  • Lens Mount and Flange Focal Distance
This is a page of data on the lens flange distance and image coverage of various stills and movie lens systems. It aims to provide information on the viability of adapting lenses from one system to another. Video/Movie format-lens coverage: [caveat: While you might suppose lenses made for a particular camera or gate/sensor size might be optimised for that system (ie so the circle of cover fits the gate, maximising the effective aperture and sharpness, and minimising light spill and lack of contrast... however it seems to be seldom the case, as lots of other factors contribute to lens design (to the point when sometimes a lens for one system is simply sold as suitable for another (eg large format lenses with M42 mounts for SLR's! and SLR lenses for half frame). Specialist lenses (most movie and specifically professional movie lenses) however do seem to adhere to good design practice, but what is optimal at any point in time has varied with film stocks and aspect ratios! ] 1932: 8mm picture area is 4.8×3.5mm (approx 4.5x3.3mm useable), aspect ratio close to 1.33 and image circle of ø5.94mm. 1965: super8 picture area is 5.79×4.01mm, aspect ratio close to 1.44 and image circle of ø7.043mm. 2011: Ultra Pan8 picture area is 10.52×3.75mm, aspect ratio 2.8 and image circle of ø11.2mm (minimum). 1923: standard 16mm picture area is 10.26×7.49mm, aspect ratio close to 1.37 and image circle of ø12.7mm.

  • Dresden Milestones
DRESDEN MILESTONES 75 Years of Exakta Olaf Nattenberg first published in PhotoDeal No 61, II/2008 This article is to be read in conjunction with the article in PhotoDeal, and the captions to the pictures there are given at the end. Seventy-five years ago, in 1933, Ihagee showed the Exakta 4 x 6.5, later known as the Standard Exakta, at the Leipzig Fair. It was the smallest SLR of its day; and this is reason enough to remember this outstanding camera and its many variations. On 13 May 1912 the Dutch businessman Johan Steenbergen (1886-1967) founded the Industry and Trading Company in Dresden. Steenbergen was born on 7 December 1886 in the small Dutch town of Meppel to a Dutch draper and a German mother. While still at school, he worked in his parents’ business, and at the same time opened his own first business, trading in photographic material and gramophones. With the intention of eventually succeeding to his parents’ business he went to the Tailors’ School in Dresden in 1908. While there he came into contact with Dresden’s already burgeoning photographic trade, and lost interest in textiles. He began work as a trainee Apprentice at H. Ernemann & Co. In May 1912, at the age of 25, and with financial help from his mother, he founded the Industry and Trading Company, which within a year had become the Ihagee Camera Co. In 1919 the firm was re-incorporated as the Ihagee Camera Factory Steenbergen & Co. Ihagee sold cameras of various kinds. Outstanding early ones were the Corona and the Neugold, both appearing in 1920.

Secondary School time he became interested in photography IHAGEE: Its history until 1945 products, chemicals and gramophones, which he sold in his own by Hugo D. Ruys business in Meppel. After his fathers death and given his disinterest in drapery, it was decided to close down the business in Meppel. His The Dutch original of this article was published in 1984 in Photohis- commercial talents came in handy at the spectacular winding-up sale. torisch Tijdschrift, the journal of the Dutch Society of Photographica Before he left for Dresden, he already had designed a trade mark: a Collectors. On essential points the text has been updated, based on setting moon with rising sun; this was to be used by Ihagee for many current knowledge. years. Dresden On recommendation from his uncle and guardian Johan was sent to Dresden, where a tailor academy as well as a flowering precision- mechanical industry existed. The importance of Dresden for photography at the time is supported by the fact that an international photography exhibition was held there in 1908. Steenbergen couldn't be sympathetic to the job of tailor and was almost immediately working as an apprentice for H. Ernemann K.G., one of the dozens of photographic companies active in Dresden. On the 26th of September 1910 the Imperial Patent Register has registered patent no. 262624 about a "construction to disable the infinity stop of the lens carrier" on Steenbergen's name. In 1911 Steenbergen had his name removed from the Register of Population in Meppel. Industry and Trade Patent of Johan Steenberegen, two years before he founded Ihagee.

In producing my book, I was amazed how a full color book with perfect bound cover could be produced today at a reasonable cost. This owes much of its credit to Chester Carlson who developed the copier machine from a basic idea. At first, his idea was rejected by photographic establishment, and no one saw the potential of it until a small company in east cost signed a deal to commercialize his product. It was Harold Company in Rochester, which later became the Xerox corporation. The photo copier is not a camera, and it’s not a printing press. It is something in between, and that’s why no one saw its po- tential at the beginning. Ideas are worth many times more than dia- monds, or gold excavation from mountains.

  • Short History of Ihagee
Short history of Ihagee The Ihagee company was founded in Dresden, Germany in 1912 by Johan Steenbergen, a young man from Meppel, The Netherlands. Originally, the company was named Industrie- und Handelsgesellschaft; later, the abbreviation IHG was written as it is pronounced (in German): eehahgay and incorporated in the official name. Actually, the company has changed its name and structure several times; here with Ihagee I mean all these companies. Ihagee has produced many camera types, some rather common but also some interesting models. In particular the Patent Klappreflex was unusual. It was a single lens bellows reflex that folded (the klapp) in a special way (the patent). It also produced bellows and macro extension rings, microscope adapters, flash equipment and enlargers. Lenses were always supplied by other companies. World fame came with the Exakta. In 1933 it was a compact single lens reflex for roll film; this model is now called the Standard-Exakta (Vest Pocket Exakta in English speaking countries). In 1936 the Kine-Exakta was the world's first single lens reflex that used the now standard cine film and the 24x36 mm picture size. Steenbergen had a Jewish wife and, although she was an American citizen, he considered it wise to leave Germany and go to the USA in 1942. He never saw Dresden and his company again. In February 1945 Dresden, a very beautiful city, was heavily bombed because it was so beautiful. The allies hoped this would demoralise the Germans so much that they would end the war. That didn't happen but the Ihagee factory was destroyed.
