The Blougat: steve tindall

Question: How many Simonsberg boys does it take to screw in a light bulb? Answer: One. He holds the light bulb and the world revolves around him… Harsh, I know, but for some reason it is in this reality that we, as Simonsbergers, form a bond that cannot, literally and fi guratively, be matched. But before we could be Simonsbergers, before we could feel the ‘nugget’, before we could see the dorp, before touchies op die voorgras, before the khaki, there was Blou. ‘Blougat’, the manner in which Simonsberg eerstejaars are affectionately known, is a term that immediately brings back memories of being woken up in the early hours of morning to the tune of “Dans Blougat dans”, cutting down ‘Christmas’ trees for our ‘amazing’ vlot, creating patterns in the sweat on the back of your maatjie, giving the girls of Sonop a new outlook on breakfast, sun burn, stokperd, Farmer’s attempted Afrikaans, Mexican-themed swimming pools, doing a kak job of stealing a cow, rooi broek, a cokie and a pie from De Vos, CP sneaking up on you, swimming on the Spele Saal fl oor (thanks Sterne), ‘Afternoon Delight’, sleeping through Huis Lied, borselkop, kospakkies, “Guys guys guys”, Napoleon Dynamite’s bergskoen, Mnr Nhldebonjangani…., being roped into doing all the kak jobs, craving a cold beer and MET. “Die berg is nog ver Blou”, but eventually it did come, and come, and come, just ask Sterrie… GT was generous enough to supply us with a small meal on our victory over the mountain, a fact that contributed greatly to our exit from the Eerstejaars rugby tournament and signaled the beginning of the end for our studies at the great University of Stellenbosch. We learnt a lot of things in that initial period of euphoria: 1. DO NOT scream obscenities at shady looking cars, 2. ’n Enkel is iets wat jy breek in rugby, 3. How to use the P word, 4. The basins make for an excellent funnel (thanks Sterne), 5. ‘Big Red’ is not the name of Schalkie’s tea cup, 6. Fines meetings = havoc, 7. The club is a great place for a ‘quiet’ beer, and 8. Always remember to suit in an unmistakably upward direction. 2006 saw the inaugural ‘Blou-Bal’, a night that proved the age old adage that there are no ugly chicks at a guys dance. The wine had no chance, hence not being able to accurately recall the event. So where do we go from here? “Blougat, Maandag kom die duiwel…” perspective

The HK: andri stander

Question: Why do you decide to stand for HK for a second year in a row? Answer: To see the look on 120 blougat faces when you tell them they’re climbing “Die Berg tomorrow morning at 05:30”. I know being ‘Die duiwel’ that arrives on the monday is fun, but being with blougat for the whole of the fi rst two weeks is something else. The adrenaline rush you experience while waiting outside before your fi rst spele saal session as a HK is too incredible to put into words, I think the HK’s experience more angst than the blougatte do. You picture yourself eyeballing and harassing the fi rst red-and-white clothed fi gure you stumble unto after slamming the door behind you as hard as you can...untill you walk straight into Corné Eigelaar and Edrich de Wet, the two biggest men this side of Merriman road. But you swallow that lump and tune them anyway, because you know they’re more scared of you than what you are of them. Trying to install the idea of “nugget” and “inisiatief” amongst the bloues pays of its reward when you hear all the stories going around the res of what Blougat got up to the previous night. The life-size Fleur de Lis on Irene’s voorstoep and the blougat-prints on Sonop’s eetsaal windows will make awesome fi reside stories one day. An even better story is going to be the “Case of the failed cow robbery”. I couldn’t stop laughing when I heard that two blougatte were arrested after being caught in Die Laan, by USBD, with a full grown jersey cow following the not so discreet livestock thieves. Trying to keep hundreds of people away from Blougat during Met is an arduous task, especially now, after three weeks, that Blougat has become a part of you and you start to crave the climbing of the mountain as much as the Blougatte do. When standing on top of the highest free standing mountain in the world for the last time you can’t help but shed a tear and wish that you were up here as a Blougat again, having your whole Simon life ahead of you, which will contain the best of times and the hardest of times (telling your dad you failed Fin Rek). Standing on top of the mountain with a brother is even better, especially if you know your dad has been up here too, and you can only hope that the younger one will perfect the art of Simon life and not get ‘asked to leave’ like the old man was, or ‘asked to stay’ on account of the academics as I was. Simonsberg’s fi rst three weeks are the best of the year, and the fi rst year is the best of your life. Watching from the eyes of a HK is just as rewarding. Seeing one of your bloues playing fi rst team rugby or jamming it up in the club is better than any spele saal session. SIMON HAAL

