  • David Grossman
DAVID GROSSMAN Hans Christian Andersen Author Award 2020 Nominated by IBBY Israel A statement on the Grossman contribution to literature for children and young people. David Grossman (born in Jerusalem, 1954) is a major figure in contemporary Hebrew literature. He writes for older and younger readers, in alternating order: Following every adult book, Grossman publishes a book for younger readers, followed by an adult book, etc. In his literary and journalistic writing Grossman does not shy away from complicated and controversial issues. He fights for the human rights of people of all ages, genders, and ethnicities. He is active in social justice causes and in peace initiatives between Arabs and Jews. In 1982 he published his first children’s book, Duel, about a twelve- year-old boy who makes friends with an elderly man in a nursing home. His writing for children and young adults encompasses a wide range of topics. In his picture books, he focuses on aspects of children’s daily life (Uri’s Special Language; A Brand-New Baby Brother) or their rich and wonderful imaginations, which can generate all sorts of fears (Itamar Walks on Walls; Itamar Meets a Rabbit, Itamar the Dream Hunter), worries (Don’t Worry Ruti, Itamar the Dream Hunter), or fantasies, sometimes involving imaginary friends (Hadas’ Friend). In Grossman’s picture books, the child’s world contains an empathic adult, the father, who respects the child, listens to him lovingly, and is able to suggest an unusual solution to the difficulty confronting the child, which the child is in turn quick to accept (the Itamar books; Who Wants a Piggy-Back?, Don’t Worry Ruti, etc.) In his writing for young adults Grossman deals with complicated issues, including ones that were considered taboo in the young adult Hebrew literature of their day.

For Educational Use Only Six T Six Tikkunim for Israel's Sixtieth Year In celebration and commemoration of Israel’s sixtieth anniversary, we propose six Tikkunim . The idea of Tikkun positions people in partnership with God, assuming responsibility for our world. By the same token, we invite Jews in Israel and abroad to share the responsibility for the present and future State of Israel, through meaningful learning and experience of current dilemmas of the sixty- year-old/young country. Halachah offers an educational frame for the number “sixty”, when it claims that food will be considered kosher even if it has a non-kosher ingredient, when the kosher ingredients of the food are sixty times greate r than the non kosher Thinking within this . ָטֵ ל ְִִ י ingredient. We hope that these Tikkunim will serve as an invitation for contemplation and action on that which requires mending and in turn become sixty times greater than other Israeli challenges. In the following document you will find six gates for six Tikkunim . Each gate is thematically inspired by one of the books of the Mishnah: Tikkun of Time תיקו הזמ – Zeraim (1 Tikkun of Shabbat תיקו שבת – Mo’ed (2 Tikkun of Gender תיקו המגדר – Nashim (3 Tikkun of Conservation תיקו השימור - Nezikin (4 Tikkun of the Sacred Place and Space תיקו המקו הקדוש - Kodashim (5 Tikkun of Social Ethics תיקו הכשרות החברתית – Toharot (6 1 " "ָ ל אִ רִ י ֶַ רָה [ ְטֵלִ י ] ְִִ י " ( תלמוד בבלי , קודשי , חולי , פרק ז ', ד+ צ" ח א ' גמרא) 1 Each Tikkun gate includes: a verse introducing the key issue, an essential question, a Jewish Text, an Israeli song and a contemporary Israeli thought.

I appreciate the trust he had in me taking on of such a risky topic. I will always reflect fondly on our lively chats about “believers.” He is a true intellectual, and I appreciate having been able to encounter his vast knowledge through this process. It is with immense gratitude that I also acknowledge Dr. Abigail Lewis, who provided constructive criticism on my work that heavily influenced the final product. She is the consummate academic, whose insistence on open, civil debate encourages me to continually challenge my own convictions and knowledge. More generally, I owe her my deepest gratitude for the immeasurable guidance and support she provides for my life. I would also like to acknowledge my Grandma and Zeidy, z”l. My grandmother has a unique thirst for learning—listening to her journey of education through the decades instilled in me a passion for acquiring knowledge and making the most of my education.

Hutt Winter 1994 1 403 8983 00 1 I. Introduction While food and drug law has made its greatest contributions to the health and welfare of society over the past two centuries, it is indisputable that the history of this body of law is much older than two hundred years.1 Soon after man realized he needed to eat, he recognized a need to establish rules and regulations governing the sale, preparation and handling of food. Perhaps the oldest documented set of food laws are the Jewish dietary laws, also known by the Hebrew term, kashrut, from which the word kosher is derived. Unlike most laws related to food, which are enacted by society through government or other rulemaking bodies, Jewish dietary laws are believed to be conceptualizations of divine will that were expressed to Moses at Mount Sinai and transcribed in the Old Testament.2 Intellectual curiosity and an interest in the evolution of food and drug law compel both Jews and Gentiles to study the Jewish dietary laws.
