A nd I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a 3 blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” 4 S o Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was 5 seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. A nd Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people that they had acquired in Haran, and they set out to go to the 6 land of Canaan. When they came to the land of Canaan, A bram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the 7 Canaanites were in the land. T hen the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had 8 appeared to him. F rom there he moved to the hill country on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. And there he 9 built an altar to the Lord and called upon the name of the Lord. A nd Abram journeyed on, still going toward the Negeb. Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Epistle Philippians 1:12-14, 19-30 12 I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really 13 served to advance the gospel, s o that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. 14 A nd most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. 19 f or I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus 20 Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, a s it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always 21 Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. F or to me to live 22 is Christ, and to die is gain. I f I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor 23 for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. I am hard pressed between the 24 two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. B ut to 25 remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. C onvinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in 26 the faith, s o that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again. 27 O nly let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the 28 gospel, a nd not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to 29 them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. F or it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in 30 him but also suffer for his sake, e ngaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have. Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Stand Holy Gospel Matthew 20:1-16 Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twentieth chapter. People: Glory to You, O Lord. 1 [J esus said:] “The kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who went out 2 early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. A fter agreeing with the 3 laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. A nd going out 4 about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, a nd to them he said, ‘You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.’ 5 S o they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did 6 the same. A nd about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. 7 And he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ T hey said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’ 8 A nd when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.’ 9 A nd when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a 10 denarius. N ow when those hired first came, they thought they would receive 11 more, but each of them also received a denarius. A nd on receiving it they 12 grumbled at the master of the house, s aying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and 13 the scorching heat.’ B ut he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no 14 wrong.