Forgotten Memoirs and Matt Sterne & MacDev With the help of Millers, 180 cases of beer was sold and probably drunk on the day of the met. I blame them, and only them, for my memory being lost to that day, I also lost my army helmet, if anyone happened to fi nd it. But allow us to start at the beginning. One very hectic week before the met itself the met golf day was held at the Strand golf course. It was a sunny day with little wind which aided many of the novice golf- ers as they tried their utmost to put in respectable performances. As the ultimate goal of sinking the ball slowly warped into not losing the ball, the Klipdrift watering hole at the end of the fourth was not so much welcome, but seen as more of an oasis of sorts to some who by that stage had already come to terms with how the rest of the day was heading. The watering holes strategically placed every three or four holes added an extra aspect to the game and not all of the golfers actu- ally managed the seemingly impossible task of completing all the holes. Brandy induced Happy Gilmore drives were the main attraction at the latter holes. All in all it was a successful day, where we walked away with blisters, rashes, strained back muscles, sun burn and an oath to never play that stupid game again. I look forward to next year though, where I have made a promise to myself to actually fi nish at least one hole. On the Wednesday of the Met week, the Met Fashion Show was held at Cancune. With the twelve fi nalists sauntering around in clothes which were made purely for sauntering around in, and blougatte acting as our personal waiters it was always going to go well. Ettiene van Wyk and Harry Steyn had the privilege of acting as MC’s for the evening as they got the crowd going with polite banter and prizes. One of which was a bottle of Nordic Ice which was thrillingly downed on reception by a thirsty member of the crowd. Some extra entertainment was offered in the form of a few second years who had the opportunity to perform a couple of acoustic songs to the delight of their sup- porters. The fashion show itself was a relaxed affair as the girls showed off what the crowd had come to see, and the scene was set for a grand fi nale, as the Met day loomed ever closer. The Met day was, on all accounts, a rather energetic affair. The stands were well fi lled, the course distinctly barn-esque, and the Blougatte less than diplomatic in their guard. While there were a good few scuffl es – euphemisms are fun – as well there must be, and while by and by the atmosphere of harmony and sobriety was competently dispelled, folks had a jolly old time. True artistry and innovation was exhibited by the various fl oors, in the form of their stalls, and the creative genius came together quite nicely - a costume ball on a battlefi eld. Though the actual stands were only completed, for the most part, on the Met day itself, plans and designs are said to have been in development since the late 1980s. Though consistent efforts were made to inform all, for some rea- son both SB and SBA I refused to apply a theme to their stall, instead going as is – a state of affairs that many mistook to be an ingenious representation of the Hartenbos atmosphere. SBA II succeeded in the ‘you don’t want to let your daugh- ter near me…or your son, for that matter’ look, displaying an all too convincing “Prison Break” theme, complete with electric (read ‘funneling’) chair and fencing. SBA III provided a nuanced and well-structured critical commentary on the vio- lence inherent within human nature, cleverly disguised with plastic guns and gue- rilla-looking war paint, and exhibited absolutely no irony at all in their display of the American fl ag. SB III, gripped by the delusion that they were on a remote desert island, constructed a ship in which to escape. However, infi ghting and mutiny pro- duced a series of squabbles, and upon fi nding some rum they decided that only the Simonsberg Stallion ridiculous folk would try and escape without at least an outboard motor of some sort, and so they resigned themselves to saying ‘arrr’ and mimicking the Pirates of the Caribbean. There was a brief moment when people began to panic for the sudden appearance of the Republican Party, but fears were allayed when SB II revealed their ‘caveman’ theme. The blougatte emerged from their proverbial bootcamp in fi ne form, sporting the latest in horse protection technology. Some dispute arose here and there, as the crowd attempted time and time again to alert said blougatte to the troublesome appearance of a wasp on the inside of the track – unfortunately, they refused to listen, and took the enthused pointing as a threatening gesture…thankfully, the wasp did not strike. Some attribute the ever-present concentration of blougatte around SBA II’s posi- tion to quarrelsome behaviour on the latter’s part. This is, in fact, a misconception. As it so happened, many of the fi rst years were allied in kin with many of those in SBA II and III, and in their custom affection is shown by throwing punches and breaking bones – many are single. The Met girls, all there for their boundless personality and academic prowess, en- gaged in fi ne silent debates on issues such as skirt height and sultry stares, and both scholars in the audience were duly impressed. The winner was rewarded with her freedom. Rumour has it there were horse races as well, but accounts vary.

Stevo – jy is ’n legend! Laastens moet die HK-lid gelukkig wees – DIT WAS EEN VAN MY HOOGETUPUNTE OP STELLENBOSCH. Hulle was pragtig! Ek was al by ’n hele paar huisdanse in my twee en ’n half jaar op die Bos, maar die girls was besonders mooi dié jaar. Die mooiste nog. Well done ouens! Weereens well done ouens!

