1 Respiratory Motion Tracking in Magnetic Resonance Imaging With
Respiratory Motion Tracking in Magnetic Resonance Imaging with Pilot Tone Technology Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Science in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Mary Lenk Graduate Program in Electrical and Computer Engineering The Ohio State University 2018 Thesis Committee Dr. Lee Potter, Advisor Dr. Rizwan Ahmad 1 Copyrighted by Mary Lenk 2018 2 Abstract This thesis explores the hypothesis that Pilot Tone (PT) technology can encode respiratory induced motion of the heart to improve cardiac magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Pilot tone technology is advantageous due to its high sampling rate to provide high temporal resolution in tracking and predicting respiration. Also, the PT signal has the potential to provide motion information without interrupting the pulse sequence to perform motion compensated scans. A prediction model is hypothesized to account for in-plane and through-plane motions due to respiration. A proof-of-concept experiment was designed to explore the ability of the PT signal to encode respiratory-induced motion. The PT signal was processed retrospectively offline and compared to a reference for respiratory motion. The two signals had a high correlation and show preliminary success for the PT to detect respiration. A linear filter was then designed to predict motion from a training phase using the same reference signal. The linear filter was successful with peak/trough locations between the prediction and the reference signal having a correlation coefficient of 0.9999 for end-expiration and end-inspiration prediction. Furthermore, a PT transmitter was designed and constructed for implementation of additional experiments. -
THE LAST RAFT As It Appeared to a Contemporary
THE LAST RAFT As It Appeared to a Contemporary By LEWIS EDWIN THEISS W ITH the highly commendable purpose of giving the present generation a glimpse of a phase of the life of the past, Mr. R. Dudley Tonkin, a lumber operator of Tyrone, Pa., with his brother, C. Ord Tonkin, in the spring of 1938 constructed the Last Raft. The craft was put together at Burnside, above -iMc- Gee's Mills, far up the West Branch of the Susquehanna, and was to be floated to Harrisburg, approximately 200 miles dis- tant. There, through the cooperation of J. D. Bogar, Jr., a Har- risburg lumiber dealer, the logs would be purchased at the end of the journey. Thousands of persons would have an opportunity to see this log raft-the first to go down the river since 1912, when commercial log rafting came to an end. It was said, too, that Mr. Tonkin's effort was also to celebrate the centennial of his grandfather's first voyage down the river on a log raft. However that may be, this was truly an effort to resurrect the past; for not only would the raft be constructed exactly as log rafts had been fashioned for generations, but the men who would operate it were old time raftmen. Necessarily they were men of advanced years. Seldom has any effort along historical lines stirred up such tremendous interest. Here was to be no static picture of the past, carefully posed behind glass display windows, but an actual exhibition of the real thing-a bit of the past come to life. -

Science Fiction and Astronomy
Sci Fi Science Fiction and Astronomy Many science fiction books include subjects of astronomical interest. Here is a list of some that have been recommended to me or I’ve read. I expect that most are not in the University library but many are available in Kindle and other e-formats. At the top of my list is a URL to a much longer list by Andrew Fraknoi of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. Each title in his list has a very brief summary indicating the kind of story it is. Andrew Fraknoi’s list (http://www.astrosociety.org/education/resources/scifi.html). Gregory Benford is a plasma physicist who has been rated by some as one of the finest observes and interpreters of science in modern fiction. Note: Timescape [Vista, ISBN 0575600500] In the Ocean of Night [Vista, ISBN 0575600357] Across the Sea of Suns [Vista, ISBN 0575600551] Great Sky River [Gallancy, ISBN 0575058315] Eater and over 2 dozen more available as e-books. Stephen Baxter Titan [Voyager, 1997, ISBN 0002254247] has been strongly recommended by New Scientist as a tense, near future, thriller you shouldn’t miss. David Brin has a PhD in astrophysics with which he brings real understanding of the Universe to his stories. The Crystal Spheres won an award. Fred Hoyle is probably the most famous astronomer to have written science fiction. The Back Cloud [Macmillan, ISBN 0333556011] is his classic, followed by A for Andromeda. Try also October the First is too late. Larry Niven’s stories include plenty of ideas inspired by modern astronomy. -
The Apocalyptic Book List
The Apocalyptic Book List Presented by: The Post Apocalyptic Forge Compiled by: Paul Williams ([email protected]) As with other lists compiled by me, this list contains material that is not strictly apocalyptic or post apocalyptic, but that may contain elements that have that fresh roasted apocalyptic feel. Because I have not read every single title here and have relied on other peoples input, you may on occasion find a title that is not appropriate for the intended genre....please do let me know and I will remove it, just as if you find a title that needs to be added...that is appreciated as well. At the end of the main book list you will find lists for select series of books. Title Author 8.4 Peter Hernon 905 Tom Pane 2011, The Evacuation of Planet Earth G. Hovering there I've chased the shouting wind along and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air. "Up, up the long delirious burning blue I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace, where never lark, or even eagle, flew; and, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod the high untrespassed sanctity of space, put out my hand and touched the face of God." Synthesis and Characterizations of Novel Magnetic and Plasmonic Nanoparticles
SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATIONS OF NOVEL MAGNETIC AND PLASMONIC NANOPARTICLES by NAWEEN DAHAL B.S., TRIBHUVAN UNIVERSITY, 1995 M.S., TRIBHUVAN UNIVERSITY, 1997 AN ABSTRACT OF A DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2010 Abstract This dissertation reports the colloidal synthesis of iron silicide, hafnium oxide core-gold shell and water soluble iron-gold alloy for the first time. As the first part of the experimentation, plasmonic and superparamagnetic nanoparticles of gold and iron are synthesized in the form of core-shell and alloy. The purpose of making these nanoparticles is that the core-shell and alloy nanoparticles exhibit enhanced properties and new functionality due to close proximity of two functionally different components. The synthesis of core-shell and alloy nanoparticles is of special interest for possible application towards magnetic hyperthermia, catalysis and drug delivery. The iron-gold core-shell nanoparticles prepared in the reverse micelles reflux in high boiling point solvent (diphenyl ether) in presence of oleic acid and oleyl amine results in the formation of monodisperse core-shell nanoparticles. The second part of the experimentation includes the preparation of water soluble iron- gold alloy nanoparticles. The alloy nanoparticles are prepared for the first time at relatively low temperature (110 oC). The use of hydrophilic ligand 3-mercapto-1-propane sulphonic acid ensures the aqueous solubility of the alloy nanoparticles. Next, hafnium oxide core-gold shell nanoparticles are prepared for the first time using high temperature reduction method. These nanoparticles are potentially important as a high κ material in semiconductor industry. -
