COMMENT BOOKS & ARTS literature and science. Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1864) is about scien- REX tific method and its misuses. Scientists Professor Lidenbrock and Axel enter Earth through an Icelandic crater and, after improbable adventures involving mastodons and underground oceans, are ejected through the Italian volcano Strom- boli. Lidenbrock ignores data that disturb his schema. Axel is a romantic who fails to examine observable facts. Yet the book probes scientific wonder: when Axel is lost and terrified in subterranean darkness, the reader experiences awe contemplating the complete absence of light. The French-language genre advanced significantly with the uncompromis- ing scientific approach of J.-H. Rosny Aîné — the pseudonym of the Belgian Joseph Henri Honoré Boex. In the 1910 Death of the Earth, Rosny’s vision of global environmental crisis is prescient. An imbalance created partly by humans turns Earth to desert. All Rights Reserved. ©2021 SAGE Publishing, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Can it adapt to changing times? Executive Summary The global fashion business is going through a period of intense change and competition, with disruption coming in many colors: global online marketplaces, slower growth, more startups and consumers who now seem bored by what once excited them. Many U.S. shoppers have grown tired of buying Prada and Chanel suits and prefer to spend their money on experiences rather than clothes. Questions about fashion companies’ labor and environmental practices are leading to new policies, although some critics remain unconvinced. Fashion still relies on creativity, innovation and consumer attention, some of which comes from technology and some from celebrities. Here are some key takeaways: High-fashion brands must now compete with “fast fashion,” apparel sold on eBay and vintage sites. Risk factors for fashion companies include China’s growth slowdown, reduced global trade, Brexit, terrorist attacks and erratic commodity prices. Plus-size women are a growing segment of the market, yet critics say designers are ignoring them. Overview José Neves launched Farfetch during the global economic crisis of 2008, drawing more on his background in IT and software than a love of fashion. His idea: Allow small designers and fashion shops to sell their wares worldwide on a single online marketplace. The site will “fetch” fashion from far-off places.

  • An Interview with Andrew Davies
EnterText 1.2 PETER SMITH “The Script is Looking Good”: an interview with Andrew Davies PS Before coming to talk to you, I asked my colleagues what they would most like to ask you, and more than one wanted to know how tight a brief a writer tends to be given when adapting for TV or cinema. AD Right – well, usually when I start something, it’s – first of all, it’s either going to be a one-off or it’s going to be an episode. If it’s for television and it’s going to be in episodes, usually I’m given, or we work out by mutual agreement, the number of episodes that would be best to do this kind of thing in – and when I say “we”, usually I’m working with the producer or it’s someone higher up like an executive producer. Smith: Interview with Andrew Davies 157 EnterText 1.2 For instance, I do a lot of work with the woman who’s Head of Drama at the BBC. This is one of the good things about having been around for a long time; I knew her when she was a script editor. She was a very good script editor, and I suppose what I’m working round to is there’s not usually a lot of disagreement about it. If she says “I think it would make three” or “I think it would make four” or whatever it is, I usually think she’s right. Occasionally, you find that there’s a difference, but generally people will go with what I say these days.

A Business Perspective Number of Pages 45 Date 22.03.2018 Degree Bachelor of Business Administration Degree Programme International Business and Logistics Instructor(s) Michael Keaney, Senior Lecturer Rock music has great importance in the recent history of human kind, and it is interesting to understand the reasons of its de- cline, if it actually exists. Its legacy will never disappear, and it will always be a great influence for new artists but is important to find out the reasons why it has become what it is in now, and what is the expected future for the genre. This project is going to be focused on the analysis of some im- portant business aspects related with rock music and its de- cline, if exists. The collapse of Gibson guitars will be analyzed, because if rock music is in decline, then the collapse of Gibson is a good evidence of this. Also, the performance of independ- ent and major record labels through history will be analyzed to understand better the health state of the genre. The same with music festivals that today seem to be increasing their popularity at the expense of smaller types of live-music events.
