Biologie vegetală, 2020, 66: 13-29 ISSN: 1223-6578, E-ISSN: 2247-2711 ASPECTS REGARDING FLORA AND THE ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF SOME PLANT SPECIES FROM THE LOCAL MEADOWS OF BĂICENI (BOTOȘANI COUNTY) Florentina ȘCHIOPU1, Anișoara STRATU2*, Irina IRIMIA2 Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to inventory the plant species in the meadows on the territory of Băiceni and highlight their economic importance. The floristic studies were carried out in the vegetation season from 2018 to 2019. Based on the literature, plant species were identified and then processed in terms of bioforms, floristic elements and ecological indices. Also, the economic categories in which the identified species fall were analysed. 66 species belonging to 21 botanical families have been identified. The families Fabaceae, Poaceae and Asteraceae were distinguished by the higher number of species. Most of the species identified in the study area are hemicryptophytes, heliophiles, eurytherms, which grow on dry to moderately moist soils, euritrophs. Over 50% of the identified species belong to several categories of useful plants (fodder, medicinal, melliferous). Introduction In Romania, in 2014, hayfields and pastures occupied 31.9% of the country's agricultural area (Raport anual privind starea mediului în România, anul 2017). In Botoșani County, at the level of 2019, pastures, hayfields and natural meadows represented 23% of the agricultural area of the county, the pastures having a higher share (19%) (Raport privind starea mediului în județul Botoșani în anul 2019). -

ABSTRACT Lathyrus species are well placed to meet the increasing global demand for food and animal feed, at the time of climate change. Conservation and sustainable use of the genetic resources of Lathyrus is of significant importance to allow the regain of interest in Lathyrus species in world. A comprehensive global database of Lathyrus species originating from the Mediterranean Basin, Caucasus, Central and West Asia Regions is developed using accessions in major genebanks and information from eight herbaria in Europe. This Global Lathyrus database was used to conduct gap analysis to guide future collecting missions and in situ conservation efforts for 37 priority species. The results showed the highest concentration of Lathyrus priority species in the countries of the Fertile Crescent, France, Italy and Greece. -
Sahnish (Arikara) Ethnobotany

Kindscher, Sahnish (Arikara) Ethnobotany This book describes the traditional use of wild plants among the Arikara (Sahnish) for food, medicine, craft, and other uses. The Arikara grew corn, hunted and foraged, and traded with other tribes in the northern Great Plains. Their villages were located along the Sahnish (Arikara) Missouri River in northern South Dakota and North Dakota. Today, many of them live at Fort Berthold Reservation, North Dakota, as part of the MHA (Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara) Ethnobotany Nation. We document the use of 106 species from 31 plant families, based primarily on the work of Melvin Gilmore, who recorded Arikara ethnobotany from 1916 to 1935. Gilmore interviewed elders for their stories and accounts of traditional plant use, collected material goods, and wrote a draft manuscript, but was not able to complete it due to debilitating illness. Fortunately, his field notes, manuscripts, and papers were archived and form the core of the present volume. Gilmore’s detailed description is augmented here with historical accounts of the Arikara gleaned from the journals of Great Plains explorers—Lewis and Clark, John Bradbury, Pierre Tabeau, and others. Additional plant uses and nomenclature is based on the field notes of linguist Douglas R. Parks, who carried out detailed documentation of the Sahnish (Arikara) Ethnobotany tribe’s language from 1970–2001. Although based on these historical sources, the present volume features updated modern botanical nomenclature, contemporary spelling and interpretation of Arikara plant names, and color photographs and range maps of each species. -

Recent publications have provided a revision of Hoffmannseggia for North America, a resolved phylogeny, and an analysis of the biogeography of the genus, but there is to date no treatment of all of the taxa. Here we present a key to the genus and its closest relatives, a key to all of the recognized taxa, typification, distributional data for each species, selected specimens examined for the South American taxa, and notes where appropriate. Apios americana Medikus (apios) is a wild tuberous legume with potential as a crop plant. Five apios accessions were grown in sand culture in two greenhouse experiments to examine the effect of N fertilization and inoculation with Bradyrhizobium japonicum on yield and plant characteristics. A common soybean B. japonicum strain (USDA76) was applied to plants watered with 0, 50, 100, 200, or 300 ppm N solutions (NH4NO3), plus a complete nutrient solution. At 0 N, total dry matter yield of nonin- oculated plants was only » 30% of inoculated plants. However, total dry-matter yields of inoculated plants at 0 N were only »77% of plants supplemented with 50 or 100 ppm, indicating that inoculation alone was insufficient to meet the N needs of the plant. Tuber weight was increased by both N and inoculation, but tuber weight decreased at N concentrations >100 ppm. Differences among plant accessions with regard to tuber fresh weight, harvest index, and modulation were found. These studies indicated that N fertilization maybe required to maximize tuber yields of apios. Apios americana (groundnut or apios) is its unique role as an N2-fixing and tuber- a wild legume native to the eastern half of producing plant (Putnam et al., 1990). -
