TASK ORDER NUMBER FMD-C339 Dear Ms. Cruz: This letter report summarizes the findings of the focused plant survey conducted for the Soft-Bottom Channel (SBC) Reach 113, Dominguez Channel, for the Los Angeles County Flood Control District (LACFCD) to support the Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) Waste Discharge Requirements (WDR) for the proposed actions relating to the Dominguez Channel SBC Reach Annual Maintenance Project (Project). Information contained in this document is in accordance with accepted scientific and technical standards that are consistent with the requirements of United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). The Project reach is located in the Cities of Gardena, Carson, Wilmington, and Los Angeles. The channel is surrounded mainly by residential, commercial, and industrial development. The Project is located between the Interstate-110 and Interstate-710, extending south of Artesia Boulevard in Gardena to Henry Ford Avenue in Wilmington in the Port of Los Angeles (Figure 1). The proposed impact area includes: . The expanse from the top of the riprap on one bank, across the channel, to the top of the riprap on the other bank . The name by Candolle is legitimate and it is here lectotypified by a specimen kept at G. In addition, after field surveys and herbarium searches, we suggest that this taxon should be considered as a subspecies of C. deusta Ten., a very polymorphic species of south-eastern Europe, proposing a new combination and providing a detailed description. In addition, we provide the validation of the name C. cineraria subsp. sirenum, endemic to Sirenuse islands (province of Salerno). Finally, a new natural hybrid within C. sect. Centaurea (C. montaltensis × C. deusta subsp. deusta) is described on the basis of the diagnosis and a specimen at PI by Michele Guadagno. -

État Bruxelles 27: 587. 1957 Familia: Asteraceae, tribu Cynareae Sinonimia No tiene Antecedentes Generales Centaurodendron es un género endémico exclusivo a la isla Robinson Crusoe. La posición sistemática del género fue revisada por Carlquist (1958) Compuesta arborescente con tallo simple, no ramificado. Hojas reunidas en forma de ramilletes en las puntas de las ramas, lanceoladas, enteras, con nervio central muy notorio; inflorescencias terminales, corimbos compuestos de 50 a 100 cabezuelas (Skottsberg 1957). Plantas sin látex (Muñoz, 1966). El fruto es un aquenio. Su floración es esporádica (Skottsberg, 1952) Se ha realizado ensayos de propagación en vivero, pudiéndose cultivar, tanto en la Administración del P. N. Juan Fernández como en el Jardín Botánico Nacional de Viña del Mar (Ricci,2003). Distribución geográfica (extensión de la presencia) Solamente se han visto individuos en playa larga, se estima extensión de la presencia en menos de 6 km2, tamaño aproximado del sector, más impenetrable de la Isla Robinson Crusoe (Plan de Manejo, 1976) Tamaño poblacional estimado, abundancia relativa y estructura poblacional Según literatura, solamente se ha visto 2 individuos maduros, separados por 50-60 m (Ricci 1989, 2005), se encuentran en Playa Larga (Puerto Francés). Tendencias poblacionales actuales Especie muy escasa y rara Skottsberg (1957). Con sólo 2 individuos observados (Ricci, 2006). No hay Antecedentes de tendencias poblacionales cuantitativas, pues ha sido muy difícil encontrarla en las distintas expediciones botánicas. Preferencias de hábitat de las especies (área de ocupación) Esta especie crece en la zona de montaña alta (Greimler et al.,2002), y principalmente en la zona de “ensamblaje de Robinsonias” (Skottsberg,1952). -
Germinative Response to Heat Treatments in Relation to Resprouting Ability

In Mediterranean fire-prone ecosystems, plant species persist and regenerate after fire by resprouting, by recruiting new individuals from a seed bank (post-fire seeding), or by both resprouting and post-fire seeding. Since species with resprouting ability are already able to persist in fire-prone ecosystems, we hypothesize that they have been subjected to lower evolutionary pressure to acquire traits allowing or enhancing post-fire recruitment. Consequently, we predict that the germination of non-resprouters is more likely to be increased or at least unaffected by heat than the germination of resprouters. 2. To test this hypothesis we compiled published experiments carried out in Mediterranean Basin species where seeds were exposed to different heat treatments. We compared the probability of heat-tolerant germination (i.e. heated seeds had greater or equal germination than the control), the probability of heat-stimulated germination (i.e. heated seeds had greater germination than the control) and the stimulation magnitude (differences in proportion of germination of the heated seeds in relation to the untreated seeds, for heat-stimulated treatments) between resprouters and non-resprouters. 3. Non-resprouters showed higher probability of heat-tolerance, higher probability of heat- stimulation and higher stimulation magnitude even when phylogenetic relatedness was considered. Differences between life-forms and post-fire seeding ability do not explain this pattern. -

No attempt at phylogenetic reconstruction has been made since recent revisions in circumscription, and previous reconstructions did not include a good representation of species. A new molecular survey is thus needed. Methods Phylogenetic analyses were conducted using sequences of the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) 1 and 2 and the 5.8S gene. Parsimony and Bayesian approaches were used. Key Results A close correlation between geography and the phylogenetic tree based on ITS sequences was found in all the analyses, with three main groups being resolved: (1) comprising the most widely distributed circum- Mediterranean/Eurosiberian sections; (2) the western Mediterranean sections; and (3) the eastern Mediterranean and Irano-Turanian sections. The results show that the sectional classification in current use needs major revision, with many old sections being merged into larger ones.
