmentary research results suggest that it is a crop with great potential.
