Whilst we do our utmost to reproduce sounds that are accurate and true-to-life, sometimes these sounds may not completely tally with the user’s expectation. Due to the nature of the simulation, it is often not possible to reproduce a completely accurate soundscape for a variety of reasons such as limitations with our current technology and occasional inability to gain meaningful access to the being created. You should therefore regard the audio reproduction for our locomotives as authentic interpretations rather than perfect recreations.

1 Background

DB BR 146.5

The 146 TRAXX (Transnational Railway Applications with eXtreme fleXibility) P160 AC2 is an electric . This variant of the TRAXX series is classified as a 146.5. It has a maximum speed of 160km/h (99 mph), and a power output of 5,600 kW (7,613 bhp). A total of 154 "Traxx P160 AC2" were produced, with series production focusing on the years 2005- 2007 and 2010-2013. In January 2011, 27 locomotives were ordered for DB. As 146.5 designates, the vehicle numbers strictly speaking to the "private" vehicles of the series 146.5. They were to be used from December 2013 with the IC2 double-deck and were delivered in the appropriate color scheme (white with traffic-red longitudinal stripes).

DBpbzfa 668.2 Control Car 'Intercity 2'

The Intercity 2, is an intercity train of the DB, designed with double-deck car. They have been in operation since December 2015. These coaches are used in German Regional- Express and for Intercity services. They are designed to have a much more comfortable interior than in regional train double-decker coaches. In comparison to other IC stock, these new trains have a top speed of 160 km/h and their intended use is on routes where higher speeds are not possible. DB later sought approval for a top speed of 185 km/h.

5 SIFA

SIFA is short for Sicherheitsfahrschaltung or “Safety Driving Switch”. The SIFA vigilance alerter is disabled at startup, but can be activated or deactivated by pressing ‘Shift+Enter (Numpad)’. While activated the SIFA light on the cab dashboard is normally switched off. While the train is moving the driver is required to confirm an alarm every 30 seconds. When the 30 second alarm is triggered the SIFA light on the cab dashboard will illuminate, after an additional 4 seconds an audible alert will sound. After a further 2.5 seconds the emergency brake will be applied. This can be avoided by acknowledging the alarm at any stage by pressing the ‘Enter (Numpad)’ key.

6 PZB

PZB stands for Punktförmige Zugbeeinflussung, loosely translated to English this means “Spotwise Train Control”. Safe distances between trains are managed conventionally through the use of block-based systems. A given line is broken up into a series of blocks, and trains are permitted (via green or yellow) signals to enter a block. While a train is present in a block the signal permitting entry is set to red, preventing any more trains to enter. As railways have developed, more complex control systems and in-cab signalling have been implemented to improve the safety of the railways and to ensure that drivers are fully aware of what is happening around them by requiring them to react in certain ways according to what is happening. PZB is a complex system and requires that you understand the varying speed limits and the requirement to respond promptly to the signalling system.

PZB Track Interface The PZB system incorporates in-cab signalling, this is where the control desk has indicators, alarms and buttons that will react according to the signalling status on the railway. The mechanism by which this works is a series of “balise” magnets placed on the side of the track. An example of one of these magnets is shown in the image on the left.

PZB Cab Controls There are also three controls on the cab desk that you will need to use in order to interact with the PZB system. These three controls are named as follows:

• Override • Release • Acknowledge

7 LZB

Linienzugbeeinflussung (or LZB) is a continuous line based protection and control system used on selected German and Austrian railway lines. The system was mandatory where trains were allowed to exceed speeds of 160 km/h (99 mph) in Germany. The German translates to “continuous train control”, literally: linear train influencing. To switch on the LZB system, first ensure that PZB has been enabled, and then press Shift+6 (or Ctrl+Numpad Plus). The LZB then will activate itself if you enter an LZB- enabled line. For the LZB end procedure, LZB end will be signaled in the cab’s MFD1 with the LZB ‘Ende’ text message and needs to be acknowledged within 10 seconds. Failure to do so will result in application of the emergency brakes, bringing the loco to a complete stop.

As with the PZB emergency braking, you need to release from the LZB emergency braking following a complete stop. To do so, press the PZB Override (“PZB Befehl40”) switch and hold it down for about 4 seconds.
