Apart from standard unaccompanied works by Tōru Takemitsu and Kazuo Fukushima, other Japanese flute compositions have yet to establish a permanent place in the standard flute repertoire. The purpose of this document is to broaden awareness of Japanese flute compositions through the discussion, analysis, and evaluation of substantial flute sonatas by three important Japanese composers: Ikuma Dan (1924-2001), Hikaru Hayashi (1931- 2012), and Akira Tamba (b. 1932). A brief history of traditional Japanese flute music, a summary of Western influences in Japan’s musical development, and an overview of major Japanese flute compositions are included to provide historical and musical context for the composers and works in this document. Discussions on each composer’s background, flute works, and compositional style inform the following flute sonata analyses, which reveal the unique musical language and characteristics that qualify each work for inclusion in the standard flute repertoire. These analyses intend to increase awareness and performance of other Japanese flute compositions specifically and lesser- known repertoire generally. -

July 4, 2005 TEAL-3 Draft Ergativity and Bare Nominals in Early Old Japanese Yuko Yanagida (University of Tsukuba) 1. Introduction The purpose of my study is to show that the Japanese language in the Nara period (710-794) has some characteristics of ergative-absolutive languages. I extracted all the data from Manyoshu, the earliest written record of Classical Japanese, completed early in the ninth century. The groundwork of my study is Miyagawa (1989), who proposes that Japanese underwent change of case marking from abstract case assignment to morphological case marking. Old Japanese allows two kinds of objects, objects marked by wo and bare objects. Miyagawa observes that bare objects in Old Japanese must occur immediately adjacent to a verb, and suggests that they are assigned abstract case under government. Miyagawa’s (1989) proposals are given in (1): (1) Miyagawa (1989): (a) Abstract Case Assignment: (i) A bare object occurs immediately adjacent to the verb (ii) A bare object is assigned abstract case under government. (b) Conclusive vs. Attributive form: (i) The conclusive form assigns abstract case. (ii) The attributive form, which is nominal, has no case assigning feature. (c) Accusative Case Assignment: The attributive form requires the morphological case marker wo. From a complete survey of bare subjects in Manyoshu, I found that bare subjects, just like bare objects, occur immediately adjacent to a verb, which suggests that bare subjects are assigned abstract case in the same way as bare objects. Based on the fact that the subjects of intransitive and the objects of transitive verbs are morphologically unmarked, Old Japanese has ergative rather than accusative typology. -

Oral Tradition, 24/1 (2009): 249-268 Performative Loci of the Imperial Edicts in Nara Japan, 749-70 Ross Bender The naiki presented the text to the Minister, the Minister submitted it to the Emperor. This being over, the Minister selected a capable man to read it, who received it and went back to his proper place. The Prince Imperial rose in the Eastern side of his seat and faced the West. Then everybody present from the princes downward rose and did likewise. The senmyō no taifu (herald) went to his appointed place and read the senmyō. Its contents were…. Then he said: Everybody obey this. The Prince Imperial first of all said “Aye.” Then everybody from the princes downward said likewise “Aye.” The Prince Imperial made obeisance. Then everybody present from the princes downward did the same. This was repeated as many times as senmyō were read. The ceremonial was always the same (Jōganshiki, c. 871; trans. Snellen 1934:166). This description of the reading of an Imperial edict (senmyō) from the Jōganshiki, a late ninth-century compendium of court procedures, provides an image of the formal declamation of the Emperor’s words in an orderly, routinized setting. The nobility are seated in their appointed places, the ritual is predetermined, and indeed, as the text notes: “The ceremonial was always the same.” But this illustration is deceptively static and misleading. The contemporary performative context of imperial edicts may in fact be accurately reflected in this late ninth-century handbook of court ritual, but the senmyō texts that we know from the official court histories, the Rikkokushi (Six National Histories, Sakamoto 1991) date back to the end of the seventh century. -

ISBN978-4-87974-722-8 ii Preface This 12th Workshop on Asian Language Resources (ALR12) focuses on language resources in Asia, which has more than 2,200 spoken languages. There are now increasing efforts to build multi-lingual, multi-modal language resources, with varying levels of annotations, through manual, semi-automatic and automatic approaches, as the use of ICT spreads across Asia. Correspondingly, the development of practical applications of these language resources has also been rapidly advancing. The ALR workshop series aims to forge a better coordination and collaboration among researchers on these languages and in the NLP community in general, to develop common frameworks and processes for promoting these activities. ALR12 collaborates with ISO/TC 37/SC 4, which develops international standards for "Language Resources Management," and ELRA, which is campaigning LRE map, in order to integrate efforts to develop an Asian language resource map. Also, the workshop is supported by AFNLP, which has a dedicated Asian Language Resource Committee (ARLC), whose aim is to coordinate the important ALR initiatives with different NLP associations and conferences in Asia and other regions. Exactly when in the century this imperial transformation occurred is a matter of debate with political as well as academic overtones. Discussions about Japan tend to link sovereignty and empire because threats to Japanese national sovereignty lay behind the impulse to build an empire in the first place. The empire grew as Japan forced sovereign states to cede to it territories like Taiwan and Karafuto (southern Sakhalin) and absorbed the previously sovereign Korea and nomi- nally sovereign Ryukyu kingdom (now Okinawa Prefecture). This chapter focuses on an outlier region – Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan’s main islands – and its indigenous Ainu people. Never sovereign and never under the suzerainty of any state other than Japan, Hokkaido does not fit easily into typical modes of discourse about empire in the Japanese context. -

The 1923 Kantō Earthquake, the post-World War II era, and the 3.11 triple disasters will be examined to show not only how Japanese culture has evolved over time in response to these disasters, but also how some aspects of the culture have remained the same. The Kantō earthquake and the post-World War II years will be examined to give a historical context of the culture of disaster in Japan so as to show how they informed the narratives and culture that arose in the aftermath of 3.11. -