SIMON RUGBY 2006: I think that about 200 Simonsbergers were at the point of taking their fi rst drag of the victory cigar two minutes before the end of the Simon rugby season. The fat lady, who was warming up her voice, was forced to sit and wait a little bit longer for her fi nal encore. But then just as we thought we were gonna make our fi rst Sauer fi nal in a very long time (I purposefully didn’t put a numerical value as it was very long ago!), the thirds were on the brink of taking their fi nal, and the seconds were two minutes from glory…everything came down as if the fi nal curtain was weighed down with two and a half tons of bricks and the whole Simon season crashed in a matter of three gruelling games in four days. Simonsberg rugby experienced one of the biggest revivals in recent rugby memory, equal to that of the Nick Mallet era, or the fi rst year of Jake White’s regime. To mention the least, we were dismall over the last couple of years: the fi rsts always threw away matches in the second half, the seconds…well…didn’t really exist. The thirds and fourths did well, considering they played with all the second team players. In 2006 we saw a change that made everyone proud to be a Simonsberg rugby supporter again. a couple of great wins, including an 11-0 washing of Derby foes, Willows, set the pace for a good season. The fi rst team contested one of the toughest Sauer league seasons in a long time, with the new rules not making it much easier on the guys, and still managed to claim a semi fi nal spot on the last day of league clashes, by beating Majuba 9-3 and steering into one of two open spots that were contested for by fi ve teams. It was the type of situation that one of the South African sides always faces in the Super 14: We had to win, while this team had to lose to that one without conceding a bonus point and the other had to gain a bonus point without winning thereby aiding the other team that had to draw and score three tries in the process. Make sense? Doesn’t matter, we made it to the semis! Everyone was pumped. It was the big Monday, Sauer semi fi nals day, and we were ready to step into the spotlight again. Facing a very strong Huis Marais team was going to be the toughest ask, but we knew we could take them. At half time we thought the contrary. With Huis Muis’ brand of counter attacking style rugby they weaved through and past us for two very good tries, but with great fi ghting guts and hard rugby we managed to claw our way into their half on numerous occasions. With things very close and looking as if it could still go either way, the 12 year old referee decided to take a ten minute water break with the clock still running. This time delay was crucial in the outcome of the game and with a last couple of penalties in the dying minutes and a 9-15 score line, we still had a great shot, but that small injury time prevailed, and we had to be happy with the semi fi nal spot we fought so hard for. The third team showed exactly how the new laws should be played. A brand of running rugby was the order of the day for Oupa Joe, Jantjes and Pyp’s large squad of champagne players. Facing a mixed league of fi rst, third, fourth and fi fth teams wasn’t going to be easy, but a very CHUCK YOUR CIGAR good win in the last league day over Dagbreek ensured a semi fi nal spot for the lads. A tough encounter against Metanoia’s fi rst team ensued and a very early penalty was eventually the decider in this 3-0 win. The thirds now had to face league leaders, Eendrag, in the fi nal. A very tough and lob sided battle persisted from the kick-off with Eendrag managing to take the lead and then stretching with a number of good attacking moves. A 17-3 lead, with ten minutes to go, never looked as if it would last and, with fi ve minutes to go, this was proven right with a well worked Simon try. 17-10 was the scoreline and the boys in red were pushing at the Eendrag half with great fury and determination, but with the seconds ticking out, miss Godiva was once again going to sing her loud chorus to the exit of the second Simon team from their respective competition. The thirds were eventually crowned as champions due to Eendrag fi elding a number of unregistered players, one of them being the current South African Universities fast bowler. (Wrong sport, we know, but in this league any South African colours count!). The second team, aka the Simon Barbarians, played a very entertaining brand of rugby during the season and set the third league alight with some blistering speed in the backs and great ball skills in the forwards. By claiming the fi rst and second semester trophy, things looked set for a good season fi nish. A well coached and determined Helderberg team couldn’t stop the fi nesse of the Simon boys during the semi fi nal and a fi nal show down with league rivals, Dagbreek, was on the cards. With two previous losses against the Broederbond boys and the pressure of being the only Simon team left to still have a shot at winning their fi nal, this was going to be super tough. The fi nal saw probably the best game of the season, with some scintillating skills and two good tries setting the pace for a 12-10 scoreline with literally three minutes to go. Unfortunately a lack of discipline during the game and a series of high tackles forced the referee (the same 12 year old who sunk the fi rsts, aided by his 10 year old refereeing partner) to reach for a yellow card, and thus ultimately a penalty on the 22 in front of the sticks. (There is yet an encyclopedia to explain the reason for this law in the koshuis system). Two minutes from glory turned into a night of disaster as the 13-12 fi nal score was enough to sink a whole season’s happiness…until the team sunk their fi rst couple of post match beers in the club! To all the rugby players from the 2006 year: You guys gave Simonsberg a proud face again, not only on the rugby fi eld, but everywhere on campus. Thank you to coach Danie de Villiers for your great vision in aiding us through the season and teaching the guys what good rugby is about. Thank you to all the inwoners for the great support and the friday afternoons in the club that got you oiled up for the ref slinging sessions during the season. Well done to all the guys for playing some great rugby and even though we didn’t get to smoke our cigars, we came a very long way. Diverse Sport

It was moving to see the emotion on Ouma’s face during Firstly, a really special mention must be made of “Ouma”, the singing of Old Boys of Simon and even though the Katleen Lawrence, who left Simonsberg earlier this year gender of the song isn’t completely accurate, it still felt after 30 years of service! I’D ALSO just like to use this chance to congratulate Mr Jadezweni on his fi rst year at Simonsberg. Sir, you really have made such an immense impact in your fi rst year in Die Withuis. Your humility and eagerness to get involved really sets you apart in Simonsberg. As Rob said at his Hane Dinee speech, “Your willingness to just sit back and learn from us, instead of enforcing your own beliefs, really makes you a big man”. You are always willing to come and have lunch with the guys in the eetsaal and to just make casual chat with a new group of Simon manne every day. The guys notice your passion and involvement and this will make you a great man in Simonsberg. What will really count in your favour is your vision for the future and your knowledge of where this country has come from, as you will be able to blend the different cultures of our res into a well oiled machine, ready to take on anything in the true sense of our leadership style. As you mentioned, this year should be used as a mark in the history of Simonsberg. This couldn’t be more true as we step into a new age under your guidance and I am sure that when we return in a couple of years, you will still be here as the Inwonende Hoof of the best residence on the Stellenbosch campus. Well done on a great fi rst year MJ and we hope it will just improve as you grow wiser in our traditions so that you may also spend many a decade with us. ...and some last shots a last thought... If one had to bottle what Simonsberg is, put a lable on it, and try to market it, you would lose all your money and go abso- lutely bankrupt. What happens in this place can only be understood by the people who stay here. There is a distinct bond that the gen- tlemen form Die Withuis experience that no other residence has. Blougattyd, The Met, Simonstock... How do you justify and explain these things to an outsider? How do you explain to one of the stuckup dinosaurs on the university board that it is the most fun in the world to be “insulted” as a Blougat? How climbing a mountain is the best feeling in the world? Res life makes this university what it is and that is some- thing that the head honchos at our great institution don’t un- derstand, that if they changed how things work, they simply won’t work anymore and they would simply not be at the lead of a great institution anymore. We make this place great, the traditions, the pride and the unity of a resident, especially that of a Simonsberger. When we were a couple of years old we started the oldest res tradition on campus in the Met, even ahead of a res that it is twice as old as us. This just shows where we come from. I spent nigh on 70 hours putting this year’s Simonsberger to- gether, and it’s amazing what you can learn from just looking at photos and reading some articles. Guys, we live in a great place...the best place. Some of us stay for just a year while some of us stay for fi ve and six years...respect. This place becomes a part of us and we be- come this place. Remember what CP said in his Prim speech at HK-circus: “Simonsberg is nie die gebou of die gras of selfs die berg nie, dis ons ouens, elkeen van ons wat hier is.” The day we leave this place isn’t the day we cease to be a Simonsberger, it is simply the day that we go out into the world as a Simonsberger. The day we leave the halls of our former home and go talk to everyone else about where we came from. I had a tear in my eye when I sang Die Huislied for the last time at Hanedinee and I know many of the others who are leaving had that same tear. To all those guys, I bid you a fare- well and hope to see you soon. To the guys that are staying, cherish what you have, it passes in a fl eeting moment. This was the best time of my life, and my aim with this year’s Simonsberger was to try and capture as much as possible of the moments we shared together in Simonsberg. There are lots of photos, jokes and in-depth stories from 2006. When some of us return for the next big reunion, we will look back at these pages and laugh together again. So if you’re ever in a pub in London, or on a cruise ship in the Carribean and you hear the familiar tune of “Simon boy in a ring”, or you see someone with a Simon tie in an offi ce in Du- bai, know that you have found some old and distant friends again, whether they be twenty years older or younger, al of us are brothers. Guys, form my side, I hope you enjoyed the Simonsberger of 2006. Until we meet at the Met next year. Keep well and God Bless. Standi Simonsberg photos of the year
